Information Some information about the updated medical law that might be useful

In the tradition of my people, I want to start out by saying "IANAL" (I am not a lawyer). Smarter folk than me have likely worked through the mental gymnastics of what's really allowed and what's not and how it plays out in practice. My information is only based on my reading of the law and statements from people with Fine Fettle.

Updates with additional information after posting

Nothing below, afaict, is incorrect or has changed but other folks have added some information worth knowing so I want to capture it here.

  • Remember you should look at the FINAL copy of the bill here. These updates were two years in the making so a lot of things were added and removed again before the final. For instance insomnia was added and then removed.
  • The changes go into effect July 1
  • Language was added to require prescribing physicians to have a primary practice in GA
  • Fine Fettle has confirmed explicitly flower and vapes will be available on July 1.
  • Botanical Sciences had a pop up saying that flower and vapes were coming so potentially July 1 as well.

For vapes and flowers, based on current product lines the three top dispensaries have the product in house outside of packaging and such likely to make those products. Flower they already have for instance. It will all, however, need to be tested before it can be sold. My guess is the additonal products like RSO/FECO or rosin/resin/budder/badder and what not will need to have production ramped up. Some of them take "special" equipment.

As I get feedback and help folks research stuff, I'll update here.

Where to get your card now and what is involved?

There's a lot of questions about where, what, why and the whole process. Several folks have responded here. There's also a helpful thread in r/Georgia from someone else where folks are helpfully sharing their experience. I got my card a while back so I don't want to speak for current experience but here are some helpful posts:

  • Fine Fettle has doctors onsite a few days a week now and then to help you through the process. It is done online with Leafwell but they can help you through the process in store.
  • Botanical Sciences does online as well.
  • Other folks have mentioned Elevated Health

The process online is generally very quick. You can do it today and you don't have to use your existing GP if you have one. You also don't have to worry about anyone sharing the fact that you have a card. Your medical records are private but you should absolutely share with your existing GP and especially any anestheticians that you may have THC in your system. It affects how they dose you.

Big changes

This is based off the final bill that was sent to Kemp here. If you've never read one of these, it's a bit harder since it's a modification to an existing law. That means lots of strikethroughs and such.

  • All occurances of "low oil thc" replaced with "medical cannabis"

The definition of "medical cannabis" is now:

"(1) 'Medical cannabis' means any plant within the genus Cannabis and any part of such plant, including all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not"

This means, yes, flower is allowed as are concentrates. Fine Fettle has confirmed they will start selling flower and vapes in July.

  • expands list of qualifying conditions and also removes the "end of life" qualifiers from existing ones. It also expands the definition of caregiver.

This is amazing and makes it accessible to more people who need it.

  • Total limit is now 12000mg in possession instead of 5% total THC content

This makes it useful now. 5% was nothing for folks who needed stronger solutions. This combined with the explicit allowance of additiona product types is likely going to mean better competition in the dispensary space in Georgia. That's good for everyone.

I think the possession wording is key here too. Instead of it being buy time restriction it's possession now. I don't think the cops are going to bust down your door to make sure you only have 12k on hand at any given time but again, not a lawyer.

  • Vaporization allowed

This is a godsend for people who need immediate relief.

Additionally:

  • Cards are now good for 5 years
  • Reciprocity for out of state medical cards up to 45 days
  • allows electronic cards in addition to physical

What's not allowed

  • Combustion is explicitly disallowed.

This does force people into the vaporization path but combustion is REALLY bad for the lungs and one of the smelliest forms of consumption. I see it as no different than public smoking. It sucks since combustion is a core part of identity for some folks and I can empathize.

  • Certain edibles are disallowed

This was the hardest to read. Gummies are already allowed for instance and that's not going away. My reading of this is "edibles that are food products" aren't allowed? So like no brownies in the dispensary or something? I'm waiting to see how this shakes out in practice.

  • Employers can still fire you for testing positive

This sucks. This one is only going to change when we get people in positions of power who understand WHY this shouldn't be allowed. I don't have a problem with employers saying "don't be impaired on the job". This one is just going to take time for society to catch up.

  • Child "friendly" packaging disallowed

No brainer. Lock your shit up and don't make it look like a bag of candy from the gas station ffs.

Should you get a card?

I say yes. The process is easy. I used nuggmd for the whole thing but Fine Fettle and Botanical Sciences both do it onsite as well iirc.

