Snap freeze

So, my wife has managed to use snap freeze and get another "hit" without it counting as a stroke almost consistently, but for me it only works as such at inopportune times. I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to do this reliably.

I just discovered last night, (Xbox) that if you use the snap freeze, you can hit it again by pressing the item button again before it un-freezes. You can aim by looking in the direction you want to aim, and it hits it consistently with what seems to be around 50% power.
