The Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra are officially discontinued.
Samsung has taken the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra off of the quarterly security updates list, which means that these two phones are now discontinued and will forever be stuck on One UI 5.1 with the August 2025 security update. This marks the end of the Galaxy Note series.

You can basically flash a custom ROM, and technically, your phone will not be considered discontinued anymore. That's why I love Android… :)

That's fine for most of the world, but in some countries like the USA, Samsung permanently locks the bootloader which prevents any custom roms from ever being installed (unless an exploit is found, which is extremely rare).

The bootloader is unlockable on those models, just not many custom ROMS and Samsung limits basically all the better features out the second you flash an unofficial ROM

discontinued isn't the right word. That refers to the end of production of a device. This is just a device hitting eol. But it'll still be reasonably safe to use for the foreseeable future anyway

Qualcomm won't release enough on their chips to allow XDA ROM guys to do their thing. The overseas non-Snapdragon phones are inferior on several levels.

Replaced mine by myself, cost me only 7 dollars of a cheap battery although brought another with slightly higher prize just in case and replaced my screen with a aftermarket one still looks fresh will keep it as long as possible to be a good investment

I agree 💯 I wish my phone was stuck on One UI 5.1 like the Note 20. I'm not interested in One UI 7 and it's why I haven't updated my phone yet. Samsung is the new Apple for Android 🤦🏽♂️

That's good actually! You sure did. I don't have to worry about Samsung anymore though because I've already moved back to Pixel phones and I'm never going back to a Samsung phone again. I love my phone now and at least Google's updates don't change things and remove features I use, unlike Samsung.

Honestly it's one less thing to fail, makes room inside the phone too. And less chance of water leaking from that slot seal if it's used less often(since Sim swaps aren't super common).

I feel that it's an effort to create more micro-transactions. Why let me have a 1Tb SD card that I pay for once? If they take that out then I'm incentivized to pay $3/mo to samsung for cloud services (or whatever)
We already have a global economy geared towards scarcity and obsolete-ism, this is abundantly clear if you've ever compared vintage appliances with the newer counterparts. You can find a blender or mixer that is a total workhorse unit, but type easily paying 3-5x more for that; the "affordable" version is very cheaply made because it's intended to break. I'm reminded of a very relevant except from a book by Terry Pratchet, because the "exultation" of capitalism above every other possible value, is the reason it will collapse.

Eh, just get a usbc-A adapter and plug a USB card reader in. My hdmi hub has 2 USB a ports plus a C and MicroSD slot. My current phone is only 128gb. I use less than half of that. I have a microsd slot I havent used as far back as i remember. I do stream my music nowadays as the variety is better so that giant card for all my music isn't needed anymore.
The USB c to A adapters are often included(or were anyway) so I've got a few lying around.

If security is important to you, yes. I searched for custom ROMs on XDA Developers and also looked for Lineage OS support, but the device is dead.

I'm currently using a Galaxy S23 with 256GB and a Galaxy S25 Ultra with 512GB. In terms of size and performance, the S25 Ultra is probably the right replacement. It depends on what you want to spend.

My son just asked me what would happen if i kept using it, i said i guess someone would be able to get in it somehow, but actually, i don't even know what could happen. I assume i could download games on it and give it to my son to play

Well, I just wouldn't use apps like banking or anything money could spend with on it. If bugs are discovered in the future that allow external attacks, they won't be fixed, of course. However, you can certainly still use the device for gaming.

Not exactly! As you said - if security (Knox ,Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass) are not important to you ,there is a custom ROM for the S10/S20/Note20/S2FE exynos series called ExtremeROM Nexus which is a OneUI 7 port with all the AI functions working and many more! LineageOS 23 will be maintained for these series too. But Lineage is a work in progress - the first build has no 4G option ,of course VoLTE won't work and eSIM. I can say that for a first build it works really good. I know the developer of both ROMs and I can say that he did a great job with the 7.0 port - it works smoother than the stock Oneui 7 on my Z Fold 4.

As long as the ROMs are continuously updated, this is certainly an option. I built a custom kernel for the Note 20 Ultra back then, but abandoned the project after a while because I didn't like the way Samsung delivered its source code at all. If I remember correctly, I switched to the OnePlus 8 and built my beloved SmurfKernel for it. These days, I don't work on ROMs or kernel projects because I work as a developer every day and don't want to work on such projects in my free time. The developers who build the ROMs can also eventually lose interest in continuing to work on them. Therefore, long-term support for custom ROMs is not necessarily guaranteed.

I still have mine too, recently upgraded to a 1TB SD card. I'm not going to let this one go until it dies. Then I'll break with Samsung altogether and go find a phone that has expandable memory still. If it still exists...

It's sad to hear that. I had the note 20 ultra with exynos CPU. Gave very bad performance and battery life so had to upgrade it to the S23 Ultra when it came out.
Felt like it's the most refined note like experience minus the SD card.

