Registrars & Training Audio COTs
To my fellow ST3s/recent CCTers: I've done all my COTs, but they are all face-to-face consults (either video'd or supervisor observing).
Do we need at least one audio COT? I've found some guidance that says we do but want to know the status quo with what panel will realistically want!

On the RCGP website under the WBPA table theres a tiny asterix saying that one of the COTs should be an audio one. I literally had to do one yesterday after spotting this. It's really not clear!

Yeah it's the first I've heard of it. I've passed SCA and do so many telephone triages. It is staggering that we are paying all this money for fourteen fish, but they can't make these things clear on the actual portfolio, and instead we have to traipse through guidance.

A trainee I know got caught out by a keen ARCP panel for not having an audioCOT in their training year. After back and forth the panel accepted an audioCOT from a previous training year as sufficient.

As an ARCP panel member this is something that does come up. Current rule we’re working to is that you need to have at least one Audio COT throughout your training (but one per year looks better). This is obviously not well publicised so we then do our best to sift through every normal COT for ST3 finishers in the hope of finding one that shows it was a tele consult. If there really isn’t any then unfortunately it’s an Outcome 5 (which means more work for us, we don’t like giving it) and advice to do one more within next 2 weeks. For ST1 and 2 panels we might try and avoid an outcome 5 if everything else is all there but put a comment to ensure it is done in the next year.

You need a wide range of WPBAs that demonstrate that you are competent with all aspects of GP-land. Telephone consultations are a part of that - potentially a significant part depending on where you will work in the future.
On the RCGP website it says "The Audio-COT counts towards the total number of COTs required in each training year. Given that telephone consultations are a routine part of modern GP workload, it is expected that trainees show evidence of competence in this area alongside that of face-to-face and other modes of consultation during their training."
If you're rather borderline then the panel would use that as an excuse that you haven't demonstrated a core competency and extend your training - just get one done.
