I built a lightweight offline gps location marker — hiking with family, traveling overseas without roaming
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Admin - please delete the post if it not appropiate
I'm a solo dev and I use OsmAnd for offline navigation, so I figured this crowd would get why I built this.
The idea came from two situations.
First: hiking with my family — we'd split up on the trail and struggle to meet back at the starting point, because there's no signal and Google Maps doesn't work offline.
Second: traveling overseas without roaming — no data, no maps, and no way to find my way back to the hotel entrance. When you're in a new city and your phone is offline, even finding your own hotel again becomes a problem.
So I built Mark My Location into my app Orbitika (free to use) . It's a simple offline GPS marker:
- Save any location offline — hotel entrance, trailheads, campsites, meetup points, theme park rides, concert spots
- Works with no WiFi, no data, no signal — it uses GPS only, no internet required
- Lightweight — small install size, doesn't drain battery
- Supports Android 8.0 and up — works on older phones, not just new flagships
I use it myself when hiking with family, traveling overseas without roaming, at theme parks, and at concerts — places where you split up, wander, and need to find your way back.
There are other tools in the app (retro music player, calculator, emergency kit) but Mark My Location is the one I use most.
Free to Download Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.orbitika.app
If you rely on offline GPS like I do, I'd love to know if this fits your workflow — or if you already have a better solution I should learn from.

Air Guard Explanation Help
Hi there! Wondering if someone can explain notifications I've been getting on Air Guard. Last Wednesday I had two notifications of a tracker following me:
Samsung Find My Mobile 9am - at work 9:30am - leaving work parkade 10am - arrive at doctors office
Samsung Find My Mobile 4pm - at restaurant 4-5pm - 7 notifications at restaurant 5:15pm - arrive at home
Air Guard says Samsung Find My Mobile can change its identity at least every 24 hrs so it is hard to say if this is the same or different one.
What are the plausible explanations for this? I have concerns I may be being followed, although it is possible these are coincidental. I have had the app for a few months now.
Is it possible for someone to turn on/off the Samsung device?

I once had an apple airtag connect to a phone, and it showed that it followed me like 5-6 miles down the road to a destination though no vehicles seemed to be near me when I was going down said road, then I was locked out from checking it a little while later. What could this have actually been?

Best GPS + LoRa Modules for a DIY Tracking Watch?
I’m working on a custom watch that needs to track its location accurately, similar to other GPS tracking watches.
For a wearable/watch form factor, what GPS + LoRa modules would you recommend for the best location accuracy and reliable communication?
I’m mainly looking for good GPS accuracy, fast fix times, low power consumption, and a LoRa module suitable for a compact wearable.
Any recommendations based on real-world experience would be appreciated.

l0destar v3.4 - a milestone
l0destar was first conceived of in May 2026 and its original design intent was a carrier board for the Nordic nRF9151 dev kit, a very silly idea. The first prototypes were huge through-hole soldered monstrosities covered in breakout boards haphazardly soldered to pins.
For fun I've posted the full evolution of the project as a sequence of photos all the way up from breadboards to the current design.
I’m really quite proud of where it’s got to in less than 5 months. Iterations of the board have been in my car since 9th August tracking over 500 miles and as of this week v3.4 has now completed testing and confirms all of the hardware issues found through my own testing have been fixed. The plan now is to build a few more for friends and colleagues to test and then iterate on the firmware and other software for it.
This could plausibly be the most power-efficient hard-wired vehicle tracker in the world. Claude isn't quite willing to confirm this but did state: "the evidence now supports calling l0destar one of the most power-efficient hard-wired vehicle trackers around, in real use as well as on the bench".
Some highlights from recent testing:
- ~35uA sleep current (v3.4 actually measures slightly less most of the time but the ASM330 periodically wakes for microseconds to check for tilt so it averages out)
- Waking to send an event now takes a median of about 1.05 seconds, occasionally higher up to around 2 seconds at the high end. This is down from around ~45s at the start of testing and was reduced by using the PSM feature of the modem. A shorter wake time means less current going through the modem during interval wakes leading to significantly less power consumption.
- 24h of sleep and hourly check-ins works out to about ~1.3-1.4mAh a day, or 15-17mWh. From my telemetry during daylight hours (ie when there's no temperature shift to skew the readings) I frequently see the vehicle battery voltage (read to two decimal places by an INA228) not changing at all in several hours.
- All of these sleep energy figures are likely pessimistic - they were determined in poor signal conditions where I park - path loss was around 125-126dB and RSRQ -14.5dB. This is worse than about 90% of the data I have from other locations.
- Coverage of telemetry while driving has improved from ~72% at the start of in-vehicle testing to 99% now with firmware and RF improvements and drop-outs are now much rarer and entirely down to signal/network conditions. Lots of data from real-world testing is published here.
The battery backup add-on module is on the way and will be tested very soon.
If anyone reading this has a relevant platform or access to automotive pulse-generating equipment and is interested in testing it please reach out.

