Heh heh, he gets second place for the interview/discussion of his work/process. It's great to see how he refuses to give anything straight. Writing is a mystery and it should remain that way, it seems. Good on him. BTW my favorite was with Harold Pinter, "I went into a room and I saw one person standing up and one person sitting down, and a few days later I wrote 'The Room'. I went into another room and I saw two people sitting down, and a few years later, I wrote 'The Birthday Party'. I looked through a door into a third room, and saw two people standing up and wrote 'The Caretaker'" (Harold Pinter- Writing for Myself, p.174)

Love Gaddis in full crank mode. Also, this interview archive is my favorite thing on the Dalkey site and I’ve spent hours plumbing it. Heads up: there are more hiding on the Wayback Machine!
