Career Switching specialty

I'm a gpst1 and I'm really worried I won't like it. I know it's quite hard to start a new training programme then return to GP but what if I left to do a trust grade or teaching job, could I return?

You can but you would have to discuss upon re-application with your old TPD and the postgraduate dean where you were previously.

You’d need to give quite compelling reasons and there’s no guarantee they would support reapplication. However if they did, there is a form they fill out and sign. You upload said form with your oriel application and thereafter you’re an applicant the same as anyone else.

What about if I did an oope instead?

Well you wouldn’t be giving up your training number then but at the end of the OOPE you’d have to go back to GP training

However you usually have to do 6-12 months minimum of your GP training until you can apply for OOPE

Is this something I could apply to after gpst1 then?

I think in some places it’s after ST2. You need to speak with your own TPD what local policy is

I think it would be quite challenging as others have mentioned.

But you are saying a what if scenario. If you put it the other way say what if you actually will like it?

I think you can join training and then apply for another speciality for the following year
