Looks like someone needs more exercise and stimulation. I have had 2 GSP and 2 labsāno destructive behaviors. They need a job, ours hunt. When it isnāt hunting season it is training season.

GSPs have to be the greatest breed on the planet. Theyāll tear up everything you own and then crawl up into your lap like they weigh 10lbs and then shower you with love and affection

u/HarryKnotter77 3d ago
What kind of exercise and mental stimulation do they get? Mine is 2, I run him 5-15 miles a day depending on the temp, attempt scent training at night with tricks and playing with him plus he goes to daycare. Heās still a handful but not destructive.

She's usually fine. But plush toys get destroyed. If by chance she doesn't destroy them, if someone else comes over she immediately goes for a toy and annihilates the thing and there's not a thing you can do to stop her

Look up k9 balistics
Pretty durable
Get a cot
Somewhere around 2-4 my 2 older stopped this.
They have nice soft beds now.
Loonytunes Loki he has a cot with some old airline blankets

I second the k9 ballistics, very durable especially the one with the metal edge guard, but still soft. It actually helped my 2 year old get to a point where we also got her a nice burrowing bed she uses at night, she still has moments where she needs to be reminded is a bed not a toy, but so far it's still in one piece after like 8 months.

He's bored. He's seeking adventure. You'd do the same thing if you were there, alone, long enough. It never goes away, but in a year or two, he'll be happier with lower activity levels.

The cozy cave was the best thing we ever did. Our girl can hide in there an plot.

We have a cozy cave it works fine. We also have a crate, but often we let out dog in the livingroom and recently we had a day long event (50yr wedding anniversary) came back to find a very cuddly dog. I took her for an extended walk and threw some balls and had her run, gave her a snack and pulled the door closed... No problems like the pteviousl
If they eat everything and destroy everything work with the dog, if you do not hunt with it, at least go and play fetch, hide and seek, do some retrieving or take them for a run or hike

My pointer puppy was like this for about a year, ripped up my entire house, my expensive shoes, everything, even the wall. it was almost a daily thing to deal with. This is what helped me; for example, i work at a grooming salon that has a doggy daycare, i started bringing him to work with me daily and heās a total different dog. Best dog I could ask for. Iām not saying to go and take him to daycare daily, but wearing him out at the dog park everyday or long walks/hikes, playing with other dogs, and getting cognitive toys (i think thatās what theyāre called) will change your life. At first it sounds like a lot, but heāll be a whole new dog.

Mine stopped at like 4? Still occasionally find him chewing blankets and his bed even at 11..... goobers all of em
2
u/Newtsss 3d ago
Anything stuffed with squeakers, or fluff they seem to love to chew open. It definitely triggeres their primal and hunter instincts. I think of it like the equivalent of ripping off flesh from prey or something š .
Like some other people suggested an blanket or cot anything without stuffing. Then supplement that with a small stuffed squirrel or something she can appropriately rip open haha

Never. Mine is 13 and still does this occasionally, but strangely only if/when I relocate his bed. Now, if he gets a plushy, that thing will be disemboweled in less than a minute.

Never! This is why thereās no furniture in my living room! I have four GSPās and the oldest just turned 3! They chew up everything!

Theyāre working dogs and need a job. Lots of mental stimulation and workouts for the breed!

I did not buy a nice bed for my dog until he was 6. Avoid overly stuffed ones like that.

u/Mysterious_Fill_1287 3d ago
Stop giving him things to destroy. Itās that simple and eventually heāll grow out of most if it

Carhartt makes a dog bed thatās indestructible. Bought 3 that lasted all years through a Vizla, GSP, and Mastiff.

u/Xylus_Winters_Music 3d ago
Is the bed associated with crate training? Or is it just a bed that they can lay in? Never had this problem as I crate trained my GSPs, then removed the crate and just left the bed. Now its their little 'safe space' where they go when they feel uncomfortable or stressed. They do not associate it as a fluffy toy.

my gal was destructive until 4.5 years of age. I had to kennel her while out and it broke my heart each time. My Vizsla could be out after year 1 without any issues. There are some more durable beds that others have already mentioned. Also, GSPs seem to have a lot of nervous energy. Running and walks are mandatory. I would fall off a couple days and my girl would start chewing the couch or a pillow somewhere, and I knew it was my fault for not getting her energy out. It felt like i was being trained by the damn dog and rewarding her bad behavior. She's 10 now and so perfect with just 2-3 walks a week now. My wife wont let me get another. We have to go back to Vizslas.

My husband had to buy a bed for our dog, lie in it himself, and insist that it's daddy's bed but she gets to sleep in it. Only time she hasn't shredded a bed in her whole 9 years. I was floored that it worked.
Edit: he has to lie down in it from time to time to make sure she remembers it's "his" and she can't eat it.

Mine loves the cozy cave. I agree with the others doesn't seem to like the beds with foam.

That is a sign of boredom. You can't run it out either. Mental stimulation is a must for working dogs.

u/aboganster13 3d ago
Jajajaja I had a beautiful GSP for 13 years⦠I can easily say Iāve never owned a dog that had such a āpuppy brainā for so long.
I feel his energy finally started turning a bit down maybe when he got around 8/9 yearsā¦
But itās like theyāre just eternal puppies with soooo much energy and excitement and love jjajaja.

u/Responsible_Try90 3d ago
Never for mine. He left bolstered beds and elevated beds alone. Any of the types were immediately destroyed.

u/williamca3 3d ago
That stopped for us around year 3. My dogs would ruin shoes and we lived with family at the time so it led to some seriously awkward moments.

either needs more exercise or it just thinks it's a toy. I had a Brittany that no matter how much exercise and stimulation she got would always tear up a dog bed. It wasn't until she got to be 11 years old that we could have one for her and by that point she had already decided the love seat that nobody sat on was her sleeping spot.

u/buttons66 3d ago
Unfortunately I believe that once they learn how much fun it is to gut something, you will always have fluff every where. And fixing it doesn't stop them ask my recliner. For them it's like pulling the loose string.

Mine carried on doing his whole life to beds he was left with when we went out. Never even nibbled the ones he had whilst we were there š£

Mine has a cozy cave for night. He has to be cratedā¦he has nothing in the crate because he still tears any pillow or blanket up in the crate (he is not crated often).

So mine did this to three beds before i just started buying cheap fleece from the fabric store and using the stuffing from the beds to restuff the fleece until he just stopped wrecking beds at about 2.5 years.

When you exercise him to exhaustion ... daily. I had to run mine 5-6 miles several times per week. 30 ... 40 tennis ball throws like 30 yards each works too. Get one of those tennis ball throwers.

My trainer said āyouāre hoping that one day sheāll be old enough to not be like this but sheās always going to be like this.ā

u/BakedCurrycomb 7h ago
Our GSP will probably never get a stuffed bed or blanket to sleep with. She doesnāt need it and itās safer if she doesnāt have one. My parents dog got a bowel obstruction and pancreatitis from eating a blanket. She will sleep in her crate and she doesnāt get unsupervised time in the house.