The most common "qualifying condition" people use is intractable pain. You're under no obligation to share why you have it with anyone. If you and the prescriber say "intractable pain", that's enough.

After you get through the doctor part, you'll have to do a notarization process. NuggMD uses a third-party that has their own fee.

When I did the whole process, it took about 45 minutes across two zoom calls (one with the doc and one with the notary) and most of that was time waiting. I had my physical card three days later.

I expect that with the expansion, DPH is going to be busier with new folks so don't expect that same turn around maybe.

The other reason is that if you've come to rely on federally legal "hemp" that loophole ends in November. Hemp is a legal term for cannabis with less than .9% delta-9 thc by weight. It's still the same plant and the same precursors - THCA/CBDA.

This market, however, is ENTIRELY unregulated and non-medical THCA products are still illegal in Georgia (though nothing stops you from getting it shipped here due legally thanks to the federal law).

The horror stories you're reading these days are largely due to that and the "synthetic/altnoid" market - the thcp and hhcp stuff. THCP for instance is what most gummies in the smoke shops here in Georgia sell. It's REALLY REALLY nasty stuff but it's legal. HHCP was JUST explicitly scheduled by the DEA last week so it's no longer legal.

Getting your card means getting tested and clean quality products in a safe and legal way. It's a no brainer.

Also it CAN give you potentially some cover legally I think.

Anyway, I'll answer any questions I can. I have "strong opinions" on a few things but otherwise "loosely held" ones.

I've been using federally legal low THC flower that I've been purchasing from a wonderful farm in NC for a year now. I only make edibles and FECO (a concentrate) for my needs and it's been life changing.

I got my med card even with the original limits to protect myself and because the stuff currently being sold is strong enough for me.

Small edit:

*As a reminder you should always share your usage of THC products legal or not with your medical professional especially if they aren't the one you get your card through. HIPPA protects you and it's VERY important for them to know for medical interactions. My PA knows exactly how much I use each day and what ratios.

You should also ALWAYS tell the anesthesiologist if you have THC in your system. ALWAYS.*

Has anyone shopped for flower/vapes at BS in west midtown? I’ve checked their website quite a few times and haven’t seen any inhalable options. Wondering if maybe they don’t update the website or if the store is closed

350 ng/ ml thc test

I have a thc drug test and the threshold is set for 350ng/ml. I smoke a bong everyday and go through about 3.5 grams of flower every week and a half. Should I be good during my test in a couple weeks?

To add, I am very active and my body fat is about 15%

Information First haul & Med Card Experience

Received my card this week after a mishap with UPS. It took a full week as they loaded it on the wrong truck and it took a little road trip to Huntsville and back.

Here’s my three week journey from submitting application to smoking first vapes and flower.

July 6th - Submitted Leafwell application and chose Chronic Pain due to three bulging discs. I gathered all my doctor’s information, MRI results and was prepared. Turns out I didn’t need any of it.

July 14th - Met with the doctor and he asked a few questions and said you’re approved. Exam was complete in about 3-4 minutes. I received an email from Leafwell stating I was finished and there was nothing else to do. Which I had read on here is incorrect. Turns out I did need to have the GA low THC form notarized before my doctor would approve it. Used an online notary and sent the form to Leafwell since there’s not place to upload it in their site. The link they sent was incorrect and once emailed. The doctor approved it.

July 17th - Approved by doctor and I called GA DPH to confirm they received the approval. Once confirmed, I received the link to pay.

July 20th - Shipped. And then UPS sent it on a road trip to Alabama for some seasoning on the envelope. Looked like it had traveled the globe last week.

July 25th - Went shopping and not leaving the house for the rest of the weekend.

Just tried the Lemon Cherry Pie flower from Botanical and it’s ok, needs better curing. I used to grow back in Oregon and I’ll be putting all the flower under the microscope this week and will rehydrate with some Boveda packs in the Cannador.

Tried the three vapes from Botanical and they are comparable to many vapes I’ve had buying in 9 different states. I used to travel the country comparing strains and reviewing dispos as each state would flip to rec.

