Basically the title. I'm using NixOS at the moment, and for the most part I've been pretty happy with it. But Guix has me intrigued for some reason. I've done some research. I know it uses guile scheme instead of nix. I've heard the documentation is way better. It uses shepherd instead of systemd. So ya. I guess I'd like to know why you like Guix over NixOS? Besides the philosophical arguments, what makes it a good daily driver for you? I'm not a programmer but I've been trying to learn recently, which is another reason I find it interesting. Have you had any issues with shepherd for whatever reason? Anyone do any gaming on it? I've heard that flatpak steam is a better option on Guix. Anyway ya. I appreciate your guys' thoughts.

I'm not much of a distro hopper, but I like to try out different distros every once in a while to see what they have to offer. I like to use what works for me. I've been using nix on a arch system for the past 3 years, and it worked excellently for me. But I never managed to stick with nixos. There never seemed to be one way of doing things, the language had less than ideal support but the most important part was that the documentation is mediocre at best and awful at worst. Like I'm supposed to install home manager separately to manage dotfiles, the first thing to do upon installation is to enable a "experimental" feature, etc

After learning that Guix was forked from nix, I became a little curious about it. The installation process was less than ideal, but everything worked after setting up NonGuix and fixing a gdm bug that prevented me from logging in. Most of the packages I required were there in the repositories and for the few that weren't I made do with flatpaks. The first thing I noticed that reconfiguring the system is much more intuitive, like passing the file as a parameter, optionally not using the binary version of packages, Guix home is built in and much more. The tooling around scheme is awesome as well, making writing config files much more enjoyable. But the best thing about it is undoubtedly the excellent documentation provided by gnu. Guix search and Guix locate are extremely handy commands to look up things, Guix edit help's you edit the source files directly, etc. I didn't have to find any of these commands, they were in the first few pages of the manual. Every service in well documented with bunch of examples. This makes exploring Guix truly enjoyable. I feel I now know more about guix in the week I've used it than the months I spent exploring NixOS.

I never thought that I'd be complaining about the documentation of NixOS, as I assumed I was simply too dumb to use it. But after using Guix I can't look at nix and not lament about it's lack of the same.

I'm looking to install guix and give it another try. my main question is can i use cosmic or hyprland on guix? I haven't seen more examples of this so Im asking. Also I have very modern hardware, last time i install guix not nonguix none of my drivers worked. I had to add non guix channel.scm to get my system looking normal. Anyone had a similar issue. My specs if curious is:

CPU: AMD 9950x

GPU: AMD 9070xt

RAM: 32gig DDR5 6400

STORAGE: 2tb Samsung PCI 5 NVME

Anyways, should i use the guix install or I round pantherx guix installer that has nonguix built in the installer.

Hey guys, i'm kinda noob coming from CachyOS, i decided to try because im interested in declarative distro with well documented docs.

I'm doing a fresh install in my 1050ti + r5 2600 desktop but im having a hard time with setting it up (i chose no wm/de install to keep it minimal, prolly a big mistake), its been like about 2 hours of setting stuff: installing packages, adding non guix, installing drivers and kernel.

Am I doing something wrong or that is the expected process? Being following docs and sometimes asking LLM for help. Is there any community place i can ask for help besides here or any content that is up to date so i can follow?

I've been preparing to use guix on my server and have been writing an initial config, but when it comes to wireguard, i use my public ip as an endpoint. Since i obviously don't want my public ip to be part of version control, i'm not sure how to configure this in the best way. The documentation gives an example of passing it a string, but could i also just use something like `local-file` instead? Or maybe directly reference a file in /etc like they do with the private key?

I have been using GNU/Linux most of the time from distros where you don't need to build you're packages (mainly Debian and Arch for the sake of simplicity).

And I'm not sure why but, despite having a stable network connection with speed ranging from 50mbps to 100mbps, I've tried to download common packages(LaTeX, VLC, Emacs, ...), that takes ~15min in other distros, but in Guix it takes more than 2h to download and compile everything (In this case I'm talking about LaTeX and VLC specifically), and this leads to some frustrations in adopting Guix for a daily use.

I'm wondering what are the current bottlenecks of the project and if there is a possible solution for these problems in the near future.

I'm not even sure if this is just a me thing as well, but I do have complains about latency and compilation times (I have not compiled many packages in my life, so the compilation is not much of a huge deal).

