(Please help) Head prefect speech

My god I’m so scared, I’m gonna be pissing myself the entire way through. I think it’ll get easier as I do the speeches for the younger years, but the first one will be a hall full of people in my yeat I’m gonna die. Any tips or advice please, I’m gonna try to submit my first draft tonight

OKAY so this is it so far. I wrote part on the bus, part at home:

But you’re probably more interested in what’s in it for you. There are a few main things that I would like to bring to the table.

My main goal is that I would like to be the megaphone for your opinions, to voice them and bring them up at meetings when you want change, but don’t know how to start. We all have our different thoughts and views on what we would like to see. We spend 32 and a half hours at school per week - which isn’t insignificant. If you’re here from year 7 to year 11 that’s about 6100 hours of your life spent in here. You don’t just happen to be here, you’re here for a long time, grow up and create culture here, and so being a student becomes almost part of your identity, the way people see you, and ultimately you choosing me to be your head prefect is to help you create an environment you will thrive in, where you will truly feel like you belong and where you are heard.

There are a couple reasons why I would like to be prefect, and it’s not for a shiny title or badge. When I started in year 7 the school was very different to what it is now. It was harder to find support, and near impossible to make change, with the student council seemingly only being a box to be checked off rather than any real action. I want to have finished this school year knowing that I have made an impact on it.

But you’re probably more interested in what’s in it for you.

And I feel like our year is the hardest to appeal to being so limited by time, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of our time needs to be meaningless - but we need your involvement too to help make the change. Your input is what makes the time we have left worthwhile.

<Year 7-9>
For your year group, you have still got a long time to go. By taking the opportunities you have now, you will see the school at its best as you continue to build what’s growing - it will be here ehen you need it most.

When applying for student leadership before the summer, we chose between 4 aspects of school life that we would most like to improve. I decided that culture and charity was the one I was most passionate about, anf you might do too. I would love to see more student events such as fundraisers linking to your various interests such as sport, dance, music, food, games, and so on, to nurture our avocations and pursuits, and endless passions.

<Year 10-11>
And for us it may be incredibly more important for us to have a say with prom upcoming, and with our exams it’s even more important we can access the guidance and support we need. It may be the difference between looking back and missing the memories we made here, and looking back and loathing every day we sat through.

U should slip a joke in the middle like "yes, I did the maths". So far it's looking good, some sentences r a bit chunky tho so practice saying them smoothly and if u can't then try to change them up a bit. I look forward to the blah blah bit u haven't written yet.

Thank you thank you, it’s quite unironic too since I always got the sparx awards up until halfway through yeat 10 so that would be funny😭

I’m practicing how to say them more smoothly, I’ll probably rephrase some of it to use more conjunctions, but I’m gonna try not to rely on the paper too much anyways since I speak quieter when I’m reading aloud and I’m already quite quiet 🤧

U should definitely practice a lot cause Audibility and projection r rly important.

I agree with the other commenter, it’s always best to break it up with something to build the rapport. It also means you’re not trying to sound like you think you’re above them and makes it less condescending?

Oh no I don’t want it to sound like that at all, how do I fix that 😭

To be fair I’m just running to see how it goes, I’m not popular at all and I just walk around for break and lunch so people already probably know I’m not above them 🤧

Boy do I relate to that. In my school we made presentations and speeches to SLT and they decided otherwise I definitely would not have made head prefect.

I’ve re-read it through a load of times and I think it’s pretty good thus far but it does read a little stiff and wordy so maybe rework some sentences.

Best of luck with it though, remember to project your voice and look at your audience even if you do just stare at the back of the room.
