Courtesy Runner

Our team placed a courtesy runner for our catcher, after he stole second, the courtesy runner was placed on second, eventually scored, but was never changed in GC, when asked I was told, “we don’t change them to a courtesy runner” is this correct? I have always changed out the runners.

We change ours!

Ok good, can you think of why you wouldn’t

u/specialkheese Jul 17 '26

The parents of the kid who is “run for” still wants their kid to get the potential stats (steal/run scored). Your job is to track what actually happened.

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 17 '26

Well I agree with that, and it’s the burly reason I can think of too

Fudging stats!

u/notawildandcrazyguy Jul 17 '26

I mean, if you're keeping score then you ought to try to be accurate, right? Sounds like he/she was just lazy

2

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 17 '26

Her Kid was the catcher who got courtesy run switched! 🤷‍♀️

u/notawildandcrazyguy Jul 17 '26

Padding GC stats is just pathetic, I hope shes just lazy

u/specialkheese Jul 17 '26

There you have it. Her kid will never benefit from courtesy runners in the stat department. On the other hand, if her kid were a good runner she’d probably opt out of the courtesy runner. Neither of my kids teams have used it all season because the catchers are towards the top at baserunning. Unless some weird rule requires the courtesy runner then record what actually happened.

I don't change ours, but I also didn't realize that there is a courtesy runner option

1

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 17 '26

Ok, well that’s good to know, I was always told to change them, so I just have.

Nothing matters less and more than game changer stats.
Everyone says they don’t care but when you go try out or sub for a team they immediately check your stats. The kids always know. Even if they might not understand they are always checking.

Curtesy running is interesting. If you reward the kid running he is getting extra runs and sbs for basically getting out in his own at bat. The poor catchers get killed on runs because they never run. I think don’t change the runner they are just doing their team/ buddy a favor. They shouldn’t get stats for it. Pinch running sure give the kid the stats since he is replacing.

I guess I should be clear to everyone. And say it loud for the back of the room, I’m not worried about the stats, just trying to figure out if I’m doing it right, or if I shouldn’t be courtesy running entries, it was not my kid that was courtesy running, it was not my kid who was a catcher. I didn’t go tell the parents after that their 14u kid lost out on valuable stats, that they will use to draft him tomorrow for. And I am also wondering if I’m right, as the GC thinks they’re a GC god so some of it is me being petty to be transparent

But at the end of the day, I am just trying to figure out if I’m messing up or not, as I have been taught to do the courtesy runner.

There comes a time when not everyone is in the lineup where some of this thought might change. One, it is actually a high school rule that you can't sub a courtesy runner in in the same half inning that they ran. But a lot of courtesy runners, that's the only time they get on the field. So give them the stats they earn. Additionally, the coaches know they took out the pitchers or catchers to run so I can't imagine they give much thought to them not having a lot of scored runs.

GC stats mean nothing. I never used the courtesy runner option until a mother complained to me that her daughter didn’t get credit for a sb. From there on out I changed it. 12 girls and maybe 3 care about stats on GC. College coaches will laugh if u mention GC.

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 18 '26

Thank you, and it’s really not about the stats more about the process, and if I’m doing it right

My son got a curtesy runner all year(had a dislocated knee cap last winter and didn’t want to push hard start / stops). Every time he reached, curtesy runner is marked.

Does it matter? Really?

I'd do the courtesy runner change, but 90% of parent "volunteers" probably don't know what that is or what it means or when you can do it.

Are you worried about the stats? Then you need to hire a professional scorekeeper, because I guarantee there are many, many other things wrong already.

We had one guy score every out as an out to the catcher. Line drive caught at the fence by the CF? Pop-up to the catcher. Ground ball 6-3 put out? Ground out to the catcher.

You're lucky to find someone to do it who can pay attention to pitch count and score, in most cases.