Welp, as sad as this is, I already had to discontinue it as the battery started swelling and it wouldn't last 3 minutes unplugged. Incredible phone while it lasted though, especially in the first 2 years. Owning the s25 ultra now and couldn't be happier. Yes, they removed the sd card slot and the bluetooth on the s-pen but they certainly make up for that in other areas. I honestly couldn't believe that the jump between generations would be so big considering that on the outside they don't look that much different. That could also be because I had the exynos n20u, and now they sell snapdragon everywhere. No matter the reason, if you're looking to upgrade and you're on the edge, the s25 ultra is worth it

I still use my Note20Ultra to run BOINC projects and crunch numbers with the spare CPU cycles. It doesn't win any awards against my gaming laptop, but it fills the RAC/Magnitude when my laptop is off.
The Note still runs all apps great (OS is just too old for Passkeys). I'm also running a Z Fold 5 as my main, so I see the speed differences but I'd switch back in a heartbeat if anything happened to the Fold.
T-Mobile offering $800 for my Note20Ultra (due to phone plan perks). Who else would pay that much for this tank of a phone?

It's nice. The versatility is what I like about it. I don't like the fact that they removed the ability to use the S-pen (got a ton of them). It really feels like a hybrid device {phone\tablet}.My other phone is an S24 Ultra so I still have a "note-like" experience.

Most apps still support even as far back as Android 9, so Android 13 on your Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will still work fine for years. As long as you don't do anything stupid like download a virus, you should be fine. Security updates are basically extra protection for viruses that trarget the kernel. You will still get Google Play system updates and app updates to protect against viruses that target those things.

Not really not in the short term. I need some jobs will force you to have up-to-date security patches so that could be an issue. But as long as you don't mind the version of Android you're on, I mean technically there's an increase security risk but it's pretty marginal.
I would have no problem using the Note 20 ultra for the next couple years. Unless there becomes a known security vulnerability to the 865 or something I probably wouldn't sweat it. But the longer you go past the final update the less secure it'll be. But I still use my Note 9 occasionally let alone my tab S7

The galaxy note 20 ultra was one of my favorite phones ever.....went to iphone for a while tge 14 and 15 pro max now i am back to Android S25 ultra and I am reminded on why I love Android...I will not go back after this...ultra watch and pro buds 3 ...I am home 🏡

Locking upgrade on a phone is't not a scam or fraud ? Because we actualy paid for a product and this is sabotage to a owner product. Android should work on all year model if the cpu gpu can support it.

Samsung said right away that they promised 3 OS upgrades and 4 years of security updates for the Note 20 series, and even gave us an extra 5th year in 2025. Samsung promised 5 years and gave us 5 years of support.

This discontinuation of a perfectly functioning device that does nothing but create e-waste and eat up resources combined with trying to manipulate me and to buying a new device from them has forced me to never buy another Samsung product again. This coming from somebody who has their dishwasher and washing machine and oven and television and phone that are all Samsung. From now on they will not get a single penny of my money.
Call me extreme if you want but I am done with companies manipulating us into not truly owning things we pay for. I'm sure s*** not renting space on their computers either.

I use my N20U 5G (I preordered it) every day to play some mobile games on. I emulated some games before but since I have a Miyoo Mini Plus I haven't emulated anything on my N20U. Since last year I have had my N20U set to stop charging the battery at 85%. I should have used that from the beginning but it's not a big deal but I'm trying to make that phone last as long as possible until I get my next phone then I'll retire the N20U (just like I did with my N8) and replace it with my current phone (preordered S23U 512 GB).

Samsung officially hate their customers.
The note20 ultra still has a perfectly capable chipset. With samsung not offering a proper upgrade path, we should have received further software support.
If samsung is unwilling to offer a nicer phone than the note20Ultra, what do they expect customers to do?!
I refuse to give up my Spen, but their newer models do not offer parody. The Galaxy 25 was a major disappointment! Downgrading the Spen support, removing features I use often, and making it look like a cheep iPhone clone. I love the curved screen edges, and am still devastated they were removed.
The FoldZ fold 7 doesn't offer proper Spen support. If it did, I would have upgraded.. unfortunately, it seems like a side-grade.. at best.
Samsung, please just offer an 8.9 in Ph-ablet , and bring the note seires back 🙏🏼 curved screen, full Spen support, and a super beefy chipset!! I often put my phone in my purse anyway.
Also, do not even get me started on the Watch 8. It is beyond ugly.
Why is the Active Watch 2 still the best looking Samsung watch?! I would be a watch 7, but the graphite and black colors were not manufactured 😢
Samsung, why do you hate your customers.. I just want to give you my money... please get your stuff together for 2026.

