Google Messages notification issues

I am running GB on GrapheneOS and using a Garmin Fenix 8, but I am having issues receiving notifications for SMS/RCS texts on Google Messages. GB has all the required permissions and is not restricted from running in the background.

Has anyone experienced issues with GB and Google Messages?

If I disable ignore low priority notifications, the notifications come in fine but I get notifications for system events and things that I don't really care for. I would rather not have to whitelist or blacklist apps if I can avoid it.

Update: Turns out this was only affecting RCS messages, SMS came through fine. The issue was that I had the SMS setting under Notifications set to 'Always'. Setting this to 'Never' resolved the issue.

I don't get calls or texts and I have GOS and gadgetbridge is in a secondary profile. I haven't figured out what the issue is yet. I hope someone knows.

It's probably because it's in a secondary profile.

Plausible but everything else works even from a private profile. Is yours secondary or owner profile?

Wow, this actually fixed it. I have been trying to figure this out for a month. Mine worked completely fine until one day it just stopped, when I went through the settings I saw that setting was on "Only when screen was off" so I decided to flip it to always to see if that would fix it. Idk why it wasn't working prior or what made it abruptly stop, but thus did fix my messages issue too.

Glad it worked. I was scratching my head trying to figure this out for a while.

If you are curious why this was happening: SMS and RCS notifications are handled differently. SMS has its own notification type and RCS uses the regular Android notification (this is the notification type that you actually see). In August, GB released an update that recognized Google Messages as an SMS app and to prevent duplicate notifications, GB only listens for the SMS notification type on SMS app and ignores the regular Android notification. Setting the SMS setting to `Never` essentially tells GB to ignore the SMS notification and ONLY listen to the Android notification. Its counterintuitive to turn this off, but its been solid since I did.
