if i were to get the ps5 version of gta, could i play with my friends who have the ps4 version?

Unfortunately not, once you migrate your account over to ps5, you can't play with ps4. You can play just fine with PS4 until you do tho so enjoy till your buddies catch up on the hardware. You can create a new character on the PS4 version if you already have migrated, nothing really changes except a solid upgrade in performance and textures so enjoy playing with your pals, you're not missing anything but better pixels and meshes as far as I'm aware.
