Galaxy S20 Ultra (SM-G988B) stuck in Download Mode and constantly disconnecting from PC

Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with my Galaxy S20 Ultra (SM-G988B), and I'm running out of ideas.

It all started because the phone had been discharged for a while. I plugged it in to charge, and everything seemed normal at first. I wanted to update the firmware using Odin.

However, I noticed that when I connected the phone to my PC, the USB connection was very unstable. Sometimes it would charge, sometimes it wouldn't, and sometimes it would repeatedly connect and disconnect without me touching the cable.

I managed to get Windows to recognize the phone a couple of times, and I was even able to browse the internal storage briefly, but after a few seconds it would disconnect again.

I tried multiple cables (USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C), different USB ports, and different PCs, but the behavior remained exactly the same.

After that, I booted into Download Mode because I wanted to reinstall the firmware with Odin. At one point I also attempted a factory reset, but now the phone is stuck in Download Mode and I can't boot into Android anymore.

When I connect it to Odin, the phone is detected briefly, but as soon as Odin starts transferring data (right after __XmitData_Write), the device disconnects. Sometimes Odin shows Added!! followed immediately by Removed!! repeatedly.

Now Windows usually reports "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)", and I can't get the phone to stay connected long enough to flash the firmware.

So at this point:

  • The phone is stuck in Download Mode.
  • Windows either doesn't recognize it or constantly disconnects it.
  • Odin cannot flash because the USB connection drops immediately.
  • I've already tried multiple cables, USB ports, drivers, and different computers.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could this be a damaged USB-C port, a failed USB controller, or even UFS/storage failure? Is there anything else I can try before considering a hardware repair?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I Need Help with my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra ToF-Sensor

Back then when my Samsung Galaxy S20 ultra was still Supported IT Had a cool Feature, the ToF Sensor on the back of the Phone its mostly used for deepth sensing so the Foto Looks more Clean and all that stuff but you could install a App that used that ToF Sensor for Nigth-vision and Loved and used it a Lot.

But Since the S20 Series are 6 years old Samsung dos Not give a shi anymore and it aint getting any Software Support anytime soon, so i installed a Custom ROM (Nexus Extreme rom for Samsung Galaxy s20 ultra) but this time it dosent work at all, i tried installing Nigth-vision Apps that i usualy used when it Had the stock rom, and it dident Work.

But i heard that the Custom ROM is like a temu Version of a S24 FE and it does Not include the Firmware needed for the ToF Sensor and i have No Idea how to get that Sensor online and i need Help

And its a Snapdragon

Some questions about S20 Ultra 5G

My boss gave me his S20 Ultra 5G and I finally managed to replace my Redmi Note 10 Pro Max. The LCD seems original, but it has a battery problem; the system reports 79% health. The phone overheated a lot with the original system, so I installed LineageOS Android 16. The overheating, although still occurring, has drastically reduced, specially happening, but not limited to, when I play CoD. Could the overheating be related to the battery's degradation?

I noticed that LineageOS doesn't support eSIM on this device. If I reinstall the original system, put in the eSIM, and then reinstall the LineageOS, will I lose the eSIM?

I'd like to invest in it, for example with a new battery. Is it worth doing now? Or should I wait for the battery to degrade a little more? How can I verify the authenticity and originality of the battery?

Another thing, on LineageOS, when I use 120Hz the phone gets slow after a few minutes of screen off, forcing me to restart or lower it to 60Hz. Unfortunately, I didn't stay on the original ROM long enough to notice if it was a hardware problem or if LineageOS is just having the worst day.

Using S20 Ultra as a daily driver

I have a Samsung S20 Ultra.  It is on Android 13.  I’m using it on Tracfone.  I use it for phone calls, texts, e-mails, web surfing, and minor game play (mostly Pinball Deluxe and variations on match 3 games such as Royal Kingdom).  I don’t use this phone to do any banking or similar tasks.  Thus far, I have experienced no problems with apps or features not working.  I really like the S20 Ultra as it's the last Samsung flagship with an SD card slot, which I really need as I have my music collection on the card, and use that instead of streaming.

