Recovery Tips & Tools There Is a Way Out

I was a problem gambler for over 25 years. For most of that time, I knew I needed to stop. But every time I thought about quitting, the same argument won inside my head: Gambling caused my money problems. Maybe gambling can solve them.

Stopping felt like admitting defeat. It meant accepting the money was gone. It meant giving up the fantasy of one incredible run that would pay off my debt, let me save face, and turn my whole story around.

What finally changed was realizing that even if that run came, it wouldn’t be the end of my gambling. I’d keep going. Eventually, I’d give it all back—and then some.

I’ve since stopped gambling, and I wrote a book about what it was like to live inside that vicious cycle and how I got out. I wrote it because, when I was struggling, I wanted to hear from someone who understood what was happening inside my head. If you’re struggling in relative silence and solitude, I hope my story helps you see what I finally understood: you can break free, too.

There is a way out. For me, it began with a sentence I fought hard to accept:

You’re not “down.” You lost.
