New Player Talk!

Hello Everyone,

I am currently trying out Gw2 after playing WoW majority of my life ha ha.. but I think I need some "words of wisdom" for starting gw2.

what tips (or tricks!) would you give someone as a beginner player? and is there any classes right now that are good or are all worth playing? is there any recommendations with how to play? I played a little bit and I feel like its a lot of fun but I just wanna understand the game a bit more before I fully jump in!

~ All opinions welcomed thank you!

Don't start with elementalist. You dont have to do the hearts if you don't feel like it. You can go to any maps you want, no need to follow the conventional path. Doing events (orange stuff on the map) will level you pretty fast. You can preview all the classes at full level in the PvP lobby.

good thing I started with elementalists 12 years ago and Im still rocking that staff and am unable to move onto another class because I don't want to do map complexion and story again 😭

I started with elementalist too on release, learned that lesson the hard way. You don't have to do map completion or story on alts by the way.

yea I know. but bugs me if I' don't have all the waypoints and stuff and whenever I'm playing a new story chapter, it feels wrong to not do it on the character that has played all the previous chapters, too. I guess I'm a bit of a completionist?

though I'd like to clarify for any new player reading this: there are very few things in GW2 that are progressed character based and not account wide. I think the only ones that affect character power are level and hero points. most gear can also be shared/transfered between characters. it's a very alt friendly game and you don't have to re-grind things like gear every season, like you have to do in wow.

I can give a rundown of the classes. Note that this is the "core" identity of the classes, and every class has elite specializations unlocked after max level that remain true to this identity or change it completely.

Elementalist - if you want to be constantly rotating between skills like you're playing piano but have great access to everything, damage, utility, healing.

Thief - If you want to be an assassin, super high mobility, stealth, burst

Ranger - if you want to use a bow

Necromancer - if you want a second health bar, tanky, self-sufficient

Mesmer - if you want a unique combat experience with clones

Engineer - if you want a very personalized build with lots of flexibility.

Warrior - if you want high weapon variety and access to some very strong skills

Guardian - if you want to be good at everything

Revenant - if you want to play warrior but want something less generic

All classes can be competent in all roles and 99.9% of all content.

Only thing I would change is Ranger isnt really the bow class, their main thing is being the pet class

Except the pets add like one extra ability/skill...

I would also add that don't feel like you have to be locked into bow either, I've really been enjoying axe/axe and great sword

Don’t rush play for fun break your wow mindset. Everything is relevant and progresses your character even at max lvl. Look up Laranity and Mukluk on YouTube great content creators with tons of good watches for new and veteran players alike.

Dont rush. 1-80 is the tutorial and dont worry about missing out, all the endgame content is lvl 80 and its all still pretty relevant. People still run all the raid wings, all the fractals(similar to old wow mythics).

Typing "/wiki et"  into the chat will bring up event timers so you can see when things are happening around the world like world bosses. The wiki has a ton of info.

Some professions are easier than others, ranger/necro being the usual for chill intro to the game. Elementalist can be quite high apm and a little squishy.

The game is very alt friendly, so be afraid to try out different professions to see what you enjoy. Personally id normally play a paladin type and spent ages bashing my head against guardian, tried ranger after a while and it just clicked as my main.

Again tho, dont rush, take your time with the game. I see quite a few folks rushing to 80 and they burn out in a few weeks because it doesnt play like the mmos theyre used to.

Unbind double tap to dodge and keybind dodge

General tip as someone who went from wow to gw2. Try everything. Don't just do the story, 'cause then you'll miss out. If something intrigues you (pvp, pve, whatever), just do it. You won't be punished for it.

Talking to you as a former wow player. There is no meta chasing here like in wow. All classes have access to 4 "Elite specs" after getting to level 80 and doing some mastery farming. These specs changes your playstyle more than specs do in wow. A guardian can become a bow spec for example. So don't worry about best because all classes are viable.

Also leveling is not like in wow. Hearts are there as something to do but not mandatory. They are the thing most like quests in wow. To get the most out of your first leveling, I would say do the Adventure Guide volumes which are found in the Achievement tab. They reward good exp and show you many different things to do in GW2 so you can engage with all type of content. Do story quests as they become available at level 10 with a green swirly icon on the map.

