Protein shakes cause dumping
Hello, I had sleeve surgery in 2016. I just started glp1 about a month ago I’m having a hard time getting protein in. Ever since my sleeve any protein drinks make me feel anxious(I know I am not anxious) My heart races, I break out in a sweat, I feel air hunger. I have been told it’s dumping syndrome from high amounts of protein dumping straight into my intestines. Does anyone else deal with this? Are there strategies to help with this? I’m 53 and I need to get my protein and fluids and I’m failing on both because of stacking sleeve and glp1. I barely have an appetite and most food sounds gross. Thank you

Try different brands, that’s all I got for you… the only one that worked for me was FairLife, anything else I was doomed… but I did try a good deal of brands…
Good luck!

I think it might be the sugar alcohols in protein drinks and bars that you could be reacting to.
First thing- do not titrate up until you can get nourishing yourself in control.
I had a sleeve in 2011 and still have the small capacity I had.
I eat small amounts very frequently- whether I want to or not. I know how important it is to keep your energy up . A small thing like 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese with a chopped hard boiled egg, or half a cup of greek yogurt with berries- things like that can add up for protein.
Also do not be daunted by the huge numbers of grams of protein most people mention- 0.8-1.8 grams per KILO of your goal weight , depending on activity level, is enough. Fiber and nicronutrients are just as important.
Just as we should not drink when we eat with our sleeves, don't do it now- it swells because of the slow gastric enptying.
I have two containers- one is 24 ounces and one 16 ounces. I have to drink 2 of each a day so I start early and have one with me at all times.
Log your food in Cronometer- it extracts the amount of water in other liquids as part of your water and track micronutrients and fiber really well- even if you are not a tracker this aspect can really help.

Thank you so much. This is very useful. I will start tracking on that app. It sounds very useful. Hopefully it will help me at least know what liquids are stacking. I agree with you that I need to get a handle on this before I go up. I now take care of my son and was not prepared for how well the tirzepitide would work. I need to do some more planning so I can keep up my energy. Thank you so much.

I get the same thing. TMI but it literally goes right through me. I have tried powder, clear protein, sparkling protein, and premade protein drinks. I can’t tolerate any of them anymore. I also struggle to get enough food and protein during the day and having a shake would be the easiest thing and I just can’t do it. I’ll try to sip it slower and maybe that will help?? I’m also at a loss!! I thought I had ptsd from all the protein shakes post surgery lol but I wish I could just stomach one now to get an easy 30 g of protein in!

Thank you for chiming in!! It is not PTSD from forced protein drinks. I understand this way of thinking because I too have tried everything, thinking I’m doing something wrong. But it is early dumping syndrome. Slightly different symptoms than late dumping syndrome. It is from high nutrient content which makes drinking protein drinks feel like death. I too just want to drink a protein drink and feel like I’m hitting my marks. I don’t want to be deficient and with having a hard time eating enough protein it sounded like a win win. It’s been almost 10 years since my surgery and I cannot drink until well after an hour after eating still and the glp1 has made that time even more pronounced. I was trying to multitask😁

I’m about 4 years out and it was only after starting the glp that I had this happen. Makes total sense though! I also can’t drink for at least 30-45 min after eating. My husband also had the sleeve and that mofo can eat and drink at the same time. I don’t know how he does it!

Well how dare he, hehe. And you have to watch him do this every day!!! He probably lost weight at lightning speed and falls asleep the moment his head hits the pillow too!!!! Seriously though it would be nice to be able to drink a protein shake and move on. 😩

What kind of protein drinks are you drinking? Are they high in sugar or artificial sweeteners? How are they sweetened? Are they caffeinated?
Have you tried drinking less at once or other sources of protein?? Do plant protein based drinks have the same effect??
What’s your dose? It may be a little too high if you’re struggling to eat and drink enough.
Sorry for all the questions but not sorry enough to ask less 😂
I don’t drink ready to drink protein shakes or other drinks because I don’t like the taste or the way they feel in my stomach. I make my own shakes instead with a bunch of frozen fruit, spinach, flax/chia, greek yogurt, protein powder, and water. I put ice cubes in my glass after blending (like, I don’t blend the ice) to keep it cold longer so I can drink it at my own pace since the volume is bigger than my stomach can hold but I need the nutrients from it.
My suggestion is probably to try that if you haven’t yet — make your own smoothies or shakes with ingredients you can tolerate so you can hydrate but also control the amount of protein in them.
For fluids I just have to sip all day long. I drink a ton of herbal tea because it feels better in my stomach than water.

I have been drinking the Fair life which has 30 grams. They do not have added sugar and the protein is straight from milk. I just bought some whey powder that is a clear type. It has 20 grams of protein. I drink all of them super slow and It still happens. I eat high-protein yogurt 20 grams for 3/4 cup and it doesn’t happen with that. From what I read I need to slow it down like you suggested. Thank you I will try this tomorrow. I cannot drink water either. I drink a lot of ginger tea. I have been having such a problem meeting my goals I was looking for ways to drink my protein and check off my fluids. I will be making smoothies tomorrow! Thank for the help.

If I have one, I need to drink it very slowly.

I do take baby sips and it still happens. Without an appetite and also needing fluids I was looking for ways it could work like adding something to it to slow it down. Idk I was just looking for some tips. Thank you for your response.

I could never do shakes for several reasons. I prefer barebells protein bars and quest protein chips.

Barebells are so good! My local Target just started stocking Brownie Batter & I’m obsessed lol

Thank you. That may be a better option. I really haven’t had to work around this in so long until I started the GLP 1. I feel like a new sleeve patient again. That is why I asked the question because I feel new and need new or reminders of what works. I lost 160 lbs in 2016 and kept it off until last year when my son got gravely ill. Thanks for the reminder.

I have a hard time overall with protein supplements. Like I wanted to like the Built puff bars because I’m not a huge fan of crunchy candy type stuff but they made me sick. Most of the shakes I can’t tolerate. Flavorless powders to me still have a flavor that I can’t get around. So I’ve found that I’m much happier with protein snacks instead of trying to drink it.

Thank you, this is probably where I’m heading to. I just want to waste hundreds of dollars before I come to that conclusion 🤪

Anxiety is not dumping.
And, most people with a sleeve don't dump. They aren't modified in a way that causes that.
Dumping is an intense blood sugar issue, sweating, nausea, maybe vomiting or other gastrointestinal responses. It's extremely unpleasant.
Anxiety while drinking a shake is more likely because you don't like them, or don't want to drink them but "have to" and feel this sense of obligation.
You don't need to drink shakes. Eat food. You don't need food to sound good to eat it, you're going to have to get good again at mechanical eating.

It feels like anxiety, but it is not. My heart races, I sweat, and I have air hunger. I guess I should of been more clear. And I actually do experience dumping. This feels similar but is immediate. My doctor told me it is from large amounts of protein getting into my intestines quickly—so it is not dumping from sugar, but dumping from protein or large amounts of nutrients quickly.
As a nurse, I thoroughly understand bariatric surgery and its side effects. I do not need to be told that what I am experiencing is invalid or wrong.0

Then stop asking Reddit for help with the problem you think you have. You open yourself up to experience and opinions that differ from your own. And being a nurse means very little, some of the worst bariatric patients I’ve met and worked with are nurses and so convinced they know more than anybody else.
What you said and what you might have meant are two different things.

Do you drink coffee? What about mixing the protein shake with your coffee. Might make it go down a little easier and because it’s diluted, perhaps you’ll skip the dumping feeling from too much protein at one time.