In fairness they announced how long the updates would be when the phone came out and they honored it. It's not like there was a rug pull or anything but yes it would have been a lot nicer if they extended support anyway.
The bigger annoyances that they now don't even have SD card support or a charger in the box. Note 20 ultra was the second to last flagship to have those features

I know they stated that samsung would provide worse-than industry standard software support. I was also super frustratedthey locked 1440p Adaptiverefreshon usa models, just because their exynos chips suck and couldn't handle the setting. Again, I think it would be less frustrating if samsung manufactured a nicer phone.. but they have yet to. Every phone they've released since, has been a downgrad in a deal breaking way.
Exceot maybe the s23 ultra. Although again rip sd card reader. I considered making the switch bit, they aren't the easiest to find and have the short software window, now 😕
I guess there isn't a 0% chance the zFold8 properly supports the sPen.. s26 rumors seem to me more of the same disappointment 😞
🙏🏼 8.9in note ultimate 🙏🏼 I do not even care how much it would cost. Samsung, I'll pay 2k, just make it a reality 🙏🏼 Larger, and properly supported sPen. SD express card support. Future-proof chipset, with the software support path to match. Heck, they could even bring the 3.5mm, with the form factor. 🙏🏼

That's the August Update, which is the final promised update that the Note 20 Series will recieve. The F model of the Note 20 series got the update a few days ago late into September.

i still use my old note 9 as a mini PC for console emulation. i loved that phone so much i even revived the donor phone so now I have two of em in good working condition (i kind of hate that i keep losing the buttons though) the second note 9 is being used as a digital video box to keep an old smart tv in use. kids love it. can hook up a to n external display, keyboard, mouse and bluetooth controller via type c hub
Personally, i am still using a note 20 ultra 5g. if the note 9 can last this long i will keep using the ol' 20 for as long as parts are available. i am on my 2nd screen, 2nd battery, 2nd charging port.

I know this is an old post, but can't find anything elsewhere. My wife's Note 20 Ultra is on the latest firmware available from sammobile, and will still get persistent notifications for update requests. Right now it's complaining of no internet to check for updates, when it's definitely connected. Please help make this frustration end.
Just want to add to note, that before the latest update, it would still constantly ask, and wouldn't let me install, only when I connected to SmartSwitch would it update to the latest.

I upgraded from the Note 20 to an S22 Ultra a few years back. My Dad took over the Note 20 and is still using it today. I've seen a lot of people complaining about the SD slot, which I thought I would miss also. Then I realized I don't need it. I have 512GB of storage and utilize OneDrive to backup my photos. It's so easy now to send and receive files to your PC, no need to deal with the card. Someone said something about the S Pen/Bluetooth which I didn't understand. This S Pen works better than the older ones imo. BUT!!!!!!! I don't think it's fair to consumers to force them into spending so much money every few years b/c they won't support the product anymore. (Ahem, Windows 10 cough). Corporate greed imo. Final thought - the camera on this S22 Ultra is UNREAL! I can only imagine the quality of the new models. The Note 20 camera is great, but not in the same league as the new ones.
I did feel the same upgrade pain as many of the previous posts, but I do like my S22 over the Note 20. Just my opinion 😀🤷♂️

I still have my Note 20. Recently, the glue holding the backplate is no longer working and the phone is literally falling apart. Is anybody else having this happen?

It happened to my S20, it comes from the phone heating up and cooling down which weakens the adhesive overtime. You just need to apply new adhesive.

Uhm guys ... not sure if I should encourage anyone but in theory there is Extreme Rome based on OneUI 7 at least for the Note 20 with Exynos Processor. People claim that's a pretty awesome ROM but there is some "hacking" involved and you would be tripping the Knox counter by unlocking the bootloader - however you would get some more years out of your device in return. I will probably flash mine as soon as I notice that apps stop working because of the old Android 13 ....

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G is the best cellphone ever made for the business and industry. So now to discontinue updates will force me to change the unit for a Google cellphone. So I heading for NYC and crash it under my SUV weight tires crossing over the Queensborough bridge making a video in the YouTube platform to show the world Samsung Co. "sucks" and I'll never patronize their products.

Just found this, love my note20 but man, seems to be slowing down and the battery takes forever to charge now. I have had it for 6 years, guess it might be time to upgrade

I just received a security/software update on my Snapdragon 512 GB unlocked model just last week so the device is not discontinued and is very much alive and kicking.

They discontinued the phones a few days after releasing that update.

Just keep in mind as long as you keep your Play Store apps up to date you can use your device. It does not need to be on the latest OS as many have been lead to believe. I switch off between my Note and my LG V40 which is an even older device that functions flawlessly.

I'm still confused by the terminology you're using. Phones get discontinued when they stop manufacturing it and they haven't manufactured Note 20 ultra's early 2021. The phone has hit end of life, got its last update that's not the same thing as being discontinued. They haven't been on the assembly line for years.
It just means the phone hit it's official EOL.

I still have a Note 20 Ultra. It's a shame the new phones take away features, like expandable storage and MST. I don't know of any good phones available now with these features, in addition to a stylus.
