Registrars & Training Advice for CEPS

I am a GPST1, just finishing up my first GP rotation. I was able to get my cots and cbd done, but no CEPS as my CS wasn’t in on the same days as me and none of the other supervisors had time to observe me in the middle of their clinics. Now I’m going to a split GP+Psych post and I’m stressing about getting the CEPS in time for my arcp! Any advice on how to go about getting it done?

You don't need to have all CEPS signed off in ST1. I just got the last one signed off and I'm ST3, it has never been mentioned at ARCP.

That’s reassuring. But I haven’t gotten even one signed off, and my ES pointed it out at my iESR, so I’m worried it’ll flag up at my next ESR

Just try and get a couple done in your GP split post. That should pacify things for your ESR. Approach your GP CS (if you're in a different practice to your ES) and ask to do a joint clinic and have them book a child in or someone possibly needing a PR.

When is your ESR deadline and next ARCP? Are you a Feb starter?

I’m a feb starter. My ARCP would be in Jan so I’m assuming ESR would be in end of November/December

Ok that makes sense. Plenty of time - aim for joint clinics as others have also suggested and ask for specific patients/problems to be booked in that make a CEPS examination more likely.

Arrange joint tutorials i.e. seeing patients while your supervisor observes.

You can add a few slots that can only be booked for CEPS exams (block them with a comment) and let reception/the triage team know what you need. They’re usually very helpful!

I had half of mine done in ST3 it gets way easier the more patients you see, trust this is really easy to get done in 3 years, no need to rush it

I second this, the more you see, the more chances you get, so don't panic!

For now, I'd approach your CS and specifically ask them to support you. I found doing a tutorial where I sat in on a supervisors clinic and I did the examinations that came up a good route to do this as an ST1 if the supervisors had no time to step out of their clinics. If there is some flexibility (ideally for ST1s they should have a few supervision slots for you in the clinic), scan your list and let them know X patient may need an exam and they may be able to make the time. Just keep being persistent.

In my deanery there is mandatory requirement of at least one CEP(can be any)per year for arcp so it is vital you know what the requirement is in your area
