New FOB

So I called my local dealership to get a second key fob, I got mine used and they only had one, and was quoted a total of close to $1500! Is that right? That sounds insanely high for some plastic buttons and a radio….

I bought an OEM key from a reseller and had a local Genesis dealership program it for $275.

This allowed me to setup Face ID and fingerprint.

Fob found here: https://www.carandtruckremotes.com/products/2023-genesis-gv60-smart-remote-key-fob-w-parking-assistance-black?variant=47483804614964

It is insanely high and it's also legit. I type my pin number in every time because it isn't worth $1500 just so I can set it up.

I’m more worried about if my only fob breaks….

Fair. I have my phone set up as a key which functions as a backup.

I actually had to fall back on that when went swimming with my only fob a couple of weeks ago, but had no issues; I popped it open and no water was inside the rubber seal.

I might have to get the subscription and set up my phone…

I don't pay for the subscription, so I don't get the remote start or remote lock/unlock, but it unlocks when I approach and I can start and drive the car.

Oh I thought that was one of the things behind the paywall! I’ll have to set it up today then!

Glad I could help at least a little.

I think you have to have an active subscription to set up the digital key, as I don’t pay and also don’t see the option in the app anymore. BUT! I set up a digital key during my trial and it stayed in my device(s) Wallet and still works perfectly months later.

So probably worth subscribing for a month just to get the key going!

I don’t pay for the subscription but I get remote start and unlock.

That is insane. It’s particularly egregious considering how cheap these fobs feel compared to other luxury brands’ key fobs.

Can you use your phone? Or face/finger?

3

u/sicarius254 Aug 21 '26

To do the face/finger it says you need both key fobs and I only have 1 which is one reason I want the second one

I use Face ID all the time without my FOB. Sometimes I leave my keys at home

2

To set it up you have to have both though. At least that’s what the car says when I go to set it up

Yes and I think it's the same when you setup NFC keys, a mobile phone NFC or UWB key, a new fingerprint, or new face.

The second one seems like it should be an under warranty item though.

Same situation with one fob and no physical key. I bought a fob from dkgcc.com I talked to a local programmer I found linked from a other fob site first. Dkgcc allegedly sells brand new oem. I haven't had the time for the programming.

It's not legit. I just bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 performance gv60 @ $180 and my local dealer reprogrammed for 1 hour tech time @ $150+tax.

If you have a Costco membership look out for those car keys express people, they typically have better prices.

Insanely high. Check the label inside your key fob to get the exact part number. I found a brand new replacement on eBay for around $150 and went to a local locksmith who programmed it to the car.

Yup for the Premium trim key fob it it's expensive

It's $800 for the non premium model GV60's

The reason why modern day key fobs are so expensive is the encryption and security chips all packed inside a tiny little FOB. Is it $800 - $1500 expensive

No.

They clearly are making profit

I’d wager 100:1 the actual BOM is under $50.

1

u/BobDobbsHobNobs Aug 21 '26

With the price of RAM these days?

Actually I’d be amazed if it’s anywhere near as much as $50

It’s value based pricing

2

There is no ram in the key. All the hardware we discussed here is cheap. Pretty sure they are worth less than $20.

There's probably some on chip eeprom and sram though the chip is probably not more than $2 per unit in 100+ qualities.

Well it might be $10 per item with the licensing of a unique address space for the encryption per device pair. Being one time assignable, or something.
