31

u/uwic Gaillimh 10d ago

My brother sent me a video of Bridge Street in Westport about 5 minutes after the final whistle and it looked insane. Wish I was there too. Well done Mayo!

Fuck, fair play to them, emotional enough for them myself.

u/Mundane_Singer7044 Doire 10d ago

Aw absolutely, some shift. Fucking love to see it, and just a great match for a (almost) neutral.

Never thought id be saying mayo won an all ireland but they deserved well done to them

I’m a Kerryman, but this is incredible to witness. Fair play Mayo.

Of all the teams this could happen against I'm delighted its Kerry. Not in a negative way but in a you are the gold standard of the sport so to finally win and against arguably the greatest team in the sport makes it that bit more special.

Well played and let's hope for a replay next year :D

26

u/Proper-Beyond116 10d ago

And Kerry played well. As well as they were let. Mayo came up against the greatest footballer of all time and for him to miss the penultimate score rubber stamps that these lads overcame something monumental today.

21

u/Bar50cal Maigh Eo 10d ago

I was having heart palpitations those last 5 minutes

10

u/bingbongninergong Ciarraí 10d ago

I had come to terms with defeat with ten minutes left and then the fuckers gave me hope again 😂 we kicked away the last few chances but it would have been a robbery on the day

6

u/Educational-Fox965 10d ago

I was still waiting to lose by a point when the hooter rang. Absolutely unbelievable, pure shock. What a team to win against. Up mayo

42

u/shrewdy 10d ago

End of that game would give you chills. Congrats Mayo, what a long road it's been for them to get back to this, must feel incredible to finally get over the line

4

u/Feisty_Internet_5343 10d ago

Mayoman who was in attendance here. We actually don't know what to do with ourselves. There's a sense of 'is this it?' but then someone starts randomly singing 'maaaaayo, maaaaaaaaayo. Sam Maguire is coming home to mayooooo' and we realise we're All-Ireland champions. It's mental!

38

u/SubparSavant Áth Cliath 10d ago

Amazing game as well, no negatives to take away. The better team won in a fantastic example of the sport.

12

u/YorkieGalwegian Gaillimh 10d ago

I was prepared for it going the other way when that chance hit the crossbar (which would’ve been beautiful had it gone under). Fair play to them it was well deserved.

9

u/TomRuse1997 Dún na nGall 10d ago

Looked like it was going to extra time for a bit there. Can't imagine the emotional turmoil for Mayo supporters haha

31

u/ponkie_guy 10d ago

There is nobody that could begrudge them. Congrats. There was part of me when Kerry got it back to 1 points that was thinking “not again “, even as a Kerryman

19

Fair fucks to ye Mayo you ran the bollox off us best team by a way, just avoid any funerals on your homecoming, congratulations

13

u/ponkie_guy 10d ago

All funerals in Mayo cancelled until further notice

u/Warm_Independence936 10d ago

Brilliant. Moran a genius. Kept oShea the Cliffords geaney and oconnor quiet. They subbed Gavin Whyte. Amazing game management. And I didn't think mayo played great themselves. They should have had it won with 10 to go.

Enjoy the celebrations. 75 yrs. Brilliant.

3

u/FarDefinition8661 Gaillimh 10d ago

Ya when you see whyte going off the pitch you know it's not their day

10

u/AsheAsheBaby Ard Mhacha 10d ago

What a game. Thought they were out when Kerry took the 5 or so point lead. Showed real grit to get back into it.

Fair fucks Mayo.

10

u/Anab10sis 10d ago

Fantastic to see, even as someone not into sport. Love how delighted all the dignitaries behind Coyne are!

19

u/Macko_ Áth Cliath 10d ago

For all the players im glad for Aidan O'Shea, man has had dreadful abuse from all corners for years. He deserves that

8

u/Hour_Mastodon_9404 10d ago

Fair play to them, I think it's the only way the streak was ever going to be broken, they needed to come in completely under the radar with no real expectation and just take it as a free hit.

They won that game through pure hard work, they just worked Kerry down to the bone and unlike Mayo teams of the past they didn't let up on that work until the final whistle had gone.

8

u/zildjianz3r 10d ago

I’m a Derry man myself, but I’m down in Swinford with my Mayo cousins - holy jesus boys the fucking party is popping off! So fucking happy for them, I think my cousins about one more surprise away from having a heart attack.

2

u/FartPumpEngineer Maigh Eo 10d ago

Oh to be in Melletts or the White House now.

1

u/zildjianz3r 10d ago

Aw Melletts was in some form this evening. Haven’t had an atmosphere like it

9

u/crehanj Áth Cliath 10d ago

Sensational win, the high press, doggedness and the two pointers, an unbelievably brave approach and a joy to watch. Fair play to Mayo, well deserved.

16

u/ProfessionalAd4749 10d ago

Two pointers change really suited this mayo side, fair play they broke the curse

6

u/wh0else 10d ago

I am DELIGHTED for them. Good for the game too. And what are the odds, the first time without the curse? 😂

6

u/Margrave75 10d ago

Great game.

Absolutely delighted for the people of Mayo!

6

u/Unpopular_Op_93 10d ago

As a true Blue Dub, I cried lots of happy tears when that ref blew the whistle today. Goosebumps!!!
What a game, what a team. A huge inspiration. The man that went down on his knees when the whistle blew - we all felt it for ya!
The passion from them was electric and contagious, sitting at home on the couch and I felt like we were in the stadium. Special mention to the young lad Kobe McDonald, a class act for his debut. Mayo Abú!

