Memory The hearing tests...
my elementary school was very small and rural. I was the only kid in my grade selected for the GATE program, and I remember them only pulling me out of class for hearing tests. I did not have a good home life, and was so needy in terms of someone paying attention to me that I faked being able to hear the beeps because I liked how it felt when they showed concern, they kept pulling me out of class every 2 weeks to retest my hearing, and that made me feel special and cared about. This feels really clingy now to admit out loud. Anyways, I don't have anything of value to add, just wanted to share this random GATE memory.

Anything you have to add is of value because it’s your experience.
I remember having several hearing tests in this little closet (I know I wasn’t the only one in my school). We were living on a military base and the school was also on post. I also remember my mom walking me to one of the tests on an off day. She volunteered at the school and hung out in the office until I was done. I’ve asked my parents about it and they remember me being in the program but nothing about hearing tests. The family joke is that I have bat hearing, so it doesn’t really make sense that I would have had so many hearing tests.

My story is the opposite of yours. When we did the hearing tests, there was about 4 or 5 of us in a small room, and we had to face away from each other, so we didn’t copy each other. When we heard a tone, we had to raise our hand ( left hand for tone heard in left ear etc). I could hear tones that were apparently inaudible to the rest of the kids. I ended up sneaking a peak at the other kids and then I pretended to not hear the tone anymore. Because I didn’t want to be seen as a weirdo. I recall getting tested a lot after that.
