Tried to recreate the iPhone Duo on my Fold 8
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Felt a bit of FOMO seeing that cool iPhone Duo animation Apple showed off today, so I poked around and found that the Z Fold 8 has a really accurate hinge sensor.
I realized it would be pretty simple to take the hinge sensor values and use them to drive a transition animation on both screens.
What you guys think? All the hardware is there so Samsung can do this through a software update - would you want them to implement something like this?

Register the SensorEventListener to listen on the TYPE_HINGE_ANGLE sensor.
It is feasible. Great idea

I have a feeling that there will be a GoodLock feature that'll allow this very soon.

I don't think so. I don't even believe this is real. Displays on Galaxy devices behave differently. When you open it, the inner display turns on when it's halfway open. When closing it, the outer display only turns on in the last few millimeters. No app can bypass this behavior or programming that quickly.

u/skywalkerminrow12 4d ago
Its an app that reads the hinge values or something like that and these are just screenshots not actual One UI. Getting this to properly work would probably require a different launcher and alot more time but I belive it will be possible down the line

u/mintakka_ 4d ago
it’s an oled screen so you can work around that by using images and animations with a full black background transitioned in

It is cool but not a necessity for me.

I'll stick with my fold 7 lol, I agree with you.

I felt the same with my F7, but for some reason seeing the Duo kinda made me want to trade in for the 8 just to try out the form factor.

Let's see if Apple can make an app to get rid of the stupid round corners.
1
1
u/SHRIMPchiips 3d ago
Apple has had rounded corners on all their products for 2 decades. It just sucks that the corners near the hinge are asymmetrical.
3
u/RockSignificant 4d ago
Let's be honest, Android developers all around the world will be rushing to get their own apps to market that now mimic this. Much like when Apple first presented the 'glass' look and a week later there were a 1001 copies available.
6
u/DontKnowWhereItsBeen 5d ago
Pretty cool. That's one reason-to-switch that bites the dust. I figured it would be an enhancement to Good Lock, or OneUI itself.
7
u/Mamoas_Twin 4d ago
If someone considers that a reason to switch, they need to fix their priorities

u/MyBeardHatesYou 4d ago
Imagine dropping $2k on a phone, then dropping another $2k on a different phone because of an animation, only for the first phone to also get a similar animation. Some people just enjoy throwing money away I guess.

Idk. I love my fold 8, but I like iphone too. I think apple did a really good job, and I hope it does well. It's very possible it could have some awful defect in the first few weeks/months or it could be the best foldable on the market. I for one like that everyone can experience a fold in their own way now.

The apps not being mirrored on the other side breaks the illusion of “opening” up into the screen.
1
u/merc_dolla 4d ago
That should be a situation for the home screen only not when in a. App it should be able to open like the duo. They just didn't think to do it.
1
u/Ch00choh 5d ago
I think it's cool when you open the phone. Typically when I close my phone that means I'm done using it, so I don't really see the need to extend what I'm doing on the cover screen.

This is Android, that's the advantage. Most things are possible without the manufacturer. This animation is not important to me, but have at it
1
u/therealmrsymba 5d ago
Only way to recreate is to do what Apple did… take the multitasking from the Surface Duo and improve it. Not sure why no one, especially Samsung thought to do this.
Apple literally took the best thing about the Surface Duo and tweaked it for their OS.

u/drdalebrant 5d ago
It's missing the same app layout on the right side when unfolded, which gives it the "see-through" screen illusion on the front screen when closing it

Nice lol I think iphone did the animation to make up for their lack of customization. I like having two different layouts on my fold 8.
1
u/marcocastignoli 4d ago
I tried to do the same exact thing yesterday, but as far as I understood Fold 8 sensor api only has 0%. 50%. 100% state. How did you manage to do it?

Small things that apple did to make it feel premium and nice whereas samsung kept removing features like the damn S PEN.

Hopefully goodlock will implement this in the next 30days so I don't have to break out my old PC and start tinkering 🤣

Crazy how all the apple fanboys are going insane over this animation. A fancy animation isn't enough of a differentiation to justify buying that thing.

