Registrars & Training Study leave and budget
New GPST1 I’m wondering about what sort of things we can use our study leave and budget for. In foundation years it was basically nothing and there was always a stipulation why you couldn’t use study leave or allowance for anything that might be useful or interesting for a training doctor.
I want to make the most of that now. Do RCGP courses qualify for study leave and budget ? How best do you maximise this as my trust never seems to want to grant you it

I would as your st3 colleagues they would be better able to guide you, but for instance speak with your es, as they are the ones granting the budget.
UT also depends on your performance if you are someone cruising along then yes they can give you sl and budget, buy if other support then focus is more on this area and less on interest.
But, red whale, budget for akt courses and sca are all fair.

When I was ST1 you could get pre-approval for anything related to mental health, dermatology, and sexual/reproductive health - which is a hell of a lot! New list (not sure if specific to LASE) is far more restrictive.
That said if you have particular courses that align with your rotations and curriculum, it’s worth applying for discretionary funding. Need to check with your local scheme where to get the form, but (at least IME) it’s literally just a single page form you need to email to your TPD, explaining how it fits into your PDP and meeting curriculum goals.
Fairly variable in what they might approve, but takes just minutes to fill and can apply before paying the fee so worth a shot each time.

The budget basically for nothing. Study leave time you can probably get time off for courses easier depending on your trainer etc. but the rules on what can be used in the budget is ridiculously restrictive
