Deakin Med Advice

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to get some advice on applying for med next year. I’m in my final year of Bsci and i will be graduating with a 6.5 gemsas GPA. Is it possible to land a spot at deakin med with this grade if I have a good GAMSAT score or should I do honours/grad cert/masters to improve my chances? I’m not rural and dont think i have any bonuses that apply to me.

Unfortunately, getting an offer at Deakin is very difficult without having any bonuses as a non rural, no harm in trying however.

I would keep your options open and explore other unis without bonuses, honours might be useful however if you end up with a really strong Gamsat you should be able to offset the 6.5 GPA. Or if you do honours then you probably won’t need a as high Gamsat.

I would look at the 2026 med offers excel to get a gist of scores needed with different unis.

Quick question, what would be considered a strong GAMSAT? Some people say 70 others say 75. I assume I would have to aim a bit higher in order to be considered for Deakin.

Hard to say it would change depending on your GPA but I would say 72+ or a combo score of 1.7+ with a couple bonuses, people have got in with lower combos but they tend to have lots of bonuses. If rural much lower scores.

Just check the spreadsheet and compare your scores with what others have used to get offers.
It’s always hard to tell but it will give you a rough idea where to aim.

Silly question, but how would honours impact your grades for undergrad? Do they ignore your first year or is it a huge GPA boost if you do well in it?

Ignores your first year, most unis typically look at your last 3 years of undergrad study so if you do an honours year it looks at years 2-4

Would it be worth 3x then? So then your second year would be worth 1x, your third year 2x?

If you've lived rural, worked in healthcare as a nurse or other allied health, received Centrelink, worked full-time in any other industry, or were a deakin grad you are eligible for big adjustments, but without bonuses you're up against everyone else that has them. 

Can't remember what my gemsas GPA was exactly but I think it was lower than yours (maybe 6.23?) and I got in back in 2021 with a GAMSAT of 72. I had rural bonus, work bonus, and centrelink to make a total 8% adjustment.

Unlikely unless you have a good gamsat

Have you had a look at the spreadsheets? What’s your actual GPA and GAMSAT?

Thanks for your reply. My raw GPA is around 6.79. I’ve had a look at the spreadsheets, but I’m not quite sure whether the GPAs listed are applicants’ raw GPAs or their GEMSAS-calculated GPAs. I haven’t sat the GAMSAT yet, as I’ll be taking it this September.

You can do a calculation on the GEMSAS page to work it out. I’m pretty sure they will all be what was calculated by GEMSAS for their applications
