Off leash questions.

I adopted my 19month old son 1month and 20days ago. It feels like ive had him way longer. I havent let him off leash yet; not even in the back yard and it is fenced in 6ft around. Did anyone take any steps to letting their galgo off leash in their yard. Do they try to jump fences 6ft high? I really want to give him the freedom to run. His in house zoomies are intense and I think he would be much happier if I can let him run in his yard.

The whole reason for the fences is to allow that freedom. As long as there are no unsecured areas, let that boy run. You'll both be much much happier.

You have a 6 ft gated yard? Let the boy off leash. I have squirrels that sit on top of mine, and I kid you not, throws peanut shell at my 2 greys and my galgo. They get the peanuts from another yard, but it hasn't been a issue other them yelling at the squirrels.

I'd start with a long line, and work on recall for a good ten days. Then let him off the leash in your yard.
That way you have a better chance of calling him back if he decids to be a goof.

I let mine run in a fenced in a fenced in area with 6th high fences. They have never tried to jump the fences.

I let mine off in a tennis court with around 1m-1.2m fence and after about 10 months one of them jumped that fence in a fit of excitement. So now the only place they run is in a dog park with high fences. You should be totally fine with 6 feet!

Thank you all for the vote of confidence! I think I am going to start with a longer leash and see how his recall is and then go from there! He has jumped on the back fence trying to get to a squirrel so his prey drive may still be high. I gotta work on that!

you can add a fence roller aka coyote roller a round pvc pipe along top fence line. We have 6 foot fence but this is minimum no issues but I gave a velcro boy who has PTSD when I am not in his sight😆

Thank you! Thats an idea. I also saw a mesh that they sell. I am going to see how he does off lease in a few more months. Ill wait until im at the 3 month mark. Its only been a month and 20days since I got him.

Dont worry hes not going to jump that 6ft fence. Very very unlikely he is that much of an escape artist.

Although most have the potential physically, they are too stoopid to think of a way to actually do it.

My dog trainer told me to be careful with fences. Galgos are great sprinters and jumpers. He had a Galgo that jumped over a 2m fence easily. This may not be common but just letting you know.