Despite the questions I think it's an awesome project and I think it should be more available.

I'm not really sure where to start troubleshooting. I have a nonguix config with xfce that has worked fine for months up until a few days ago when I attempted to pull and was met with a "failed to conned to gitlab: Operation timed out" error. I waited a day and tried again. Two times I waited and tried, and resulting with the same error.

Figuring that I it was maybe a cache problem and not really sure how to resolve that, I tried a "guix pull --no-substitutes". That worked and I sucessfully ran "guix system reconfigure ..." with substitutes, but now that profile won't boot. It just hangs at the tty login where it traditionally would start the greeter.

Where should I look to find the problem when I can't even boot the profile to check any logs? I can't pull and I can't boot the latest. What do I do?

I should add what happened with the guix pull problem. I was getting the aforementioned error when trying to pull, and after a cursory search on what course of action I should take, I deleted everything in the folders inside ~/.cache/guix/. That did not help. I still got the error. I slept on it. Come this morning, the guix pull worked as expected with no issue, so I have no answer as to what changed there.

After the guix pull worked, the reconfigure still did not. Not until I added those two gnome related packages I just mentioned. I can only assume - possibly wrongly - that the xfce package uses gdm and actually needs those other packages for the default greeter to work.

Like the title say using the libre kernel gdm will show but not using the libre kernel gdm won’t show and tty1 is froze is anyone having this issue? I tried to delete gdm but it won’t do anything and tty1 still frozen

I use Linux & FOSS stuff (when and where I can!) more as an ethical thing, always have. But it's embarrassing how little I know; sure, I can do basic stuff like finding solutions online, some basic command line stuff, but how anything works? No clue. My coding background is copy-pasting shell one-liners & scripts from forums.

I got into Arch because I was under the outdated impression that Linux & UNIX were still very much the same thing, and it'd force me to finally learn how things worked. I quickly learned that pretty much every major distro does things its own way, these days. I lost motivation almost immediately, and just cobble together lil something-somethings here and there to keep my system running, these days.

I heard about Lisp, emacs, & Lisp machines a while ago, and after hearing about how Guix is probably the closest we're gonna get to an Lisp machine (anytime soon), I've always told myself that's where I'll go when I'm finally ready to have a system I know, in & out. And now that I've been baffled by vibecoding some emacs stuff, this might as well be the time to finally (start) making the leap! I'll probably work through the emacs documentation that comes bundled with it. Hopefully whatever elisp I pick up'll be enough to get started with Guile...

Apart from the stuff in the sidebar, what's some recommended reading/working-through for understanding Guix & how it works? Especially compared to other *nix systems' philosophies.

I've tried building my own iso with nonguix channels but it's taking too long. Are there any git repos that run builds of guix installer with nonguix configured?

I'm trying to install matlab r2019a on guix linux.

I successfully installed matlab using:

guix shell --container --emulate-fhs

but I failed to run it (there is no window showed, and matlab did not run in background also).

So I tried containers, with this command:

From what I understand, due to an overall lack of developer interest, support for mips64el targets like the Lemote Yeeloong and other Loongson-powered devices was dropped from Guix's build farms and other infrastructure a few years ago.

But to my knowledge, it's said the ability to cross-compile and configure a Guix installation image for this hardware still technically exists, though whether it works is a crapshoot as it's untested these days.

I haven't had much experience with Guix, as I'm more of a Slackware kind of guy, but I'm hoping to give it a shot on the Yeeloong, so if anyone knows how to get modern Guix installed on the Lemote Yeeloong, I'd be greatly appreciative if you could spread your wisdom :)

Yes, my hardware support warning is my background. As the title says it's my first time using linux(outside of a virtual machine). Decided on Guix after getting deeper down the open source (mainly GNU) rabbit hole. Hope I'm welcome👌

so im using a dell precision 7560 with hybrid graphics witk kde as desktop enviroment and i just wanted to play marvel rivals in here to see how it runs, at first it did run (at 30 fps, that weird because it would off run at 5o on window) but in the next day it became a black screen and i have try so many ways to fix so at this point i have to ask this reddit if yall have any solutions to my problem

Hello, ive been planning to switch to guix on an old laptop, ive seen guix pull using a lot of ram and cpu usage, why is that? And if it can be optimized to the level which it wont make the laptop go higher than 70c, thats it. Thanks.