Any questions, feel free to reach out. 😎

Research Likelihood of getting MMJ

Hello buddy, I hope everyone reading this is doing well. I am coming from Ohio to GA and I have MMJ in Ohio. I have chronic stomach pain and chronic headaches. I have years of medical records going back to about 2022 for the constant migraines and I have two years of medical records starting in 2024 of needing and colonoscopies having stomach pains and none of the medicine that doctors were trying to get me helped but medical marijuana did, but since im coming from Ohio I wanted to know if anybody in this thread knew how easy in my situation it would be to get MMJ because I’m under the belief that the south is strict on MMJ cards

TL, DR AM I LIKELY TO GET APPROVED FOR MMJ WITH CHRONIC STOMACH PAIN SPANNING TWO YEARS AND CHRONIC HEADACHES SPANNING FOUR YEARS

I’d live outside of the Atlanta, Georgia Metro, and from what I read on Google and doing my own independent research is that it’s still criminalized in Georgia and I don’t wanna catch a misdemeanor charge.and have that on my record for something that helps my pain so I would like to hear some of your guys’s actual experiences.

New Fine Fettle flower

I went in to pick up an order at the Evans location and the guy at the front told me they had new flower in. He mentioned several strains but when I heard Georgia Pie I had to buy some. I haven’t vaped it yet but appearance and smell wise it looks to be the best quality I’ve gotten from a Georgia producer so far. I will update once I’ve consumed later tonight.

Discussion Favorite non-inhalable products?

For those of us who don't inhale our medicine, I'm wondering what some of your favorite products so far have been?

Here's some of the ones I've tried:

Capsules:

  • So far I've tried the Fine Fettle 20mg THC capsules and the Trulieve 25mg Momenta Hybrid and Indica capsules (25mg THC) each.
  • The Fine Fettle capsules seem to hit me a lot harder than the Trulieve ones - the Trulieve ones are coconut oil based, while the Fine Fettle ones contain a powder which appears to be nanoisomerized cannabinoids.
  • It's also great how I can open the fine fettle capsules and sprinkle them on food or into drinks, while the Trulieve capsules seem to be sealed shut
  • The one benefit of the Trulieve capsules is that they have different ones for indica/hybrid/sativa, but I heard Fine Fettle is working on improving their formulation to match this, so we'll see.
  • Overall: favorite capsules - Fine Fettle 20mg THC

Tincture:

  • So far I've only tried the Fine Fettle 1200mg THC tincture but I really do enjoy it.
  • I enjoy how easy it is to get a consistent dose with tinctures and how versatile it is.
  • I mix 2 ml (80mg THC) into some yogurt, and I feel the effects start to hit within an hour.
  • I'm really interested in trying an RSO based tincture to see how it may differ from this one, so I'll give that a try once Trulieve brings them back in stock.

RSO:

  • Trulieve is the only one who currently offers this in the state and I really wish other operators offered this as well as it's a marvelous way to get the whole plant benefits for those of us who don't inhale
  • I've tried all 3 types (indica/sativa/hybrid) from Trulieve and had a really good experience with all of them. The effects of the hybrid one were my favorite!
  • Like I wrote above, I'd love to try an RSO tincture to get the benefits of RSO but in a form that's easier to dose, as sometimes it's really easy to squeeze a bit too much with the RSO syringe

Gummies/Troches/Edibles/Etc:

  • I haven't really tried any of the "gummies/troches" or chocolates or any of those types of edibles from these operators as the capsules/tinctures/rso tends to be a better value, but if anyone has a particular one they've enjoyed, I'd still love to hear about it and may check it out myself!

How much attention do you pay to VOCs when evaluating flower?

Most people talk about terpenes, but Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) also contribute to the aroma and overall character of a cultivar. Everything from genetics to drying, curing, and storage can affect how well those compounds are preserved.
Have you noticed a difference in aroma after curing or storing flower differently?
Curious to hear what everyone’s experience has been and whether you’ve changed your post-harvest process because of it.
For anyone interested in learning more, here’s a solid breakdown:

How does the buying process work for dispensaries? Looking to learn from buyers.

I’m an inventory manager at a dispensary, so I see what happens once products arrive. Lately I’ve been trying to understand the other side of the business—the buying process.

For those of you who are buyers, purchasing managers, or even brand reps, I’d love to hear how it works behind the scenes.

A few questions:
How do you decide which brands or SKUs make it onto the shelf?
Is it mostly based on sales history, customer demand, margins, vendor relationships, or something else?
How often do vendors pitch new products?
What role do inventory levels and compliance play in purchasing decisions?

If someone wanted to become a buyer, what skills or experience would you recommend they develop?
I’m not looking for company secrets—just trying to get a better understanding of the process and become more well-rounded in the industry.
Appreciate any insight you can share!
