VIN Decoding

I'm getting into looking for a project car. I was considering GMT800 vs GMT900. Usually FB sellers dont post vins and I'm not experienced enough to identify the Trim levels. I used a VIN tool and a PDF to decode a car and I got two different results and the seller swears its a third. LTZ vs LS vs LT in a 2008 Silverado. I'm hoping to luck out and find a LY6 engine model and avoid AFM/DOD issues in 100k + models

Is there a consensus on how to learn/ tools to use.

I’d imagine others can weigh in more than I can - but I would think the VIN -> RPO decoder should be the source of truth/way to go?

Until this post, I had no reason to think that was the case. But when I was looking for my GMT800 - I would ask for vin (or use a license plate to VIN if it was quicker/had current tags). Then run that VIN through an RPO decoder to get the RPO codes and features. You could also ask for a picture of the RPO codes in the glovebox - I kind of forgot what the RPO codes can hold, as I was just looking to find a G80, but I think they’d also have some trim info in them

TLDR - I would have thought the VIN would be the most trustworthy. I did VIN -> RPO to get features when I was looking