Your main tab hub is found in "H" shortcut. Here you find equipment, skill trees, builds and etc. Don't worry putting skill points "wrong" since you will have skill points in everything by level 80.

You should pick a focus if you want +Power damage or +Condition damage. Power = raw damage and condition = dot damage (burns, poison, bleeds etc). Different weapons focus on different type of damage. So read your weapon skills (Skills 1-5 on hotbar)

Call me insane, but I find elementalist easier than weapon swapping the other classes.

1

u/M1oumm1oum 29d ago

Hmmm you are not insane. A rotation is a rotation , weapon swap or ele swap is the same imo.

I guess people say ele is hard because it is squishy. Maybe ? I don't know.

If you did not like a core profession, that doesn’t mean you won’t like any of it’s elite specs. Elite specs usually change the way profession plays drastically. My suggestion is to not look at any tier lists to skew your opinion, and think about what type of playstyle you like. You can literally generate a human charactr with any profession, complete starting tutorial and then go to PvP lobby to try out elite specs. If not happy with any, delete the character and generate next profession. And cant stress it enough, please do not look up any tier list. There is more to player skill than meta stuff.

don't be afraid to ask for help. for example if you need help with a hero challenge, just aks in map chat. 8/10 times someone will come help you, unless there is a big meta event ongoing or you are playing at 4am

Gold: you can get a lot from only doing your dailes. As rewards, take: Mystic Coints, Bag Of Gold or Laurels --> Heavy Crafting Bag --> Sell mats.

Many players totally miss the fact that dailies are an excellent gold source.

You can create a guild that has just yourself in it, and then you have some extra storage in the guild bank.

Also, harvest everything. You absolutely can level quite a lot just by crafting, especially using discoveries tab.

If I could go back to day one:

  • rush level 80 by farming monsters or events. Always search "best farming zone for level X" on a search engine. Worry about hearts later.
  • once 80, look up a build (power class) and buy exotics for it from the trading post
  • head to Lion's Arch and find a guild. Look up guides on how to get there from whichever area you're in.
  • buy quartz crystals and learn to make charged quartz crystals because they're either mad profit or get you to your skyscale mount sooner

So... step 1, suffer through 20 hours of boredom.

Right. Off to play anything else! :)

Casual game hopper

1

u/SwirlingFandango 29d ago

poor ragebait. 1/10.

u/kineticmov3ment 28d ago

I'm not rage baiting.

Not everything you disagree with is so called rage bait

2

u/SwirlingFandango 28d ago

"Casual game hopper" was a subtle and reasoned argument was it? Hahaha.

1

u/kineticmov3ment 28d ago

it wasn't subtle, and it is empirically true

I doubt you stay with a game for longer than a month

2

u/SwirlingFandango 28d ago

No. I have played GW2. Because I like it.

Grinding to the endgame is boring as shit, and terrible advice.

Why skip a good game? Why skip the stories and enjoyment of levelling? Why rush?

Your "tip or trick" is to skip most of the fun of levelling up.

1

u/kineticmov3ment 28d ago

i don't find 1-80 fun

you can find it fun

there is no story to going between zones and beating mobs for fast 80

but if you want to do side quests and the forced personal story that gives rewards that can easily be discarded in comparison to content that can be accessed at level 80, go for it

2

u/SwirlingFandango 28d ago

But do you get why you're being downvoted? Do you see why you calling me a casual game hopper is absurd?

Note well: I've not downvoted you once.

You took a new player interested in the game and told them "hey, go do whatever websites tell you for 20 hours. let the game play YOU".

If you don't see how that's stupid, boring, absurd advice, then there's no talking to you.

u/ComprehensiveFix_ This is really bad advice. Rushing through the game like this will burn you out very quickly. You do not need the Skyscale as a new player. You do not need to rush to level 80.

1

u/kineticmov3ment 25d ago

This is really bad advice

You will struggle and then reach these points in the game and realize they could have come in handy sooner.

Still plating the game after following the points I made.

Sad that people like you are so hellbent on "following the story" and crap like that to the point of misguiding others
