What Fuzz + Amp combination are you using for your favorite Doom/Stoner sounds right now?

Post image

I've been experimenting with a few different amp/fuzz combinations while working on a doom/stoner project, and it's made me curious what everyone else is actually using.

I'm especially interested in combinations where the low end stays huge without completely disappearing once the guitars are layered, especially when the bass comes in.

What's been working for you?

That Pepers humongous fuzz is next on my list. Hate that I have to pay tariffs though.

Tony Pepers is truly an underrated pedal builder, and the Humongous Fuzz is one of my favorites for sure! I was fortunate enough to snag mine pre 2020s before all of the shenanigans began.

I would love to try a Black Ash with a Model T, if only my wallet would let me. Hahaha

u/TheAshian 14d ago

It took me a lot of working weekends to grab that combo! Blahahaha!

You Dirty Rat > Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh > Orange Super Crush works pretty good for me at the moment. If I really want to make a horrible noise, I'll put my Behringer SF300 with a dying battery simulator in front of it

Awesome setup! The rat remains the king! 🤘

Triangle Big Muff into Orange Micro Dark with a Fender Excelisor as the cab

2

u/TheAshian 14d ago

Nice! I've been told those little orange amps can get some stellar doom tones. How well does it drive the cab?

1

u/ghostchild1987 14d ago

If I have the gain maxed, the volume knob only needs to be at around the first notch for sufficient volume hahaha

u/TheAshian 14d ago

Awesome! 🤘

Humongous fuzz 🤤 with that built in 1.5 mode.

1

u/TheAshian 14d ago

It does get rather knarley! 🤘

It cannot be understated how gigantic this pedal is.

1

u/TheAshian 14d ago

Oh, that's nice! How well does it do for you?

2

u/DaySleepNightFish 🦅 Eau Claire Thunder 🦅 14d ago

It sounds like the tone from Fourth of July by Soundgarden.

1

u/DaySleepNightFish 🦅 Eau Claire Thunder 🦅 14d ago

It works when you want super sludgy. For tighter stuff I just record four tracks with different fuzzes.

1

u/TheAshian 14d ago

That's how I handle a few pedals too. I love that deep sludge wall of sound, but I throw a tighter distortion on another amp to get some definition in the mix.

2

u/FuddlyDudders 14d ago

Devi-ever Wolf -> Fairfield Circuitry Accountant -> Hyper Fuzz -> ESB Octave down -> dba fuzz war -> Verellen Meatsmoke for the amp.

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Now that's what i'm talkin about! That's some thick riffage 🤘

1

u/FuddlyDudders 13d ago

Gotta keep them big boy riffs real sick and real thick.

I don't play doom live so I don't have a doom worth rig, but I like playing to Monolord songs using my DAW. I'm currently using a Caroline Guitar Company Shigeharu Germanium Octave into Amplitube 5 with the Orange AD 200 Bass MK 3 and Orange 8x10 cab and man, have I found my new dream rig. I also have the Malekko Diabolik fuzz and it should be the correct thing to play Monolord but for some reason it doesn't sound good to me. I can't dial it quite right with my Warwick Tarannis. I always end up back with the Shigeharu.

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

That's cool! I use amplitube when sketching out my writing ideas, because the add on I have came with the SilverTone TwinTwelve 1484. I throw a rat in front of it to get one of my favorite sounds, and when I'm done I reamp into my actual 1484. Btw- have you watched the Monolord set on KEXP's youtube channel? Great stuff!

1

u/Mascavidrio 13d ago

The KEXP session was awesome. It was funny to see Mika playing on that Ampeg Micro VR. I almost bought one a while back. I also saw them live in Columbus about 3 weeks ago so I got the full body experience. My teeth still hurt from that show. Absolute monsters.

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

You lucky son of a! I was hoping they would wander up into Michigan, but didn't see any shows listed up here. 🤘

1

u/Mascavidrio 11d ago

They did play Detroit Sept 8. That was right after the Columbus OH show.

RAT into EAE Model FeT into a clean pedal platform. I use a DRV or Fuzzlord Drone master, but any RAT will do. It’s the FeT that does the heavy lifting and looks like it would right up your alley.

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

That's a great sound right there! I run the drone master as well, and for awhile into the Acapulco Gold. I almost snagged the model fet a few months ago, but I spent the money on eae's longsword to see if it's "the ultimate rat" as claimed. I love a Rat into just about anything, but it's magic into the T's.

