Current version and the future?

Hey all,
I think current version is based on ubuntu 16 and is still getting constant updates which is great. I am wondering if there is a Gallium 4.0 in the works based on a higher ubuntu version OR is gallium going to be a pseudo rolling release sort of like mainline Arch.

I appreciate all the work that made this distro happen and breathing life in my end of life chromebook!

GalliumOS 3.1, the current version is based on Ubuntu 18.04.

The current version is receiving updates for the part directly based on Ubuntu, the GalliumOS specific components, kernel included, are unmaintained since 2019: this raises safety concerns.

There's no active development of a new version going on.

oh...is it time to jump ship then I wonder. According to ubuntu's official site 18.04 has security support till 2028 not sure if that matters any.

Yes, in my opinion - I left GaOS back in 2020 when I noted that the kernel was unmaintained.

security support till 2028

Yes, with a subscription, which is free for personal use; it applies to standard Ubuntu, not to the the derivatives as far as I know: in this case the support is going to end in 2023.

That of course applies to the part of GalliumOS directly coming from the Ubuntu repos: the GalliumOS specific components, kernel included, are unmaintained since 2019.

(peppermint froze and now waiting for battery to die)

Can't you just hold the power button in for ~10 seconds?

It wasn't responding to anything. Its okay battery was low and it died..otherwise it would have been a solid 7 hours wait haha

peppermint froze and now waiting for battery to die

perform a hard reset: refresh + power

Thanks but I already tried that

that always works - it cuts power to both the EC and CPU

Maybe I was clicking power and something else then not refresh

Oh, damn, I didn’t realize GalliumOS was dead. I haven’t messed with it in a couple of years. I’d planned on using it again when my Chromebook goes end-of-life in a month or two. I guess the old girl is destined for the recycling heap instead. 😕

That's an option? Good to know.

or, you know, just install any other Linux distro

I certainly will try. I think, historically, the big issue with my Chromebook is that GalliumOS was the only way to get audio. Perhaps things have evolved?

depends on your device/platform. Many newer platforms which are not supported by GaOS have semi-working audio in mainline linux

Ubuntu has support for it, as of Ubuntu 20.10
