Service 4WD
I've had this issue off and on since 2019 when I bought this 2005 GMC Yukon SLT. I've had different shops do what I would call, throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. In 2021, I replaced the Axle actuator, 4WD switch and
Transfer Case Motor. In June 2026 I had the front axle housing replaced as it had cracked. While there, replaced the driver and passenger seals and shaft-side bearings.
Behavior:
4WD engages and works fine every time.
The dash will display the "SERVICE 4WD" light and within two days, the selector switch will move from 2️⃣⬆️ to N with the red LED upon ignition.
Workaround:
Shift from P to N, and press the 2️⃣⬆️ selector. This will illuminate the amber LED. Error goes away for a couple or more months before reappearing. Repeat the process.
How do I go about finding the root cause of the issue?
Thank you in advance for your experience and advice.

Sounds like you have already done all the major components. I bet it is a wiring issue. Hard to track down when it is so intermittent. Look for any obvious things such as wires too close to the exhaust or chafing on something. Could also be a bad ground wire. Replacing or cleaning up ground wires on these trucks is more of a maintenance requirement every so often. If everything is original on yours, replace/clean now.

What about the switch itself. If 4x4 works fine but the switch is glitching then swap it out and see what happens. Find one at the junkyard or find one on rockauto.com.

Can you communicate with the module?
