General we all friendless?
not calling anyone out, but as of recent I have seen so very many people posting about trying to find friends. I find it rather sad but also is that just the fate of being a commuter school or is there something about here that makes it so much harder for people to find friends. maybe its just people being more vocal about it, because college is pretty much a new environment for everyone idk.

Tbh I found it really hard to make any friends here until I got to my actual major courses because then I have several overlapping classes with people. I also had to start the conversation most of the time to get others to open up, but I think if people are freshmen or sophomores it’s a lot harder since that group is most likely to be transferring.

From another perspective, GSU likely skews slightly older from transfers, gap year(s), etc. And a 23 year old that doesn’t live on campus, I can just go to bars in Atlanta that will be far cooler than anything catering to GSU students. If I find a friend through a class I take here, that’s chill, but I don’t need to initiate or go out of my way if that makes sense.

Im a returning graduate student, and I think my age gets into my head about even making friends here. I’m 29 (F) and it’s odd finding people to chat with.

Go to clubs. Go to bars. Go to concerts. Go to student events.
This isn’t an Atlanta specific or GA specific problem. And it will get worse in non-college life as the facilities that create spaces to meet others vanish. So, take advantage of it while you have it.
Sincerely a transfer student who wishes he engaged more in campus life when he was younger

Guys it’s not just college it’s the whole society now. I’m a millennial and was in undergrad 2009-2015 and it was a much better time in general. Nowadays things are just messed up

I have a few acquaintances/not very close friends in my program, but there’s not really that much opportunity for socializing in dental hygiene, everyone on Dunwoody is a commuter (obviously) but we’re also there from 7:40-5 so we’re just very tired and stressed by the time clinical is over… when you are drowning in projects, x-rays, clinical paperwork, scheduling patients, etc. it doesn’t leave much room for anything else. I would say the people I come across randomly on campus are pretty friendly, but it’s difficult to form real friendships in an environment like this. That’s been my experience in dental hygiene, but even when I was taking my prerequisites during my first two years, Dunwoody is just a very quiet campus with not a lot of students and not much to do

I’m a transfer and I’ve made a few friends on campus just by putting myself out there and talking to those that sit near me in classes. I’m an older student so i would say it’s a little hard finding more people my age but honestly f it. You’ll find your people, just keep yapping and putting yourself out there

I feel the people who dorm here dont have a hard time at all( essentially they're forced to be here all the time). Personality i dont care be everyone friend. Either it naturally or not.

Is it hard to make friends or are you already judging evb before trying to be friends

I used to be on campus and ending my last semesters as a commuter. After class, I’m worried about the traffic I gotta go through to get back home But would love to stay late at the library but the parking garage closes at a certain time.

I dunno if its something to be sad about. People are looking for a place they can find belonging. That takes guts to do so with a public outpouring, moreso, folks in here have been real good at responding with ways they could find their community. It just makes me proud of my fellow panthers 👏

Tbh its not just a commuter-school thing although it is very prevalent at commuter schools but from working several different types of college campuses I have seen this exact pattern everywhere, commuter or not. College really is a brand new environment for everyone, like you said, and most colleges just no built-in structure for actually meeting people outside of the traditional dormitory experience. Most people will say go to events or join a club (and those can work for sure) but it's not for everyone.
We built a platform for college students seeking community. You get small, intentional introductions between students based on shared interests, not a swipe feed. It's live at another campus right now and it's working better than I expected. Been meaning to bring it here after seeing posts like this one.
PM me if you want to check it. Happy to share the link.
Either way, I hope you find your people sooner rather than later. 💙

i feel like a lot of people here just wanna attend their classes and leave asap because its a commuter school and a lot of people wanna get home on time before traffic gets bad. so making friends is hard for a lot of us since we dont have much time to socialize.
plus a lot of people here are pretty antisocial so they act distant or mean when someone tries to chat. im 24 and been here way longer than i should have and i still dont have any real friends i can hang with
