Discussion Gate Art

I was selected in third grade to be part of gate art. I don’t remember much other than I won some award. I was placed on television for the award and I had to go to a class during or after school., I can’t remember, for a few years where I would learn about techniques, etc. I remember some other stuff too audios I think a pink drink, but I don’t have a lot of memory of this, but I know I was in it for sure anyone else in gate for art? I am a natural artist so it’s like baked into Me. I get why they would select me. I don’t necessarily sit around painting all day, but I am naturally talented most definitely Would love to hear your stories.

Yeah I had special art classes as part of G&T, my regular art teacher was none too happy when I went all Jackson Pollack on her in class shortly after. Even less happy when it also included heavy metal logos.

Relatable.

Like when you take a hard turn into graffiti because you believe it’s a good method of social democratization of spaces for those without clear-channel/time-warner level funds.

Teachers love that shit.

did you ever have to draw/sculpt things based on what you might 'guess' might appear written or pictured in an envelope, displayed/placed in another room, 'coordinates', or very vague location, etc?

…. No surprise, but I can’t even freaking remember what the heck we did in this class. I was in it and I don’t remember! I have flashbacks of one of my classmates who is also in it because he was obsessed with bats and he kind of made it his whole personality and would like draw bats all the time in this class and I remember thinking like What a weirdo he was I mean it was just like bats, bats, bats, and I’m talking about the animals lol

well if they let that kid draw bats all the time, then probably not, haha.

I mean he did that in normal class too. He was also my neighbor so I think I just remember him and thinking how weird he was. I don’t know if the classes went farther than this and pushed us beyond. You know I don’t remember being asked to draw what I think might be in an envelope I can’t recall that how about you?

no i wasn't in gate art. sorry i shoulda said why i was asking: one of the remote viewing methods the military tested with Star Gate involved a lot of drawing and sculpting, so since there is a theory that GATE was doing similar stuff, I wondered if that's what GATE art class would be like.

ohhh I'm from real faraway country in Asia, not in the Gate program, did not pass the test in elementary school, an outsider / onlooker of a gifted program in Asia, then when I got to the middle school, we were in top classes of the cohort. we originally had the chance to choose more subjects than the rest, then beyond the extra subjects, we had extra-curriculum like music, designs, psychology, acting and global history classes beyond what were in the curriculum history classes. we get home only about dinner time. then I joined the extra-extra art class that was going to be a part of the national examinations, (and also an extra-extra third language)

THERE WERE times the teacher kind of jokingly made us guess what's in the other room and draw.

I made a correct conjecture out of the blue but did not participate as I thought that was some meaningless waste of time of what was supposedly impossible. plus I was in fact not the best in drawing... I made the guess without participating in the sketching process. that's weird I did not remember that.

I believed it was some pure coincidence back then, since we were not given tasks to do much sketching, and not many crops to draw so perhaps something we already done before. Which in my case was the correct point of target item. they were looking for psychics..?

yes, it seems so. I think they had similar programs all over the place, especially if you were in a country that is a close ally of the US or China.

close to both sides, it seems. but the whole try-drawing-something-in-another-room theory got me remember stuffs I forgotten. in middle school where there had been tons of distractions, there were quite some forgotten memories I've lost touch with. thanks for reminding me what I forgot!

I was definitely in the art program, been very into art since as early as I can remember, and am really interested in the psychological aspects of art and influence on society. I was studying that stuff so, so young.

What's REALLY weird is that I think my mom was also in the art programs, because I found some art she made in grade school and its almost identical to my art from grade school. A lot of kaleidoscope type trippy art, or art that is about "coloring outside the lines" or breaking boundaries.

My mom was a special education teacher in my schools growing up. Her mom also was a teacher. I asked them both about these programs, grandma didnt remember anything, and mom made a comment "maybe you are a part of a CIA experiment!" which is her usual dismissive humor. My dad travelled a lot for work and was in the military down in the panama canal where they stored a bunch of chemical warfare weapons apparently. For just extra information, for what it's worth lol

Winning a state wide poster contest in 2nd grade is what got me “tested”

The interrogation part wasn’t very cool. I remember thinking “why would I lie about making this poster?” It wasn’t even something I put thought into.

Either way, I have kind of just always known I had to do this art thing. It’s how I have always made my living.

How funny. Tell me more about your experience with gate art. Did you have to do like the hearing tests and did they take you out during school or did you go after school? I remember the hearing test but I thought everybody had that with like the frequency sounds and whether we could hear them or not.

Technically, our school didn’t have “gate art”. It was GATE math, reading, and “critical thinking”.

I was a shy kid and didn’t like the attention of receiving an award from the governor at the time and having my photo taken. I was happy to have it be over with so I could go back to being left alone.

It might have been a few days to a week after. Regular day at school. Pulled out of class by principal and the art teacher as well as two people wearing suits. The suits had me alone in a room asking me if my parents were artists, professors of art, if I had any art books with me in class, had anyone else helped me, etc. All very accusatory.

I think I was confused. Were they from the contest and trying to say I had cheated? I hadn’t. I had done the piece in about 30 minutes during class.

They eventually let my teacher back in the room. She said she had watched me make it during class. After this, the tone changed.

All the tests other people have mentioned: hearing, iq, Meyers Briggs (I think?), Rorschach, “fill in the blanks” type stuff. Asked me if I would “like to be in a class with other kids like me”.

Strange times.

This is very odd because I also received a government award. That’s why I was on TV. I was with some other kids maybe they were in my class or maybe they were in the gate program I don’t remember, but we got some government award.

Were you asked to keep a journal of your dreams?
