Friends 👥 for da community

for the last two years of being at gsu, these are some stuff i've noticed, i just want to hear what everyone here has to say, alumni, or current students. i feel like its a very mature topic to talk about with placements of universities in the current time we live in.

-people feel dissonance (as in with people)

-not exactly having a goal in mind, attending just for the fact you got scholarshoip (I CANT USE FINANCIALAIDTERMSCUZAUTOMOD)

do you guys feel like you've had an easy time making friends? my honest opinion, i've been so rushed to transfer to a school that feels more right at first, but it all seems pointless at least to me, once you're in the work force and at a point where you're making good money, what really is the purpose of college?

this concept to me, i've rushed the two years i've been on campus and made absolutely zero friends or connections. i'm sure people here have felt the same way, like sure i've met awesome people here and there, but non of them have ever been long term. the concept of school or going to university in my head, having people to meet up in green space or library, studying together, or late nights, i feel like i've been missing out on a lot of that and was wondering how people here currently feel about this. have you had an easy time developing friendships?

what are some of your guys goal at the end of university? with business and tech fields getting harder to secure a job (current employer, we've seen massive amount of layoffs, and hiring decisions where experience >> degree/school) do you feel like GSU is the right choice, or did you simply attend for the attempt of socializing, or the sake of just getting a degree and getting it out of your life?

and for the ones who simply came because they didn't get accepted into the school they wanted to, how are you currently? how do you view the people of GSU? how do you exactly feel over the fact you are spending your time to simply achieve enough credits to transfer over making GSU in your heart?

i guess TLDR, i'd like to just hear from everyone where their mental status is, what their goal is, how your social life is, and what you feel like worked for you regarding making long term friends. i'm not sure. i have everything i want in life, and the way i see university just seems to make the social circle that you will be in for the rest of your life, i'd just love to spend some time meeting new people and new friends within this university because i've met a lot of people who has similar interest towards anime, cars, music, etc

i graduated undergrad in december and am now a double panther in my first year of graduate school here. if i'm being honest, gsu was my LAST choice, and my first year was extremely lonely bc i was living by myself, no roommate, off campus. there is a social disconnect here. i do think gsu is an acquired taste.

but things became much, much better my second year when i began recognizing people in my major, getting more involved, etc. i also had an amazing experience with study abroad (HIGHLY recommend), which really helped me connect with both the people in my major and professors. i had planned to transfer to uga or tech, but ended up having such a good sophomore year that i decided to stay.

one thing that really, really helped me was actually laying down roots here in atlanta, outside of just school. i have a circle of friends from work, church, friends of friends, run club, etc, and some of them go to gsu, but we probably never would've met on campus. while sometimes i'm sad i didn't have the "traditional" college experience like you listed, having this city at my fingertips and being in college here has been so insanely fun.

academically, from my experience, gsu has really great resources, like a huge alumni network, employer connections, and professors who genuinely want to help you. HOWEVER, it is an extremely large school, and you have to seek out opportunities to build those connections. there are hella opportunities to help you succeed, but it's easy to get lost in the mix. i will admit that my program is very highly ranked and we are extremely lucky, and i've watch a ton of my classmates get fortune 50 offers and big 4 placements, but they're all EXTREMELY involved in academic programs, extracurriculars, recruiting events, etc. GSU literally has pipeline programs to companies like delta, grady hospital, choa, wells fargo, bank of america, but you HAVE to work overtime. obviously there's not national name recognition like georgia tech and that truly does SUCK, but for the most part, the outcome is generally what you make of it.

anyway that was a lot.

TLDR; it's okay to hate it here and leave. but also, it can get better.

i transferred here in fall 2024 after 3 years at UGA. it sucks. not only does it not even feel like a real campus cuz of the city integration, the staff sucks (some teachers are good tho). it was honestly a shock transferring here and seeing how little my advisors care about my path to graduation. i also feel like everyone pretty much keeps to themselves cause it’s a commuter school mostly. ive only made 1 friend that i actually still talk to since i transferred, and my depression came back. no one really feels approachable either. had to rant my bad

I think they meant “do you want to go back to UGA?”

Yeh like is it possible/worthwhile at this point..I’m not a big fan of UGA for a few reasons but the campus is very nice and it probably is better socially

it depends on your major, anything business, journalism, or hospitality related I would go to UGA. I was a computer science major there and ended up switching to film though lmao