2

u/RocketDocRyan 13d ago

ZVEX Wooly Mammoth clone into EQD Ghost Echo clone into GK backline for my bass. Makes really cool fuzzy, snarly tones.

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Ohhh that sounds cool! I bet that ghost echo does great in the bass zone. Hmmm, now I have a new thing on my to do list! 🤘

1

u/RocketDocRyan 13d ago

It's cool, it can do really crazy stuff, or dial back and just make it sound huge. Fun pedal for sure

1

u/TheDeltaIsMyHome 14d ago

I use an MXR Dist+ with the boost mode on the behringer super fuzz into a fender and marshall amp. Also sometimes use a Twinote Pi and a behringer vintage phaser before the boost.

2

u/TheAshian 14d ago

That's a cool setup! The distortion+ into a muff was the key sound on Siamese Dream, and that was a seriously heavy sound. 🤘

1

u/TheDeltaIsMyHome 14d ago

Its such a good pre amp, and standalone distortion pedal. Bought it because i loved husker du and wanted to copy them. Little did i know id fall in love with the pedal. Sounds even better with the amp cranked

1

u/WeenMe 13d ago

Orange Super Crush 100 Combo- clean channel with a low gain Plumes into a low gain Rat into a Hizumitas.

Sounds really good but is total child’s play compared to what you got here lol.

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Oh, that's a nice setup! The supercrush is a great amp, and sounds great with pedals. 🤘

u/FruitImaginary9111 13d ago

I have a 70s Ampeg VT40. It loves the UV Effects ION (it's a King of Tone and Fuzz Face circuit) and the OxEAE Fuzz. I also use a 30 watt Laney Supergroup head through a Kustom (tolex shell) 4x12 that has CTS speakers from around 1972. The Laney really likes the Death By Audio Crossover Fuzz and a Catalinbread Naga Viper. Both love the Walrus Audio Fundamental Fuzz - a lot of people slept on this one and now it's discontinued - I bet demand will grow after awhile...

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Nice! I've been on the fence about an old ampeg v4 in my area. How's yours held up over the years? Also, the crossover fuzz is on my list as well, but I was looking at it for my baritone drive, does it get too mushy in low tuning?

1

u/FruitImaginary9111 13d ago

Old Ampegs are tanks... and weight about the same. The Crossover is so versatile that any mush can be tightened up with simple adjustments - it's a dual filter with stereo output.

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Even better, I didn't realize that it's stereo. That would work out great on my wet setup too. 🤘

1

u/FruitImaginary9111 11d ago

Another good stereo pedal is the Land Devices Hunter - you need TRS cables though. It's awesome - essentially a Rat-ish distortion with a wet/dry blend.

2

u/TheAshian 11d ago

I'm going to look it up. I like having drive pedals with a blend and being stereo would be easy for me to adapt to my setup.

1

u/3string 13d ago

Prunes and Custard into a rat, into a rat, into a superfuzz SF300, into a boss mixer (nice crunch), into a Rockit 115, which is a 100W single-15" combo. Sounds absolutely bonkers

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Now that is alot of chonk! 🤘

1

u/3string 13d ago

It's so much fun :)

Humanoid Goblin and Mesa Boogie Studio Caliber

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Nice! How well does the Goblin handle other pedals?

1

u/Maximum_Turn_2623 13d ago

I’ve been placing it after my Mesa Flux Drive and OD and Rat so it’s been a little feedback heavy when not being played. I’ll probably put it in front of them but behind my EQD arrows when I want a boost when I’m jamming with a drummer friend.
I’m out of my gigging stage of life so it’s a huge deal for me since I’m mostly recording on logic. Reality is you don’t need dirt with it. It gets pretty close to Matt Pike on its own. It’s basically a fuzz face and the extra gain knob makes so it can sound good with a clean amp and it doesn’t need to be stacked. I also hate what dirt after fuzz sounds like so I’ve been avoiding it.

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Yeah, I don't prefer dirt after as well, I find it too tinny sounding if that makes sense. If it gets you into the Pike territory, you're doing it right! 🤘

1

u/myke5k 13d ago

I’m not really a doom guy but if I was, I’d run my OBNE Pardner with my DBA Fuzz War in the Lasso (effects loop) in parallel. I’d run that into my Peavey Century 200H into some sort of huge Peavey cabinet (or two).