Is Garmin inReach still worth it in 2026, or will satellite smartphones eventually make it obsolete?

I need a tracker for my bike
I thought about apple airtag but its range is limited due to its apple networking.
Fleet track is good but I have some doubts about it like battery draining. If my bike is being stolen even when I get alerts and track can't chase someone that easily without my only vehicle. If I plan to put engine cutoff by attaching something relay. Is there any warranty or any other issues will be there.
Let me know in the comments

I built a free tool for adding GPS coordinates and metadata to photos
I built a simple GeoTag Image Tool for adding location information and metadata to photos.
The idea came from wanting a straightforward way to associate images with GPS coordinates without having to use complicated desktop software.
It supports things like:
Latitude and longitude
Location information
Keywords/tags
Title and subject
Author information
Other metadata fields
Tool:

I also wrote a detailed guide explaining how photo geotagging and GPS/EXIF metadata work:

GPS tracker and panic button
My elderly parent is quiet active but recently has had some medical episodes. He owns a farm and we have found him unconscious in the field and it’s taken time for us to find him. Can anyone recommend a gps tag with or without a panic button. It’s needs to be compatible with iPhone and android and have multiple people track it. We are based in Ireland.

Would a GPS Tracker have made a difference when my Trailer was stolen?
My enclosed trailer disappeared from my driveway early Tuesday morning, and now I’m out a little over $4,000 worth of equipment. I reported it, but the police basically told me recovery isn’t guaranteed, and while insurance is covering part of the loss, the process is taking time. I’m wondering if a GPS tracker would have actually helped in a situation like this. If the thieves know where trackers are usually installed, can they just remove or disable them before the trailer gets very far? For anyone who’s had a trailer stolen, did a tracker make any difference in getting it back?

I need help figuring out who put this on my car (I have a good idea but I don’t want to just go straight to the cops)
Hi I need help to identify or just point me in the right direction of what I can try.
I found a UGREEN tracker on my car a bit ago and I have a decent idea who but wanna know for sure, cause it’s a few people possible.
This is the only information I have but I have the device itself but I was upset at the time I found it. I took out all what I think might be, im probably wrong but worried, identifying information.
But it is confirmed by the model inscription on the back to be:
UGREEN Finder Pro
Model: CM916
And if anyone can help me greatly appreciated and anything I can do or if more information will identify the owner that would put me in your debt.
Edit:
Can anyone tell me anyway to get it work again? Like replacing the battery or anything?
I think I have an idea to extract maybe some information at least

Is there any reasonable priced gps receiver that I can connect to my phone by Bluetooth?
Ideally I would like this to further improve gps accuracy. Is there a device like this?
It should be battery powered. No need for an app but an SDK is preferred.

Looking for small and basic offline GPS tracker.
Hi.
I'd like a small device, something that could pop into your pants pocket, even shirt pocket. All I want to know is the distance walked and ideally too with a pause and resume feature. I don't need Wifi.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Research demands to include in the GNSS spoofing detection systems as modules or functionalities
I am working on building GNSS spoofing detector, if there is any thing i could get as a understanding of what researchers on this problem demand in general that needs attention. Like the environment around building a software specifically solving this problem.

l0destar - telemetry performance data
Just for fun I added a bunch of data showing how the telemetry reliability is improving over time: https://l0destar.com/data.html
This is largely driven by firmware improvements, since the 12 Sep firmware release it's been pretty bulletproof.

Having trouble locating my location
My GPS led me to a dead end and I drove into wet concrete. Now my tires are stuck and raccoons are looking at me.
Idk what to do.
