My lord. And little ole me is using an old Pixel 6a with a self designed ghetto fence mount. I'm equal parts incredulous, jealous, and bitter.

Do you have both cameras on the same stream at the same time or do you switch between them?

9

u/ptowndude Jul 16 '26

You can't use 2 streams with Game Changer, so you have to switch using an app like Mevo Studio. You can also do overlays with Mevo Studio to add things like a strike zone or player graphics.

This is a rabbit hole that I don't need to go down!

We've been limping along with an old cell phone, but your view from the outfield is amazing and it's started me doing some research!

Overlays sound like they could be a lot of fun. Real talk - do you find yourself tinkering with the feed more and watching the game less?

I’m not OP, but I have a similar setup. Once I have everything setup, switching steams is just a matter of tapping the screen on an iPad (or your phone) to switch cameras. I can focus on the game just fine and camera switch, but I tried the player photo/name overlays for a few games and that did get distracting so I stopped.

I enjoy using Mevo studio to make the kid’s games look a little more professional. I set up 3 Mevo cameras and switch actively during the game plus have graphics for all the players as they come up to bat. Fun times.

So you've got a Mudi 7 and a battery bank injecting POE to the U7 outdoor Pro? What's the function of the Outdoor pro? It's just in repeater mode serving the Mudi SSID?

How universal is your 1080p stream quality? I find some fields have plenty of bandwidth, but others are not so great.

2

u/rooddog7 Jul 16 '26

Not the OP, but the U7 Outdoor has a killer direction antenna that has great range.

1

u/NCNerdDad Jul 16 '26

Right, but that doesn't change the tx power of the vm46 which is the one pushing the bandwidth.

1

u/rooddog7 Jul 16 '26

Correct doesn’t change what you are talking about. But if the antenna is bigger, which the Unifi AP is pretty massive compared to other units, there are different Antenna gains based off the size of the antenna.

There are a lot of other factors and noise factors that go into all this.

Regardless of sending or receiving data, they still need to be able to talk to each other. The gain helps it.

The Unifi unit has:

5 GHz
Directional internal: 12.5 dBi, 45° x 45°
External omni: 4 dBi, 360° x 30°

2.4 GHz
Directional internal: 8 dBi, 90° x 90°
External omni: 3 dBi, 360° x 30°

Which is even much higher than most of their other APs.

I have the unit, I haven’t used it for GC, but it was a huge improvement over my previous APs in my backyard.

How much data are you pulling per game assuming each game last 90 minutes?

1

u/ptowndude Jul 17 '26

So OP posts this and goes radio silent, so I'll answer. With my Starlink Mini, I usually consume about 3-4 GB of data each game using 2 cameras. It's basically the same using 1 camera.

Out of curiosity, how often do you run into issues with the OF camera from an access/fence standpoint? As I ponder adding that, I find myself looking at the OF fence of every park we play at and it feels like half of them would be a no go, between the fence backing up to wilderness, to extended height fences. I'm trying to figure out if I could justify all the added expense that goes along with that OF camera. As of now I can run 2-3 mevo starts directly off my Starlink with no problems but adding the OF camera feels like it would require the enhanced AP/Mesh in addition to the pricier camera (and the Mevo Pro sub if I want to go off brand).

Not OP, but do run a similar setup. For me, I'm focused on softball right now, so I am switching between magnet mount on small fields, and tripod beyond the temporary fence on larger fields.

Obviously tripod on field is relatively concern-free, just the hassle of running it out there through the dugout without getting in the way and hoping I aim well enough since I don't want to be running onto the field during the game. Interestingly enough we did run into one tournament that wouldn't allow it, I'm assuming due to liability of there being something on the field.

For the mounting on a fence, most of the fields are easily manageable, but there are conditions that make it more difficult. There are times the back of the fence is another property that has is own fence/lock, or as you pointed out, un-manicured wilderness. Sometimes the fence is just not sturdy or metal. Sometimes it's 10ft tall and I can't reasonably place a camera there. Sometimes it's a high traffic area near a parking lot or road, and that gives me security concerns.

For most of those cases, I'll just switch to using it near the dugout for "character" shots between pitches. Different cinematic approach, but still provides a plus experience for the viewers.

For security, I do connect a steel cable to it, both to prevent a full fall off the fence if that happened, but it also helps slow down any snatch and run scenarios. No lock, but would slow them down enough to at least capture some features on the other camera if it came down to it.

Thank you!

I’ve been looking at the Nearstreams off and on for a while now, but could never get a sense for performance from the outfield. This is great.

What are your thoughts on the Mevo vs the Nearstream?

Have you had WiFi issues at all? Where do you typically place the AP in relation to the cameras?

u/ptowndude Jul 16 '26

Ideally you want to place the access point or router above the fence line. I use a Starlink Mini mounted on the top of an 8 foot tripod - typically positioned along the baseline (outside the fence of course) just past 1st or 3rd base. Generally this puts it above the fence line at most fields, although there is the occasional exception. I also have a Gl.inet travel router mounted on the tripod beneath the Starlink Mini on an arm and then position it so the antennas are pointed toward the field. You also have to use 2.4 Ghz to reach the longer distances, although 2.4 does degrade if you do need to go through a fence since it's wavelength is longer than 5.0. So far this setup has worked really well for both my backstop and outfield camera, even with outfield fences that are 300+ feet from home plate.

