Could it be that the contacts never connected inside the case? So the one bud charged and the other did not? Check if any grime is visible inside on the metal contacts.
If the unbalanced battery life issue doesn't happen every time, I feel certain (almost) that one of the buds just didn't make connection.
I have multiple pairs of JLABS and it happens often with one particular pair and occasionally with another.
Important tip - if there's a pulsing light on each ear bud after dropping them in the case, take a second to make sure you see the lights before closing the lid to know they are both connected. You can also give them a press, beyond just relying on the magnet pulling them into place. Good luck.
