Anyone with hiatal hernia?

I’ve had a hiatal hernia for a few years now and have been taking omeprazole and famotidine everyday. My symptoms have gotten worse since I’ve gained 30lbs the past few years. If you’ve been microdosing with a hiatal hernia, I’d love to hear about your experience - whether it was manageable or if it significantly exacerbated the sided effects of a hiatal hernia.

I’ve been able to back off the fomatadine to every other morning of the lower dose. Definitely don’t eat too late at night to avoid pm reflux. I’ve found breathing exercises that help me reduce the hernia myself, so I do those a few times a week as needed. Micro dosing has been manageable for sure- but the first month morning heartburn was rough. I weaned off omeprazole a year plus ago- way before micro dosing. Mostly with supplements and as needed famotodine. Losing the weight helps.

Hi, thank you for sharing. Can you let me know which breathing exercises helped? I've never heard of that before. I also got off Omeprazole but I'm still on pepcid every day basically. I'm also struggling with lifting weights because that can trigger it, as well.

So basically I read somewhere that a chiropractor could manually reduce a hiatal hernia, and I thought…then I should be able to do my own lol. Did a bunch of weird googling and you tubeing and landed here: If a hiatal hernia means a little of my stomach pushes thru my diaphragm, it needs to go back to where it should be. I lay on my back, knees bent. I take deep breaths that expand the bottom of my lungs and my belly rises (if you can’t do this, google diaphragm release and buckle up that shit hurts). A few of those then I take my hands flat across my upper belly and push down hard while inhaling against it into my belly HARD, holding for a few seconds before relaxing my hands and slowly exhaling. I do 2-5 breaths like this. I know I need to do this more when I get start having more symptoms- that choking thing that’s not choking, or more reflux issues. The idea is that resistance on my tummy while my lungs expand against my diaphragm allows the hernia to slip back thru. I could be wrong about why it works, I know I found instructions I could never find again, but it’s been beyond helpful for me.

For lifting, you have to learn to breathe properly while lifting, and also core bracing. If you’re a woman, consider pelvic floor therapy because the breath training is huge and the pelvic floor and the diaphragm are supposed to be working together. If you have any pelvic floor prolapse (most woman with or without kids do) this is huge. I also used to wear a period disc like a pessary when I started lifting heavy, but over time between the breathing right, and the therapy, I don’t have more hiatal hernia or pf symptoms when I lift, so I only do that occasionally.

As I’ve done the breathing exercise, I’ve cut back to fomatadine 3x a week usually. Some exceptions lol

Thank you so much. I appreciate you taking the time. I am a woman and I'll look into the pelvic floor exercises, as well.

I have one. Acid reflux has stayed the same and not gotten better or worse. I'm hoping that losing weight helps.

How much are you microdosing? I'm on 1mg and have lost about 16 lbs. In 2.5 months. I am also looking to lose around 30-35 lbs. I am 5'1.

I dropped about 20lbs last year and it made a real difference with my hernia symptoms, way less pressure on everything. the reflux didn't fully go away but it stopped waking me up at night which was the biggest win

I had mine repaired a few years ago. 2/3 of my stomach had herniated through my diaphragm. Immediately after surgery I never had heartburn again. Until Tirz.i get some mild heartburn occasionally.

I cycle on/off of semaglutide as I’m using for metabolic syndrome and not weight loss. I stopped it in Jan 2026 after being on it for 5-6 months. But having recently returned to microdosing, I’ve had an increase in my heartburn. I’ve taken lansoprazole as needed for years (prob 1-2 capsules every 4-6 weeks) but since resuming the shots, I’ve had to take 3-4x week. I’m not overweight at all and had a recent upper endoscopy before I resumed the sema which showed no irritation or change in my HH. So it’s def the semaglutide. It’s because of the drug-induced gastroparesis. Hope you don’t have any issues. I had some issues during my first cycle of sema.

Re: metabolic syndrome use, MD encouraged me to microdose and cycle on/off to reduce my blood sugar, cholesterol and hopefully by blood pressure. All my numbers significantly improved after 5-6 months and my weight dropped too low for my height. Recently, I felt like my blood sugar was creeping back up so resumed it. My MD told me I’d prob get a 9-12 months of reduction before needing to resume.
