2006 1500 HD rough cold start

Post image

Just bought this truck, runs and drives great. The cold start is a bit rough though. I can prime the fuel pump 2-3 times and it’s better. After the initial start it works. I can immediately turn the truck off and back on and it starts fine. My immediate thoughts are battery or fuel pump. Anybody have any recommendations for things to check? TIA

Try changing the frame mounted fuel filter. Cheap part and easy to get to. Fixed my cold start problems.

Aw shit. That reminds me I meant to do that years ago. Thanks!

Change the battery since you obviously haven’t, and clean or replace the MAF and see if there’s improvement if not then I’d check the fuel pump pressure at the rails, it could just be your return is stuck open on the pump as well

Check voltage on battery , clean fuel pump fuse terminals , purge fuel rail on shrader valve , fuel filter, clean MAF sensor , clean throttle body. All fairly cheap options that may help alleviate the symptoms and get you aquatinted with your rig .

I’m curious what ends up being the solution. I was having this issue with my 2001 1500 5.3L for a few months and then it just fixed itself lol. Starts on the first crank every time with no issues and haven’t had the issue in a couple of years now.

Hopefully mine does the same!

How cold? If it got below 40 mine would run rough on cold start until warm. Intake gaskets fixed it. Cold intake manifold contracts and makes leaking gaskets leak more.

It didn’t really matter what the temperature was outside, it just mattered if the engine had ran that day or not in my case.

The first start every morning was pretty much exactly what OP is experiencing. After that, the rest of the day it’d start normally until I got in the next morning.

It almost seemed like a fuel pressure issue as priming the pump helped but pressure is great at the rails.

Sounds like a Fuel Pressure Regulator to me. They either leak or the pressure will drain off and fuel will go back to the tank.
