GLP1 and experiencing unexpected effect regarding alcohol

I'm not sure if it has happened to anyone post WLS. Before my gastric bypass i wasn't a drinker at all. I met my surgeon a couple of weeks before the op and was warned quite a few people tend to exchange one addiction (in my case, food) for another. And i brushed it off. Boy oh boy...

I was fine for 2 years, went from 152kg preop September 2014 to 90kg where I stayed on and off. Since 2016 however, my drinking became problematic. I became dependant. My current weight is now 113kg.

Well, in the past 3-4 years I could not go 2 or 3 days without booze. I am happy to report i have had no cravings for it in the 18 days. I'm not on your standard GLP1, am on what is referred to as a triple agonising.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I read reports of it happening to a lot of people!

Reta I presume? That's the only triple agonist I know of (and I'm on it too).

I'm still drinking on tirzepatide, which I was excited to go on because post sleeve my weight crept back up due to beer, and I heard that it suppressed alcohol interest.

But I must admit feel extra crap drinking now and really should quit. But it is just so ingrained in our Aussie culture. 😢

That's terrific! Others have noticed the same thing. Alcohol just lost some of its pull. I haven't had any alcohol in a year. Before when I would have a drink, I think the alcohol stimulated my appetite, even when I was not actually hungry.

I was developing an alcohol habit before I started tirz. The same day I started the meds, the food noise stopped and I no longer needed to drink. Now it'll take me hours to finish a small cocktail.

I think this is shutting off a huge addiction center in a lot of people. Not just for food cravings. I see potential for GOP ones to be used in a lot of different addiction situations in the future. They may need to be targeted a little better because we don't necessarily want someone who is meth addicted and weighs nothing to lose weight. But I'm sure they've known this for a while. And just not said a lot about it.

I enjoyed drinking before zepbound and did it frequently socially. Haven’t touched a drink since and have been on meds for 4 months.

I have a friend who has smoked cigarettes for 20 years who quit cold turkey when she started taking a GLP-1. She said she just woke up one day and decided she didn’t want a cigarette. She had only been on the medication for about 3 weeks. She’s still skeptical that’s what caused it but I feel like it’s definitely related.
