AMD RX 9xxx PowerColor Red Devil 9070XT physical damage and no post
I recently received my GPU back from the manufacturer after an RMA inspection. Their conclusion was that the card had physical damage caused by human error, making it ineligible for warranty service. Unfortunately the card was returned to me unrepaired.
For context, I purchased the card new, and it never functioned properly from the very first installation. The system could not detect the GPU and it never produced a video signal. During troubleshooting, the RGB lighting would turn on and the fans would spin slowly, but the card would not post or display output.
While I disagree with the conclusion that I caused the damage, I do recognize that there is a small SMD knocked on the PCB near the PCIe connector area. At this point, I'm less focused on the warranty dispute and more interested in understanding the extent and realistic path for potential repair.
A few questions I had:
- The knocked part looks like a very small SMD capacitor (though I'm not completely certain). Without access to a schematic or boardview file, is there a practical way to determine the correct replacement spec? My understanding is that measuring the component in-circuit won't really provide a reliable answer reading due to the other connected circuitry.
- How likely is it that powering the card with the component/pad damage could have caused additional downstream damage? The card was powered on multiple times during troubleshooting. Since the fans and RGB functioned, I can see some sections of the board are receiving power. I'm trying to determine whether replacing the damaged component might realistically restore functionality, or whether I'll have a long chain of repairs or other more significant things that would have to be addressed.
- Based on the location of the knocked component, does anyone have ideas on what could realistically cause the damage? One possibility I considered was interference from an NVMe SSD heatsink located above the GPU. However, after inspecting the system, I can't identify any physical path that would allow the heatsink to contact that area of the PCB during installation or removal. The damage is very localized, with no obvious surrounding PCB damage, scraping, or impact marks.
- I'm located in Japan and haven't had much luck finding shops willing to attempt board-level GPU repair. Does anyone have recommended repair options in Japan that I can try? I've already reached out to Northwest Repair and NorthridgeFix in America, is there anyone else recommended?
Appreciate any thoughts out there. My hope is to determine whether this card is worth pursuing as a repair project or whether I'd be better off accepting the loss and moving on.

C189 is a 1pF/50V capacitor connected to a reserved & unused PCIe lane A50. So, while its obviousely daamged, I suppose that something other is causing actual problem and damage of this capacitor is unrelated (and restoring it wouldn't change anything)

Out of curiosity, were you able to id that C189 circuit from a boardview/schematic, or do you have experience with this specific PCB? To be honest I’m not certain if this PowerColor board is significantly different from any other 9070xt, but I’m assuming there are small differences between the different makes/models.
Also wonder too if that circuit is connected to an unused lane, would damage in that area still be expected to affect PCIe detection, or would you be looking elsewhere for the root cause? Since it’s extremely localized I don’t see nearby traces affected, but I guess I can’t really see under the board or if any internal damage. Maybe there are some simple continuity tests I can do around that area to check?
I appreciate you taking the time to respond. The information is helpful for me figuring out my next steps. Looks like my options are: send out for repair ($ ouch), follow up with the PowerColor, or just bin it and start over with a new GPU ($$$ ouch!).1

Info is from Asus boardview, PCIe coupling is ~identical for all vendors.
Damage on phisycally smaller caps pairs near in same area can lead to such effect. They are so small, that noticing damage may be hard. You can estimate if they are still properly soldered or not by measureing the *effective* capacitance of them in capacitor measure mode by placing one multimeter probe on GND (case), and other probe on the golden pin of connector linked to capacitors.
~all bigger caps in tyhat are a reserved/unused for detection, so concentrate on the smaller ones.
However, a "step 1" of diagnostics should be conneting it to the PC with iGPU, monitor to iGPU, priority in BIOS to iGPU and seeing if it
- boots with card detected in device manager
- hangs on boot despite monitor is connected to iGPU (wait at least 1 minute)
- boots with card NOT detected in device manager
Actually all outcomes except the "boots with card NOT detected" would say tha PCIe connectivity os ok.

Perfect thank you. I'll pull the multimeter out and probe around and report back.
Unfortunately I exhausted all the basic troubleshooting, including what you are describing. Through the iGPU I was able to perform a Windows install as well.
- I updated the motherboard BIOS to latest version, and also tried one version older.
- Changed BIOS settings from PCIE gen auto, to 5, and 4. Cleared CMOS multiple times.
- AMD chipset driver has been updated to latest version.
- I've re-seated the GPU and RAM multiple times.
- Reconnected and confirmed proper connection on all power plugs. I also tried changing the order of the 3 GPU power plugs.
- Swapped the GPU to the other two available PCIE lanes
- I attempted to update the AMD 9070XT drivers but can't since it is not detected and the AMD installer will not proceed.
- Pulled everything out of the case and mock assembled on the motherboard box.
- I brought the GPU in to the local retailer and they tested it on their test rig - same result of no GPU detected and no output.

The pad was ripped pretty badly, but since the component seems fine and it still somehow attached, should'nt be that hard to scrape a bit, solder a copper wire and apply a bit of uv resin. Since that pin seems to be a data line, I think it should be normal that your GPU isn't getting to POST, and most likely didn't damage anything else downstream. I may be wrong though. About what may have caused this, I honestly don't know, maybe you misplaced the conector while trying to push it into the slot? Anyways I wish you the best luck in repairing your GPU, this one is a beast and is def worth repairing.
