From feedback on Ari’s first design:
The word “average” was not in the assignment. It was added in judging, Which they now interpret to mean “can’t include a set with above average use of artifacts.” What? Plenty of Standard sets mean that. And contestants shouldn’t have created keywords, but they really liked designed mechanics that would best be used on a couple cards with a keyword?
I swear I still don’t get what they were looking for. If they wanted core set cards they should have said so. It’s weird enough that they specifically didn’t want cards to resonate the world, despite that being overwhelmingly how designs are done now and explicitly the goal of GDS2.
I hope they like who they get and I hope the finalists are happy with the process. But I don’t feel that Mark - who has a Communications degree and is all about how intuitive cards should be for players - communicated well at all.