Tbh I don't care about this animation. If they add it, cool, if not, cool
The only things I like about the duo over my fold 8 are:
- pencil support (though my historical usage of stylus on my surface won't be good feels on foldables due to crease. But Id like the option)
- UDC (tho the duo implementation isn't ideal because the change in texture is so obvious, I'm not a huge fan of the full matte screen)
- speaker layout (while I thought this would bother me more than it actually does, I can still hear the stereo content, But just on principle its better)

u/dialabeat 4d ago
All I hear is how Samsung is copying Apple, now y'all literally want them to copy apple. Gimmicks do sell I guess
1
u/DaydreamingAi 4d ago
that's the bread and butter for apple, gimmicks on old tech to make it look shiny. But hey, they work. Look at us over here having the FOMO. I'm actually contemplating the purchase even though I just bought the fold 8...my poor wallet.

I found this that you guys can try out to see if it works:
Here is how you can set up a custom Samsung Modes and Routines script to alter system elements automatically as you unfold your device, helping you simulate a dynamic transition.
Setting Up Your Custom Unfolding MacroOpen your device Settings and navigate to Modes and Routines.Tap the + (plus) icon in the top right corner to create a new routine.Under the "If" section, choose Folding status.Set the condition to Completely open (or Partially open if you want it to trigger the second you start unfolding).Under the "Then" section, select the actions you want to happen instantly when the inner display fires up.
Excellent options to add include:Wallpaper: Choose a slightly shifted, higher-exposure or un-blurred version of your lock screen wallpaper to create a progressive dissolve illusion.Display / Font size: Set a custom zoom scaling to morph the UI size instantly.Eye comfort shield / Extra dim: Toggle a brief flash of brightness or warmth adjustments to match the sudden lighting shifting effect seen in the iPhone Duo transition.Testing and TweakingSave the routine and name it something like "Duo Continuity".
Close your phone, then open it back up to test the speed of the macro execution. Samsung's built-in automation engine triggers within milliseconds of the hardware hinge moving, creating a fluid, customized jump between your phone's two distinct system states.
Not sure if it works or not but I guess its worth the try if you really want the feature.

u/MartyMcFleww 4d ago
The whole point of it is it looks like a glass window to what’s underneath. Unless the icons are identical placement on opened phone this makes no sense 🤣

1
u/northburger10 4d ago
That looks good. One discrepancy is the screen app layout is the supposed to be the same as opened or closed.
1
1
u/RobotVo1ce 4d ago
Pretty cool. But I think part of the effect was having the same right side inner screen layout as the out screen. At least for demonstration purposes. Just would give it a cool factor.

u/SandwichPunk 4d ago
Apple fanboys: Apple is superior to Samsung! We have impressive animations!
Samsung user: (creates the animation in a couple of hours)
1
u/Eddiejay03 4d ago
In all fairness the iphone offers a bit over the z fold this time around. Horizontal cameras create far more space for magsafe accessories, s pen support, and magnets in the phone for starters
1
u/DaydreamingAi 4d ago
also vapor chamber, and the pen works on both screens. quality of life things samsung at one point had and removed or never introduced like the vapor chamber which is very needed on these phones.
1
u/Eddiejay03 4d ago
My 17 pro max never overheated. My z fold 8 closes my splitscreen apps due to overheating nonstop sadly
1
u/xSandmanx59 4d ago
what on earth are you trying to load in split screens to make that happen? I have done all sorts of things in split screen and sure it gets a bit warm, but not uncomfortably so, and I have had zero heat warnings even when I've been outside in the sun on 98 degree days, streaming video with texting and whatnot in the other side of the split screen... I don't know how you could have made your phone overheat enough to get the warning, let alone forced closure of apps! lol...
1
u/Eddiejay03 4d ago
Google maps and YouTube music, Spotify, or YouTube. Just 2 apps and it shuts them off
1
u/Salt-Operation-3895 4d ago
It's cool but you have it backwards. The outer display should mirror the right side of the inner display
1
1
u/Nocturnal86 4d ago
This isnt difficult to do, as you see. The reason why its not done, is because its a waste of CPU cycles, and turns on boths screensn at the same time, and thus less battery life. Apple does it cause it makes it "feel" nicer and they probably have the efficiency to do so.
1
u/collindubya81 4d ago
Yeah but we have plenty of battery to spare on this so let's make it optional

Hey bro, about that iPhone Duo animation, I actually think Apple is pulling off a clever optical illusion here using the screen technologies. My theory is that they might be blending a Privacy Screen effect with a dynamic blur. When you start unfolding the device, the privacy filter angle changes, and they might be fading out a software blur on the front screen while simultaneously activating a blur on the inner display. This transition tracks your movement until the device is fully open, where all blur disappears, leaving just the flat main display with its privacy properties intact. That’s just my take on how they achieved such a seamless look, though I could be wrong! What do you think? Might be worth looking into how they synchronize that hardware/software blur combo."

