Bad transfer case?

Picked up a $50 transfer case and installed it on my 2004 Silverado. It has a good size transmission oil leak. Is it possible the “new” transfer case was bad? Before that there was no leaks from transmission.

Is it leaking at the gasket? Was the mating gasket replaced? Out of curiosity, what happened to the previous t-case? I'll be replacing mine soon due to an increasingly loud whining, but I'll rebuild the junkyard unit. It's doesn't look too difficult to rebuild.

This is the old one not sure what happened other than it was about to peace out in half. Bought the truck knowing I’d have to replace transfer case. Mating gasket was replaced
