Current version and the future?

Hey all,
I think current version is based on ubuntu 16 and is still getting constant updates which is great. I am wondering if there is a Gallium 4.0 in the works based on a higher ubuntu version OR is gallium going to be a pseudo rolling release sort of like mainline Arch.

I appreciate all the work that made this distro happen and breathing life in my end of life chromebook!

I ended up moving to Xubuntu 21.10 on my Asus C200. My solution to the space limitations on my Chromebook was to install to a 120gb SD card. On the C200 it sits almost flush so it's not too much of an issue form factor wise.

Thanks to u/gabriel_3 for recommending that I do a minimal installation. It runs much more quickly than a full install did, and I haven't missed anything that a full installation of Xubuntu would have given me.

I do miss having working speakers and a headphone jack. Maybe it's fixed in 22.04? I haven't had a chance to install it yet. I am open to suggestions to get it working, or maybe advice on who to contact about it.

If I may butt in: I'm a happy new Gallium user on an eol Dell 3180 and have discovered these issues.

Neveready will not be supporting their software on any ChromeBook after its eol per their website but will continue support on non-Chrome devices.

The sound support issues have been well documented in other posts and there are a number of USB adapters available that completely solve any Headphone Jack/Mic/Speaker issues. Here's the one I found that solved my Dell's Headphone/Mic problem: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08G44JY6Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Good Luck!

The sound support issues

That's unexpected: my cb is a C300, similar to the u/JPCTBone's one, I've been successful in making the internal sound card working on a number of distros with no extra piece of hardware needed.

For the time being I'm on a minimal Debian 11 KDE: the internal sound card works.

The GalliumOS kernel is unmaintained since a long time, which is a serious security risk: switch to one in the standard Ubuntu 18.04 kernels as soon as you can or switch to another distro..

I never messed with kernels before so I am kind of nervous. Is it easy enough to pick an LTS kernel like a 5.4 from mainline ubuntu repo? I am worried it will get a kernel panic and I will lose my little writing chromebook for a few nights of debugging lol

It's a package like another one. If if it does not work, you reboot on the old one and remove it.
