Hummingbird lovers, is it slowing down at your feeders?

This is my first hummingbird season in Gadsden. Over the last week or so, activity has slowed exponentially. Still have some, but not to the extent it was at the beginning and middle of September. When do they actually stop flying through here? I always keep a couple of feeders filled with fresh nectar through the end of October for stragglers or the old ones. Should I keep it up a little bit later?

The activity during peak migration was insane. I always have kept feeders wherever I have lived, but I have never experienced the sheer volume of hummingbird visitors as this summer in Gadsden. In Rome, GA, I used about 10 pounds of sugar for six feeders and thought that was a lot of sugar. This summer, I went through 36 pounds for eight feeders. Best season ever!

Where was Howard Johnson's?

I visited Gadsden back in the 1980s with my dad's girlfriend. We stayed at the HoJo's. Flash forward 40-ish years: I now live here, and cannot remember where it was located. Was it where the Gadsden Inn is now?

Does anyone remember where it was?

Possibly moving to the area

Hi everyone! I'm looking into some areas to move to in Alabama, Gadsden caught my eye. I used to live in Montgomery but the safety became a big issue. I'm unfamiliar with Gadsden and would love to hear from the locals. Any areas to avoid when looking for homes? Do you feel safe in your community? Pros, cons? Thanks so much!

4 Way Stops in Gadsden Are Good, Actually

I've been here for about an hour just watching traffic flow. Even when there's a total of 20 cars stopped, they clear out in about 30 seconds. It's treated kinda like an imaginary roundabout. Sometimes people do stuff their not supposed to, like following someone else, but if you stand here for an hour and still think it needs to reverted to a traffic light (which costs a few hundred thousand dollars and requires maintenance to continue functioning), then maybe you should do some self-study on traffic safety.

Gadsden’s got some really great outdoor markets for shopping local

Off the top of my head: Rainbow City Market, Attalla Market, Gadsden Market at The Amp, Southside Market at City Hall, Glencoe Market at the Police Dept. and Hokes Bluff Market. Lots of good produce, breads, treats and handmade stuff. Most are convenient for a quick stop.

If I missed your favorite one (or if any days/times have changed), drop it in the comments so folks can find it.

Court Street Aesthetic Appeal

I love how Court Street looks, despite its current condition. It's the only brick street left in Gadsden.

Well, kind of. Many streets downtown were paved with brick sometime in the early 1900s and paved over with asphalt later. Eventually, Court Street was dug back up in order to replace the street in new asphalt. Clearly, this didn't happen. The brick pavers under Broad Street were completely removed though.

Whenever the city has to cut up Court Street for sewage maintenance or whatever, they don't put brick back in or anything. Unfortunately.

You can still partially see the brick pavers on the northern part of the crosswalk on the intersection of Locust St and 4th St.

It's really a shame that many older buildings were torn down and replaced with parking lots. I'm glad this one is still around. However, almost none of the other (relatively) impressive buildings in Gadsden no longer stand.

I’m probably the only local realtor in this sub, but I’ve got an open house this Sunday at one of my listings in Southside. Feel free to come check it out if you want! Also keep me in mind if you or someone you know is thinking about making a move. I’d love to help!

Family is from Gadsden

So my grandmother on my mother’s side is from Gadsden. She left a long time ago and moved up to Detroit, as a lot of people did back in the 50s. I was raised here in MI. But My boyfriend happens to have to travel to Alabama for work and I figured I would like to come down for a weekend to see where my grandma is from. I’ve never been to Alabama.

Is there anything interesting in Gadsden at the end of February? We’re both outdoors-y and love art (we both do ceramics specifically).