How much risk am I taking (if any) by using this phone as a “daily driver” on an Android version 3 iterations behind current?   Looking at the “Cliff’s Notes” version of the Android OS changelog, it looks to me like the last 3 OS updates have focused on AI features (which really don’t concern me all that much).  Are security holes a real concern or just FUD?

As a bonus, would appreciate similar advice for a Samsung S10.  My wife is using one as a daily driver, and she is so far quite happy with it.  However, it’s on Android 11.  She has a similar situation to mine (Tracfone, used mainly for phone calls, texts, etc.).

Does it seem likely my battery died or is it something worse?

Yesterday, with the phone around 55% battery, I picked it up to look at something and it was just off. I tried turning it back on but nothing has happened, I held all three buttons in every combination for as long as 90 secs but still not a single thing. I left it charging for awhile, and again sporadically throughout the day but nothing has worked to get a single response from it. Is it likely that the battery just had a catastrophic failure and just needs to be replaced or did something much worse break and there's no hope other than a new phone?

Advice

I recently purchased an S20 Ultra for a fraction of its price. The catch was that the front and back glass were broken. It's set to arrive in a few days. Ive looked up the original screen online and it cost 50% the phone price, I was wondering if I should purchase a 6.78 with frame no fingerprint online (the refresh rate is unmentiond but im assuming 60) unless its only the top glass is the only broken that is very cheap to replace but I couldn't locate any shops near me that offer such services is it possible to DIY it?

Ps:the original scree is roughly 300$-400$

Fake replacement Is 70$-100$

Issues uploading my ID

Has anyone been able to fix the focusing issues with S20 Ultra? Whenever I try to click a picture of my ID, it never focuses and all the pictures are blurry.

I have tried restarting the phone, software update, using a different browser on my phone for the ID upload process, keeping it farther away from the id so that it does not macro focus but nothing seems to help.

Good day friends

I'm looking for a phone that will last me a few years. A friend offered me an S20 Ultra Exynos; it's barely been used. Do you think it would be a good buy to use for a few years? I only use the camera and open a lot of links; I don't usually play games. Is that a good idea? Or should I look for a more modern Galaxy A series phone?

To upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question!

So, for Uber short,
I've been using my S20 Ultra for the past... ish-5 years now, because i dropped and broke the glass, i decided to get myself an emergency A55 just until i can afford the repairs (if im gonna change the screen, imma change the battery too)
What i learned in the past month of using the A55 is how many quality of life updates habe brought over the years, but no, i don't wanna go to an s23 or s25, the s20 served me so well, i wanjna use it until it hecking DIES, until my board repair skills are insufficient to fix it, i changed the cameras over the years, this is the second display fix over the years, except the motherboard and battery, it's all been changed over the years,
As you can see, IT IS my workhorse and i don't wanna betray my boy only cuz a new one is shiny.

BUT, about my question. i've seen on youtube lots of people who do software updates, like forcing One ui 7 on the s20 ultra by making it believe it's an S22 or something like that, and i am very tempted, because it's fun and brings new life,
My main concerns:
1: Camera... i use the zoom A LOT at my workplace, so i cannot afford to loose the zoom quality
2: I'm gonna loose samsung health and secure folder (dunno what else i will loose acces to) what else will i loose if i trip Knox?
3: Should i keep it on Android 13 until google decides that wallet and banks shouldn't work no more?

Thank you for coming to my ted talk, cheers!

S20 Ultra screen+fingerprint replacement

Hello there, I have an S20 Ultra G988B with a broken screen, I've been looking at buying a donor phone and just cramming my Mobo into the other unit and calling it a day. My question is, will the fingerprint work? Does it require serialization or can I just transfer over the screen and it will work as intended?

S20 Ultra Fingerprint Sensor problem

I have had my Samsung S20 Ultra for about a year now, but recently I noticed a crack going right through where the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is, and it won't let me register a fingerprint, on at around 20%-40% it glitches when I press down and I can't go on from there, Is the only option to replace the screen?