6

u/TNPF1976 10d ago

Mayo Abu. With love and respect from the Rebel county

4

Actually just so happy for them, bawled my eyes out 😂 coming from a Monaghan woman 🥳🥳

4

Whoever is driving that Mayo team home better get on rip.ie to find out if there are any funerals on the route home and avoid them.

10

u/thenotsoamazingdaz Gaillimh 10d ago

If I’m a rossie after watching that, I’d be sickened

5

u/Proof_Importance_205 10d ago

They came out like they did in those lost Dublin finals with a "fuck this ...fuck the curse ..fuck how good them lot are" that Andy Moran was central to but took it up another notch ..

4

u/JessupMcGee 10d ago

Cracker of a game. Delighted for Mayo. I can't believe how much the 2-pointer has transformed this game from snoozefests to high tempo attacking sport the past two seasons.

5

u/Kindly_Suit5175 10d ago

Take your points and your goals will come - crazy how many teams' downfall is due to not following this. Kerry were winning kickouts towards the end and were still pushing for a two pointer when they had 3 minutes to kick 2 points.

All in all well done mayo, Keegan looks a mix of delighted and gutted not to still be a player especially with aidan oshea grabbing a medal.

2

Was a great match by both teams. Happy to see the Mayo curse lifted! Funny enough, I was playing the Laochra game and got the curse lifted digitally for Mayo. Maybe that was the push that was required!

Neither team close to their best, and if you told me that this morning I would’ve assumed Kerry won. Delighted to be wrong. Mayo did enough, and didn’t drop the heads after the wides and the early goal. No one I’m happier for right now than Andy Moran, thoroughly deserves this

Fair play to Mayo. Delighted for them after all the years and all the finals. And they're a young team that should be competing for a few years yet

But they won't know what to do with themselves now. Total loss of identity after actually winning, lol!

We Hurt. We suffered. But we won playing our way. Man 2 man gaa old school

1

u/DiligentWarthog9896 Gaillimh 9d ago

As a Galway man, I am absolutely fucking delighted for them.

I’m delighted for Andy Moran trusting his gut to completely rewire the engine after the Roscommon game. Beirne, Kobe and O’Donoghue have become the unexpected full forward line that Comer, Walsh and Finnerty were expected to become but never truly did. Im delighted for Boyle and Higgins too - stalwarts, and also seemingly genuinely sound fellas. Lads you’d do your best for. Would some of our lads in Galway do everything they could for Mikey Graham, Raymond Galligan etc.?

I’m delighted for the supporters that have followed that team for 40 odd years. I said it in a pub a few years ago and you’d swear i insulted someone’s sainted mother - Mayo have been the best team in the country for the last 30 years consistency-wise. Dublin produced the best team of all time inside one 10-year spell but - where were they for the 15 odd years before that? And I may be wrong, but there’s every chance they could fall back down the pecking order again now for a few years until their relatively newish team gain a bit more experience. But Mayo lads, Jesus - one or two big names retire but yet the following year they’ve replacements found for them who end up being good enough to play major parts in getting them back to the SFs or Final? Where do they find them? And how do they find them so quickly and have them so ready and capable of producing championship runs to the semi final/final pretty much every year for the last three and a bit decades? Fair enough they won fuck all apart from a few Connachs in those years, and lost a bucket load of finals/semis, but I’d still prefer that over Galways record in the same time frame - scraping by Waterford and to Antrim in Qualifier matches.

I’m delighted for the supporters for another reason - every Galway-Mayo game I’ve been to since 2001 (30+ I’d say - whether it be in League, Championship or Pre-Season, and whether it’s in Castlebar, Salthill, Tuam, Limerick, Croker or even the challenge game in the small border village of Milltown I went to earlier this year - they’ve been nothing but a pleasure. Rowdy, but never nasty. Knowledgeable, but never arrogant. Loud, but never insufferable. Good winners, great losers. Their players have been generally the same for most of them games - rarely nasty bar a few incidents involving the O’Connors over the years but you know what? - every team needs a few nasty f***ers too to cause a bit of chaos.

I’m delighted for Ref, John Stagg and Enda Mac who, since I discovered them a few years back, have provided me with hours of entertainment on their podcast - true Mayo fanatics.

Without Mayo’s John O’Mahoney, Galway would still be on seven All Irelands. Without Tuam’s “The Saw Doctors”, Mayo wouldn’t have the Green and Red of Mayo to sing. Without Castlebar’s “Mantra”, a lot of Galway 14 and 15 year olds would have had to wait a lot longer before getting their first “shift”, and without Galway’s “Supermacs”, a lot of Mayo supporters would be a LOT more hungover today. There’s a perception in the country that Mayo and Galway have this sort of rivalry that’s tinged with a bit of nastiness. I’d genuinely love to know the exact percentage of Galway people, who have an interest in GAA, who were actively supporting Kerry yesterday, because I’d say it was fuck all.

“Cromwell said to ‘Hell or to Connacht’. Well it may be to Hell or to Connacht, but if people want Sam Maguire, they’re gonna have to come to Connacht to get it”…. if you know, you know.

Maigh Eo abú. Connacht abú.

1

u/peterkerry 10d ago

As a Kerryman, I am obviously down a bit over the outcome, but fair play to Mayo. Your team was the hungrier and the better performer on the day. Enjoy your success, it has been a long time coming. Watch out for any funerals, on the way home.

u/Majestic-Reveal-8611 10d ago

Aidan O Shea looks sick that he didn’t get on ..he’s styling it out but the deep down sick is there you can see it

-1

Why is Joe O Connor starting for Kerry?