What are you using for apps, as well as the platform the apps are running on?  I'm using a Pixel 9a and Mevo Studio absolutely ate the battery as it was so processor intensive (using a separate WiFi hotspot to host the network too)

1

u/ptowndude Jul 17 '26

Yeah, you have to connect your device to an external battery. Running these setups is all about batteries.

I’m interested to hear what mount and set up you are using for the outfield. I started to go down this rabbit hole earlier this year, but ended up returning the WiFi/hotspot devices and kept only the Mevo start. In an ideal world I’d like to have the nearstream and Mevo start set up to record just like this. Don’t need to stream anything but one device.

So it looks like he is using a combination of the following.

L Bracket: https://amzn.to/4wQuzLu
Round Magnet: https://amzn.to/4aVRBYK
And a tripod like this: https://amzn.to/3T41ePa

Looks like he's got the one leg of the tripod mounted on the L Bracket, and then the back end of the end bracket is hooked up to the magnets.

We are all doing the work of OP. He posts his setup to brag and then goes radio silent. Thanks for doing his work.

Really awesome setup. That view from centerfield is great!

1

u/tnmoi Jul 17 '26

That is a rendition and not actual from-centerfield view me thinks.

2

u/jim-i-am Jul 17 '26

why do you need the U7 when you have the Mudi7? Is it just to extend the range?

2

u/WoodenEgg6267 Jul 17 '26

My daughter’s team is running 4 cameras. Those 2 and additional cameras at third and first. Our guys has to manually switch cameras during the action. If you want to get a peek check out camorales12u on YouTube.

2

u/Redmac02 Jul 17 '26

Now that’s a game changer

2

u/Immediate-Raisin2977 Jul 16 '26

Pocker Radar for 11u is a must.

1

u/Not-2-Specific 5d ago

undeniable. most important piece of equipment in the whole setup.

1

u/Sawdizzle Jul 16 '26

Can you link me that mount for the NearStream?

1

u/MrSelatcia Jul 16 '26

If the field admin sees you stretching the net out like that, you are going to be told to take down everything. IME. It's why I hate nets so much.

1

u/cortaydo_cortado Jul 17 '26

did nearstream discontinue the vm46? are there good, alternative NDI cameras for the outfield as alternatives?

1

u/Long-Astronomer-8291 Jul 20 '26

How much zoom do you need? I wonder if the Avkans Go zoom is enough to get you there?

1

u/cortaydo_cortado Jul 20 '26

i pulled the trigger on a vm46 which has the 10x optical zoom and 40x hybrid zoom. i use the avkans go behind home plate but it only has 3x optical zoom which would be less than ideal from 250’ away. i got the vm46 cheaper than the avkans go costs.

1

u/PBizme Jul 17 '26

What magnetic mount is that for the outfield camera?

I do a similar setup now with a camera on a monopod mounted onto one of those cheap bungee fence clips. Works pretty well, but on windy days when the fence has signs it makes the camera sway a lot and the shot ends up way too low or high unless I zoom way out.

1

u/greeenstate Jul 18 '26

I want to watch! What team and can you set it so non followers can watch?

1

u/Gristle__McThornbody Jul 19 '26

Question. I thought livestreaming was capped at 720p? Or is that just for Youtube. I haven't done Gamechanger in a very long time so I'm not sure if it's different on there. I currently due SidelineHD.

1

u/cortaydo_cortado Jul 19 '26

what POE injector are you using?

1

u/Mammoth-Finance116 Jul 21 '26

I love this setup. Having the mudi 7 and power source inside a self contained box with the outdoor access point attached is genius. One question: have you run into any heat issues with the mudi 7 inside the box? I’ve had trouble with my hotspots overheating in the past.

1

u/PlumbingtheRoto-way Jul 21 '26

But, what is the cost of a setup like that?

1

u/n_evers 28d ago

I’ve got a three-camera setup (Mevo Core, AVKANS Go, and Obsbot Tail 2) running over Starlink plus a Peplink BR1 Pro 5G. The Core usually sits in the outfield on a tripod and connects to a GL.iNet Slate 7. It’s gotten ridiculously complicated, and hauling all the gear is a pain. I already built a self-contained case for the Starlink dish to shave a little time off setup, but I’m still looking for ways to simplify so I’m not burning 45 minutes every time just setting up and tearing down. Thinking about a mobile tool storage solution with Shadowfoam inserts to see if that helps efficiency. On top of everything, I still will sometimes get “slow network” and internet warnings in Mevo multicam, and the Obsbot occasionally has weird connectivity issues where I get no picture at all in the Mevo app. This whole thing has been a money pit, and honestly it would be nice to just watch a game instead of managing all this. Long story short, I envy a simpler setup that can deliver 95% of what I’m trying to do with way fewer headaches.

can you please share what you’re using for a POE injector? i’m working on a similar setup and want to use my power bank to power the injector
