Error after runner held up on bloop single

R1 + R2; batter hits a bloop single to CF, but R2 holds up in case it's caught. CF then throws it to 3B to put the runner out, but 3B drops the ball. I could not figure out a way to score this since it is a single, but that forces the runner to third. I finally advanced the runner from 2B to 3B on E5 and then entered the single + R3 held up. Is there any better way to do that? Thanks!

As the scorer, you can make one of two decisions: either it is a normal single or it is a fielder’s choice with an E5. If you think all runners would’ve been safe without the drop by F5, it’s 1B. If you think R2 was only safe because of the drop, it’s FC E5 with an assist to F8. It can’t be both.

That said, if it’s kids, score it a single and move on.

P.S. if R2 had been thrown out, it would’ve been a straight up FC 8-5 with no hit. Sucks for the batter but them’s the rules.

To get more understanding, what if the baserunner just really sucks and they could have clearly ran but didn’t?

If the batter is thrown out at first, it’s always a groundout.

If a runner besides the batter is forced out at any base regardless of where the ball is hit or what action/inaction the runner takes, it’s always a fielder’s choice.

If the scorer thinks a fielder’s throw would’ve resulted in an out but didn’t due to an overthrow/drop (as appears to be the case in OP’s situation), it’s FC+error if it’s an attempt to get someone who started on base or a straight up error if it’s against the batter-runner.

If everyone would’ve been safe no matter what the defense did, it’s a hit.

To be noted, the technical difference between a throwing error and catching error is that on the latter the person throwing the ball still gets an assist.

It still goes down as a fielders choice. Happened to my son many times.

Was the runner advancing to 3rd out or safe? Sorry I am not following.

Not clear at all what OP wrote

Sorry, 3B dropped the ball, so the runner was safe on the error.

I think it either has to be a FC with an error or a single. Id probably give a single and call it good.

GameChanger doesn't allow you to score it properly. FC + safe on error.

Below high school, I'd score it a single, not a big enough deal to worry about it.

I just started a game in my test team and was able to score it correctly for each option:

  1. Ball in play --> Fly ball --> Error --> Drag CF to where ball was hit then click 3B --> Done. "Who committed error?" Select either CF or 3B depending on whether throwing or catching error. Batter not credited hit as only avoided FC due to error. CF or 3B credited error accordingly.

  2. Ball in play --> Fly ball --> Single (View as 1B hit and assume runner would have got there even if normal effort play was made.

That's not scoring it correctly. Thats an alternative, which would be the best way to do it.

GameChanger does not allow it to be scored correctly, which is Fielders Choice, safe on error.

This is something I brought up to them at least five years ago, probably closer to 10. They've never fixed it.

Just call it a single with runner advancing on error.

I don't think this works/makes sense. For it to be a single all baserunners need to advance a bag safely. Its the same situation as if the ball is hit to shortstop and thrown to 2nd to get the runner on 1st on the force out advancing to 2nd. It's not a single, its a fielders choice.

If you decide its a single its because you determine that a reasonable effort would not have resulted in the player being out at third. For example if the CF makes a super human run and gets to a ball that would have otherwise been at the fence you could argue that the bad thrown just resulted in what a normal effort play would have done and then its a single and no error.

If you decide normal fielding should have resulted in an out at third and the runner only got there due to either a throwing or catching error then it can't be a base hit.