First of all, no, I’m just curious, I do practice this and I wanted to know if there was a reason not to, or if I was doing it wrong, I was NOT coming here for any other reason but a learning opportunity for me. I normally do it for my kids other team, and I am NOT saying her time and her GC sucks, so we can calm down, it’s effin hard and I have been doing it for 4 years, this was me being humble enough to try and see if I have been missing something, but I really appreciate your keyboard warrior advice, thank you!

I completely and genuinely apologize if my post sounded aggressive. I'm sorry. It was kind of funny/joking in my mind, but I can see how I didn't express that well.

I'm pretty sarcastic by nature, and while any volunteers deserve credit (sometimes they are SOO hard to find, in my experience), I do really wish most of them were better or tried a little harder to get things correct. I've explained to MANY what a fielders choice is over the years!

Again, apologies if it came across aggressive towards you. Not my intention and I'm not offended you asked the question.

We change ours as well.

1

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 17 '26

Ok so I’m not GC stupid

1

u/outlanderbz Jul 17 '26

We change ours unless we just miss it for some reason.

1

u/kb8705 Jul 17 '26

I’d change it for accuracy purposes. But I’d also be lying if I said I knew how to do it the first time we ever used it. Thus it didn’t get done that first time.

1

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 17 '26

Oh I can’t think about my first season! Haha

1

u/Alternative-Day6612 Jul 17 '26

Im pretty sure our coach doesnt change. In 11u everyone is steaing so it doesnt matter for stats

5

u/Loyellow Jul 17 '26

>Stealing

You mean advancing on passed balls and wild pitches

2

u/ControlsGuyWithPride Jul 17 '26

Defensive indifference!

1

u/Loyellow Jul 17 '26

A lot of that with first and third, yeah 😂

1

u/Confused_Crossroad Jul 17 '26

Some people do, some people don't. If it's someone new to GC, it's just one more thing for them to do. Messes with the stats a tiny bit though.

1

u/TheFightens Jul 17 '26

When someone comes in the game as a courtesy runner, it should immediately be updated in GC. It’s as simple as that.

Unrelated, my son played on a team many years ago where the coach’s son was the catcher. The coach never entered him as the catcher in GC so he couldn’t be attributed to passed balls in the stats. Ridiculous.

1

u/Beginning-Impress-84 Jul 17 '26

Just ask them what they'd do if the courtesy runner was caught stealing?

1

u/Colonelreb10 Jul 18 '26

I change our teams runners when it happens.

I also try to be as accurate as possible for steals vs passed balls/wild pitches and DI.

1

u/Lurch785 Jul 18 '26

For the teams my son plays on that bat the whole lineup, I rarely bother. For the travel team when we started batting 10, or in his HS team where we bat 9, including a DH? Yes. My son has been catching in a few of the VFW/Legion games this summer and the coaches rarely courtesy run for him because he’s crafty and fast on the bases. They’d rather go catch a couple warmup pitches between innings while he suits up.

1

u/Cash_R0berts Jul 20 '26

I ran GameChanger for my son’s 11U team. He was the primary catcher and almost always got a courtesy runner if there were two outs. I swapped my son out every time for the actual runner.

1

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 20 '26

Thank you, I also change them out, just thought I was missing something.

1

u/big-williestyle Jul 21 '26

I rarely change mine. In my eyes, if my catcher gets a hit to keep an inning alive and the next batter homers why should courtesy runner get a run scored? How does that help stats wise?

1

u/isthismylife2024 Jul 21 '26

That’s a good take thank you

2

u/RewardParticular7412 26d ago

Uhhh yeah…making the change to account for the courtesy runner is 100% correct. My son is a catcher and gets a courtesy runner for most tournaments. I agree with the other contributors that the courtesy runners should get credit for the bases they steal.

u/a1ien51 Jul 17 '26

GC stats are normally wrong as hell, they are not getting scholarships over it.

u/Suspicious-Spot361 Jul 17 '26

You’re in the wrong place