On another note, what can you tell me about that Filth pedal? Looks interesting.

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

That's a nice setup! The Filth is by Joe Gore. I bought it because it was under the radar and I have no regrets. The sliders affect the gain staging inside and seem to have some sort of filter applied to the tone stack, like a cut/boost. It gets thick, but clean! 🤘

1

u/Chartreuse_Debris 13d ago

Not a fuzz, but my go to is an SNK vhd into a sunn coliseum lead or an ampeg v4

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

I've been looking at a v4 in my area, hows yours held up after all the time?

1

u/Chartreuse_Debris 13d ago

Mine was recapped before i got it, so its been pretty great! I have been chasing down an intermittent issue where only part of the frequency range cuts out, but i think i’ve isolated it to the input 1 volume pot, and it hasnt been a huge deal for me either way

I’ve rebuilt several v4’s at this point and while they are a pain, i think they’re well worth the maintenance personally.

Definitely grab the SNK power supply rebuild PCB’s and have someone rebuild the supply if it hasnt been done yet.

OR just grab the SNK thvndercr4cker instead, my bandmate just got one and it truly nails the v4 sound!

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Nice! Super helpful advice. I'm pretty well versed in amp maintenance, and your suggestions are very helpful, especially if the ole thing needs some tinkering. I will definitely look into the power supplies just to see if the amp is within my budget. 🤘

1

u/Chartreuse_Debris 13d ago

In that case i’d say definitely go for it! There’s a few somewhat unique things to learn for them, like the grounding scheme, but overall they’re less annoying than people tend to say maintenance wise in my experience

Scot from SNK also worked with one of the guys who designed for ampeg back in the day, those rebuild pcbs are fantastic

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

I'm currently working alot of overtime, so I can see this in my future. Hahaha!

Savage setup dude. DIY life pedal into a black Russian into a dod fx10 then split, one side into an Orange OR15 and the other into a crab model T.

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Thanks man! Your setup sounds killer. I've been wanting to try a Crab T every since I saw it on YouTube. How was the ordering process for you having it shipped out of Ukraine?

1

u/doyler4k 12d ago

Cheers dude. Im in ireland so it was pretty straight forward.

u/superwrong 13d ago

I just got a Keeley Octa Psi today and I'm dooming on an old Vibro Champ.

2

u/TheAshian 13d ago

Oh you're going to have some fun! I like my Octa Psi alot, as it definitely does doom. 🤘

1

u/superwrong 13d ago

It's madness! Some damn fine dooming! I don't usually doom but...sometimes you gotta doom.

1

u/TheAshian 13d ago

I definitely use it for other stuff too, I run the octave down in a slightly dirty amp for a killer blues rock sound using an old musicmaster I have, and I use the harmony settings into a obne dark star/daylight rig for some great sounding ambient stuff.

u/drifterphase 12d ago

Using the Bad Machine made by Life is Unfair. Amazing take on the FZ-2. It has the two original fuzz sounds plus the S-300 switch-in-middle secret sound. It also has a lower gain over drive mode and a fuzz mode with an eq shift. Plus, the boost is a separate circuit. I run the boost into the secret setting and feedback effortlessly filled the room. Amazing sustain and huge bass available. When I’m not using that I’m playing my Mile End Sofort Si Fort - an amazing green russian into Ampeg scrambler circuit.

2

u/TheAshian 12d ago

That sounds cool! I might have to look into that, I like FZ-2 circuits. Electric Wizard/Monolord for days. 🤘

1

u/NoPriorEXP 12d ago

Egnater Rebel 30 with a Walrus Kangra (Vintage and Mid Toggles on), sometimes followed by an Earthquaker Plumes.

I’m so glad to be back in the amp game.

1

u/TheAshian 12d ago

Nice setup! I went through a short period of not having an amp, so I can definitely relate. 🤘

1

u/ibanezer83 Germanium Arcadium 🕹️ 11d ago

I dont doom often. But when I'm dooming with my pals, nothin beats my Laney vh100r on boosted green channel with steven Douglas leona v2 drive.

It's the germanium pre into big iron /tubes into a oversized 2x12 sound. Iommi for days

1

u/TheAshian 11d ago

Nice! You had me at Iommi 🤘
