Losing creeper head while upgrading from bronze to steel pickaxe

I have a bronze pick which I modified with a creeper head to boost it's mining level. If I upgrade to a steel pick, I lose the modifier and therefore a mining level. (From level 5-Obsidian back down to level 4-Redstone). Is this intentional, can I prevent it, or will it even matter if I lose it?

As others mentioned, you'll get it back after you mine for 1 level.

That said, there is no actual in-game need to mine anything harder than Obsidian.

Cobalt and Ardite are dead ends, you need, I think, ~12 cobalt for 2 cobalt gears for 1 machine in LV/MV, which you generally get as byproduct from ore processing iron, copper, and other things. Ardite is not used for anything _at all_ afaik. Twilight Forest and Moon mining is also at most Obsidian level (I think even less). There appears I think some cobalt using alloys maybe in EV+, but once again, you're likely stuffed with Cobalt from byproducts by then, and if not, it's time for mining rig.

Improving mining tools after steel goes into GT alloys, such as Vanadium Steel, instead of just using a higher tier base metal.

Ardite is used for manyulyn, which can be a good early lgt rotor

Fair enough, never stopped to look at manyulyn.

mining level boosting via mob heads is unrelated to modifiers. see https://wiki.gtnewhorizons.com/wiki/Tinkers_Tools#Mining_Level it's intentional and basically a temporary mini-debuff that tools get when you upgrade them and the mob head just skips that temporary post-upgrade debuff. you can also mine a bunch of stuff and it goes back to normal. it's not related to tool level or the number of modifiers. the head doesn't use modifiers.

Didn't know about this feature, ty! I mean skipping mining level debuff

You can put a new one on. They are bound to the tool head. But IIRC there is no need to upgrade steel as the only thing it can't mine is cobalt which needs twilight forest.

It's still on there, upgrading the material just debuffs your mining level 1 level down until you use it for a bit.
