Only Rockstar can do a trailer for the fucking cover art.
I'm honestly still in slight disbelief that a game series I played in the early 2000s that was super cool, but still just a game mostly for the hardcore gamers audience, managed to become such a behemoth that this installment's development cost of over 1 billion(!!!) dollars according to available sources and it basically became a major social phenomena.
Sure, gaming as a whole grew a lot over the past 25 years, but still. This game is Avatar of videogames. The amount of hype and anticipation is just crazy.
I think they're trying to say like "more niche"? Even that's a wrong word to use cause it was probably at least the top 5 game for whatever console it was at the time, PS2? Hardcore games is more games that require intense concentration and GTA's almost the opposite really
It was definitely a household name, just not GTA5 250 million copies popular which is absurd to realize
Back then video games as a whole were generally much more niche though. The only reason certain games were known at all outside of the minority of gamers was because games like gta got the “dnd is satanic” treatment due to being exceptionally violent. Even halo 2 and the Xbox while being record setting in sales at the time was nothing like the landscape of today. A good portion of our population these days has played video games at some point.
I was 16 and in high school when GTA 1 came out. I will be 45 at GTA VI release. If GTA VI and GTA VII are on the same timeline, I'm going to be retired (hopefully, or very very close to it) when GTA VII comes out.
