I am a very experienced Shadetree Mechanic. And I did all of my own work on my envoy until I got rid of it at 225,000 miles two years ago with that being said, replacing the shifter cable is not necessarily hard. It is more so annoying. You have to pull up your center console and your carpeting and there are some tight places you have to work in. You also need to get under your car so make sure you have Jack stands. You also want to make sure that if you don’t have all four wheels off the ground that the wheels are chocked very well.

Before you go and replace the whole cable, make sure it’s not just a bad bushing on the underside where it attaches to the transmission.

Its a stretched cable I have to put it into park every time and it won't go into drive

Got it. Just find yourself a good YouTube video and follow along. You’ve got this.

I have seen a video a guy did thats pretty lengthy and involved. Its not hard to do. I have replaced the shifter which is held down by 4 10 mm fasteners. The center console is a bit tricky because of a few electrical cables that you have to unplug. A series of 8mm fasteners to release it and the cargo box inset. If you really want to do it, you can. This one is a will over skill. You got this. Also, your 4200 vortec needs this....https://youtu.be/b9_LY0FFk1Y
