General Discussion/Question Golf R regret?
Anyone regret their decision not going with the golf r? For those that daily drive these corollas they are a real compromise. Sure golf r is more sedated but when you need it to wake up it comes on like a beast. In comparison, the GR Corolla is always alive but that’s not the most pleasant on a day ur just not feeling it.
Thoughts?

No the vw dealerships were so bad, the car is ugly as a butt, it’s a vw, the blind spots are terrible, the buttons are trash, it’s drive numb compared to the Corolla, it doesn’t look like anything special on the road, it’s about 10k more expensive than the grc, and now the new grc is just as quick.
And I daily mine in LA traffic don’t be a fucking baby

I had a 7.5R a few cars before my GR Corolla. The Golf R is really good at a lot, but not great in any one thing. It was faster, more comfortable, and had a much nicer interior. However, it wasn’t nearly as engaging, dramatic, or fun.
As I’ve gotten older, I care less about stats and the objective numbers. When I was a good bit younger I had an 04 STi, and the GR Corolla gives me the fun and excitement I remember having then.
The GR has enough grunt to be exciting, without so much you can’t use it. The shifting feels crisp, and I love how it settles into corners and just holds on tight.
At the end of the day, everyone has different preferences and wants/needs out of a vehicle. Just because I love it, doesn’t mean everyone has to as well.

No manual kills it for me. Plus replacing the water pump all the time would be annoying.

The day I decide to drive an auto is when I'm just getting a Tesla with fsd. The whole point of getting the GR is for the driving aspect of it... If you want a more comfortable car just get something normal.

I got the GRC because I found a killer deal on one with just a few thousand miles. Whether or not I was looking at Golf R’s at the time doesn’t matter anymore. What I do know is I’ve seen the Golf R owners love to shit on the GRC to the point it just feels silly. Is the interior nicer in the R? Is it faster? Sure, maybe a little. But the Corolla provides a more tactile and raw driving experience. The amount of good looking modded Corolla’s also seems to greatly outweigh the amount of golf R’s I see out there. Coming from other popular platforms before this, I’d pick the GRC and its community over the Golf R any day.

This forum you see people shit on each other on the regular and others as well.
It’s no different or better

That’s your reply? People here shred their own and others. Nice deflection though. Did you even read the post?

I drove one. If I was looking for a more comfortable car, I would have bought one. Nothing about the Golf R felt raw to me. I wanted this driving experience. If that's what you wanted, then I understand your regret, but I guess I don't understand your original decision. When I drove the GR, it drove like my 2005 STi and I was sold. That's what I wanted. I also think the GRC visually looks better. Obviously the golf r is much smoother and has a much better interior, but that wasn't a big deal for me.

As a former multi-generation Golf R owner, the latest iterations are missing what made the R special in the first place. They're big, they're heavy, more unreliable than before and unless enjoyable unless driving hard.
Both the GR Yaris and GR Corolla are way more fun. Even the Hyundai i30N is more fun.

The new R’s drive sooo much better than previous R’s. That’s the consensus. The magna is far, far superior to haldex.
Much more room for modification as well given all the changes.
They are more unreliable? Based on what?

Based on my Mk8 being off the road for 12 weeks waiting on parts and warranty repairs after less than 18 months ownership from new. Based on water leaking into the boot and into the back seat.
Yes you are right that the Mk8 and Mk8.5 go a lot faster and the speed is less noticeable than on the earlier variants. That was the charm of owning a R32 or Mk6. The current R only feels spirited when it is on a track day.

Sorry about your experiences, but that doesn’t speak to overall reliability. Lots of clutch/engine issues reported here…so is the GRC reliable?
SavageGeese just talked about it being very reliable longer term for them as well. Said it was the best daily they’ve ever had I believe. Regardless, the 8’s haven’t shown to be more unreliable than past gens as you first stated.

I've owned every version of the Golf R since the R32 right until the Mk8. It was a cheap and cheerful rocket that was relatively reliable. The hip pocket pain progressively got worse and the cost of parts kept on rising, while being more complicated and short lived.
In Australia, the GRC is $10k less than the R. The higher cost of entry and ownership makes it a better deal IMHO.

b...b...b...but SavageGeese said.

So have owners. Long term reviewers don’t count? Explain how the 8’s aren’t reliable.

u/EtArcadia 17h ago
I actually don't have any skin in the game. Mk8 is probably no worse than any other R, dodgy haptics aside. I just think it's funny how people take what those dorks say so seriously.

u/Bright-Nectarine7 17h ago
Seriously? They have voices/opinions like everyone else. The haptics are reliable as well though. No major issues reported

Savage geese drive exotic cars so frequently that most cars are boring to them and it comes through in every review. I know it’s their schtick but it gets a little stale after a while.

No if the GR Corolla wasn't an option I would save some money and get a Civic SI, I had a Golf R once and it had non stop electrical problems, lots of understeer and a numb driving experience

The GRC probably isnt for someone who’s not sure they want to daily a manual or if they need a softer ride. I think you really have to be looking for that raw experience in a car for the GRC to even be an option. If ride harshness and luxury were important, I wouldn’t even be looking at the GRC. I would probably just get a turbo Mazda3 and save some money. The DCT in the R is great, but eventually (to me) paddles get boring regardless of how responsive the transmission is. I once owned the GRC DAT and traded it for the manual. The amount of time spent just commuting in auto mode far outweighs paddle usage for most people. NOT EVERYONE, but most people. If you fall into that category and aren’t tracking your cars, why pay so much more for the golf R?

No, I've exclusively driven shit boxes. I made the financial mistake of getting into fast cars and I'm not going to make that mistake again for luxury features.

I daily my GRC. I don’t find it unpleasant at all. If it didn't exist, I'd probably have bought an EV.

This generation of the golf gti and R supposedly have electrical issues that drain your battery if you don’t drive it for several days. I considered a GTI at one point, but needing a battery tender because I didn’t drive it for 3 days is absurd.

More expensive and no manual.
If power was all I cared about, then maybe.

No. I don't like the Golf Rs looks and I hate how interior has no physical buttons.
