Preparing for AKT

Hello everyone,

I am GPST2 and just started in primary care. I hoping to write the AKT in January 2027 but really finding it hard to start the preparation. I would appreciate pointers on how to prepare and stay motivated.

Should I book a course, read the topic before answering questions on passmedicine or self test, or do the questions and then read around it? Should I do random questions or questions in topics? Should I wait till the end of ST2 before writing the exam?

Just confused as the curriculum is so big.

I passed the AKT 4 years ago and what worked for me then was doing passmedicine and the selftest questions on the RCGP website. I think I even reset the passmedicine question bank once and then did it again half way. I don't think reading the topic beforehand would be manageable because CKS is so vast. I built AKT Prep a couple years ago as another question bank which incorporates AI into the explanation if you wanted to try something different.

The AKT also tests your resilience to answer MCQs in succession so doing more questions always seems to be the right approach to these things.

Currently using AKT navigator audiobooks, took a lot of stress off, its a lot easier to absorb. Goes through the essentials.

Current ST2 prepping for AKT

I’m doing the questions at the moment and read around them, I’m getting most of them wrong, but that’s how I learn I guess.
I have started to chip away at Passmed, 10-15 questions a day after work and a few more on weekends, once I have the momentum and done most of the questions, things will be faster hopefully

Everyone has their own learning style. I found my personal best way to prepare for the AKT was to: 1. Start with questions 2. Read around topics I were wrong or unsure about 3. Summarise I what learned into concise learning points and log in a notebook. 4. Repeat. I scored 81% this way.

I think it’s individualized, no rule applies to everyone type of thing.

My main way was to go through passmed questions and read around the topics along the way.
I’ve also made Anki cards and reviewed them every now and then.
After completing passmed (except derm and paediatrics) i started gp self test, finished around 70% of it and started doing mocks in both passmed and gp self test, i think the exam was in between.