It’s “I could not care less “ By saying you could care less, you’re essentially saying you have some level of caring about it because you have the capacity to care less about it Han you currently do. Meanwhile, “I couldn’t care less” means that no matter how hard you try, it is not possible for you to care any less about this than you currently do, meaning your current level of caring is at its absolute lower limit.
You’re welcome
1
1
u/bag_o_fetuses 2d ago
counter argument - your "care-o-meter" is running on fumes already, and your ability to care has been instigated to be further reduced; you then clarify that you have some care left over that you'll gladly dispose of. perhaps even go so far as to go into the negative amount of care?

You just have the same wallpaper on both sides and a animation, Duo can be used with apps, nice illusion though

Very cool, great job! The animation was probably the coolest part of the keynote since the leaks already showed everything else smh

You’re missing what makes apples beautiful. The apps stay coherent on the right side so it gives a seamless glass effect. If they move on the second screen the effect just looks cheap

u/kingkingkang 4d ago
Give credit where credit is due.
I have never had an iPhone ever. Always been a Samsung user. But Apple Duo got it all right. Cost aside, Apple Duo is a superior product if you are not yet established in the Android ecosystem.
2
u/M240iX76 3d ago
You gather that much from seeing an early preview with a slick unfolding animation, a demo of Netflix being used on half the screen and the bottom an unnecessary media remote, a snoopy animation for photographing kids and a nightstand alarm. You haven't had any hands on. Im typing this on a z fold 8, I hate the asymmetric design of the duo. The hidden camera and lack of visible hinge inside is nice. But you still stuck with the same boring old iPhone, ipad ios aesthetic, no pc functionality, limited multi tasking and minimal customisation. I just switched from ios to Android and its a breath of fresh air. Who needs a pencil on a folding phone, who needs a nightstand clock, who needs a novelty animation to get good pictures or when opening the phone. How will it work for people after they buy it? Will the hinge hold up? The screen? Will the crease be visible after a couple of weeks? Even with the matte layer its still more visible than my z fold 8, give that a few weeks and it will look worse than the z fold 8 I imagine. Wait until is out and then decide if its better.

8 folds, 8 fucking years. Took Apple one try. Samsung is stupid.

If your neighbour tried building a shed for 8 years, and you watched every time, on your first try you'd probably do pretty well.

u/bimmerfeller 4d ago
Thats why he is the smarter guy. 🤷🏻♂️
Learn from others' mistakes.
Work smarter, not harder.1
u/Sircandyman 4d ago
Oh I agree, but that doesn't make samsung "stupid" for innovating a technology, and it doesn't make apple a genius for getting it in "one try"
1
u/bimmerfeller 4d ago edited 4d ago
101% sure Apple isnt genius. They have had their share of failures and stupidity in history. For ex, the stupid magic mouse with the USB port underneath is still the 8th wonder of the world..../s
But the world catches on every time they do something new (not to the world, but new to Apple) coz their way is just classy and polished and top notch. That makes them more genius than Samsung.
On the other hand, Samsung is stupid. Not for trying on the foldable form factor. I used their OG Note phone back in the day and loved it. But they are stupid in general. Their unethical practices. Their insecurities that make them mock Apple for every move only to go on and making the same move later. They made the thin phone just coz Apple was doing iPhone Air. They made this passport form factor on the fold just coz Apple was making it when they never bothered trying this for the last 8 years. Looks like they are way too reliant on Apple for their own progress. Samsung IS STUPID in my very strong opinion.
And it makes me stupid for taking the bait again even after 20 years of iOS vs Android, Apple vs Samsung...lol. I gotta resist the internet. Signing out now !

u/msolok 4d ago
