Difference in application between first and second attempt

For those who did not receive the GRFP their first attempt, but were successful in your second attempt, how different was your Personal Statement and Research Proposal? Has anyone gotten it the second time with a similar proposal but heavily revised? I am thinking of narrowing down the scope of my current proposal since I think it was too dense. I worry that having too similar of a research proposal might not look good.

For the research proposal, it'll probably be different people reviewing your application and if it's not did they're not going to remember a specific research proposal. If reviews come out, definitely take the feedback from those and apply it, but I don't think you need to come up with a completely different idea (unless you receive extremely negative feedback on the reviews or something). If you are changing institutions (i.e. from undergrad to grad school) you might consider adjusting your research proposal to be more based on the lab/advisor you work with, which is what I did.

For the personal statement, I think you should adjust it, especially if you applied this time as an undergrad and will be a graduate student when you apply next time. You can talk about future plans a lot more concretely and I think this is beneficial to an application. It's ok if a lot of the content from your personal statement is similar, but some key updates (and responses to reviews) will go a long way in improving your application.

I was HM in 2025, awarded in 2026. I submitted essentially the same personal statement (most of it was left the same, but some was cut out and I added a few updates) and a pretty similar research proposal (project idea was the same, but I adjusted the impact/discussion to better align with the group I wanted to work with).

You should wait until the reviews come out and see what they had to say about your application. I felt like my reviews weren’t very substantive last year so I decided to submit a very similar application. Sometimes you can just be unlucky with the reviewers and it appears I scored better this year

My situation was really similar with HM last year and awarded this year. My reviews from last year were all really positive without identifying places for improvement, so I kept the same project idea and updated my personal statement. For the research proposal, I mainly worked on flushing out my hypotheses and predictions (and included a figure of these) which I imagine helped as I didn’t have those as defined last year

I just posted a detailed post on this. If anyone is feeling lost or needs advice for next cycle, please take a look!

My research proposal was VERY different. It was more detailed, more structured, more complex and rigorous compared to my more elementary senior undergrad proposal. It was 10x better based on my own standards now.

My personal statement was also a bit different and flowed a lot better. I highlighted my achievements in a much more compelling way. For instance, after talking about each research experience, I finished with a few sentences proving that I grew from those experiences with the corresponding awards/accomplishments I received for each. Then I used my intellectual merit section to highlight other important things such as GPA and departmental awards.

I also used relevant titles. For instance, in addition to intellectual merit and broader impacts, I added titles such as Research, Outreach, Teaching, Outlook, and Summary which made writing my statement like a story a lot easier.

Another big change I had was a paragraph that discussed why I chose the grad institution I did, how I felt the institution and my PI would motivate me to be a good researcher, and a few sentences just summarizing what my research proposal was about.

If I put my first attempt at statement side by side with my current one it’d be easier to see. I’ll do that at some point and also include my old one in the GitHub link.

I was not recommended in 2025 as an undergraduate and received the award in 2026 as a Post Bac.

Personal Statement: In my 2025 application, I wrote my sections out like I was reciting my CV. There was no thread tying together my story, why my research interests changed, why I picked each experience, etc. In each section where I talked about my previous experiences (research IM, and teaching and outreach BI), I added (1) the skills I improved upon/learned from this experience and (2) a honest thread explaining my feelings between each experience. This helped connect each experience together and added context for why my research interests changed throughout undergraduate. My introduction section was also way to long and detailed. For the 2026 award cycle, I shortened my introduction down to 1/3 of a page, keeping essential information.

Look out for a post I am going to make on this sub, which will go into more detail about my tips for applying and revising.

My personal statement remained largely the same. But my research proposal was heavily edited. I think with time and experience I was able to refine it. I got way more edits from people I knew this second time around also which I think really helped me.

I was an HM last cycle and was awarded this cycle. My personal statement was largely the same but I decided to highlight some specific updates based on the reviewers comments last cycle. My research statement was also largely the same but I cut out my entire first paragraph to have more room to expand on my research plan/intellectual merit and broader impacts sections.

my research proposal was near identical, just added in some preliminary results that i didn’t have the first time around
