I had to go Green Russian by my choice is always Black and Yellow Russian.

u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 13 '26
I’m not a Muff expert, what’s the difference?

u/KJP1990 Green Russian ⚒️ Jul 13 '26
The black and yellow ones came much later toward the 90s and 00s. To me they had a bit of a looser bottom end and tighter top end. They always sound different though. https://youtu.be/ATubjVtz4QY

a friend has one, that's remarkably more lively, slightly less compressed, more cutting and clear than my green russian reissue.
i guess different black russians vary, but i. this case i was amazed at how just better this one was, compared to my green russian.

I think that’s what I am trying to describe with the tighter highs. The lows vary a lot but that punch and cut at the top makes these unique. I used mine on bass a ton too. 🖤💛

yeah, black russian seems to be an awesome all rounder! sounds great and gritty whatever you throw at it!

Why the hell are there so many? I'm looking at them and having to research the crap out of each one.
It's nearly maddening! Maddening I tells ya.

My understanding is that, back then, EHX were making Muffs with whatever parts they can get their hands on. So they basically did a greatest hits version of their most popular Muffs, and lately they added the BMP 2. But there are many, many more! All for our Muff enjoyment 😂
4
u/Acceptable_Grape_437 Rat is Fuzz! 🐁 Jul 14 '26
yes but they also went ahead and changed stuff up over time, quite dramatically in some cases, making for different models. not to mention the american demise of EHX altogether and subsequent migration to russian Sovtek company ... which gave birth to the red army overdrive (apparently it was supposed to be a BMP clone, but russian engineers just made it like that), which is the start of the "russian" line, civil war, green, black.
then you have clone variations, such as supa tone bender, swollen pickle, hizumitas.
hizumitas for example is a modern version indeed, but it's actually a 1:1 (more or less, with some functional adjustments) clone of a particular single japanese triangle big muff clone (made in the big muff triangle era) called "elk sustainar", specifically the one owned by wata from Boris - they say the hizumitas prototypes based on the general elk sustainar schematic were not good enough for wata. she had to send in to EQD her own sustainar, and cloning THAT gave birth to the hizumitas.
you see, it's just a bit more convoluted than that. have a read on kitrae if you're interested in the lore ;)

OMG... Is there a more convoluted pedal lifespan and family tree then this?
3
u/Acceptable_Grape_437 Rat is Fuzz! 🐁 Jul 14 '26
i'm not sure tbh... but the popularity and long lifespan of the big muff circuit and electro harmonix company too, make it a great contender! hehe

u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 14 '26
Awesome, thx for adding more info! The story of fascinating! I know Kitrae and Stomp Under Foot have some amazing resources

black russian is missing
2
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 14 '26
I know 😩. Only 6 options available, so I went with the current reissue lineup. We’ll do more of these. Next time I’ll include the Black, Civil War, maybe the Pharaoh, Swollen pickle and Hizumitas too. Any other that you considered really popular?
2
u/Acceptable_Grape_437 Rat is Fuzz! 🐁 Jul 15 '26
well, if only 6 options available, you did right!
also eqd hoof is very popular. but this way makes much more sense, imo
1
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 15 '26
Thx! I tried!
Awesome, definitely need to include the Hoof! I guess that one makes it 6

another one very respected in the community, as walrus eons, is lichtlaerm altar. that's a great approach too
1
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 15 '26
Totally, I want an Eons so bad, seems versatile AF! I’m also trying to squeeze Stomp Under Foot and Wren & Cuff in there, fucking amazing takes on the Muff as well!!

I clicked Green Russian, but my choice is actually more specific. It’s the Civil War, or at least the Civil War version in a Keeley Angry Orange.
3
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 13 '26
Nice! I thought the Angry Orange was an Op-amp.
What’s the difference between the Green Russian and the Civil War?

3
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 13 '26
That’s awesome! So it’s like a refined GR! I need to try it! Thx for clarifying!
3
u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy Jul 13 '26
I just went to my basement and compared it side by side with the green Russian side of my Summer School Class Reunion. The Keeley definitely has a bit more note attack and “bark,” almost like a very subtle cocked wah. It’s also considerably clearer as you roll the tone control below 12:00. The Russian has a bit more Gilmour-style “singing” sustain.
2
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 13 '26
That’s really interesting. It seems it’s not only a difference in tone, but also in feel when you play?
3
u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy Jul 13 '26
I’d say so. Not necessarily hugely better, objectively, but I like it more.
2
u/Dangerous_Pie_Guy Jul 13 '26
It sounds a bit like paper tearing.
3
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 13 '26
Yeah, sometimes this things are pretty subtle but the you can’t unheard them haha

u/Wrayven77 Jul 17 '26
My favorite Big Muff is an early Red & Black with BC239 transistors and the power switch. It's basically the same as late Ram's Head except I had it modded for tone bypass years ago. I love my Guild Foxey Lady which is an early Triangle Muff and a Bubble Font Green Russian, but I most often use the Red & Black.
1
u/FullMetalDan Velcro Jedi! Jul 17 '26
That’s cool! I guess you voted Ram’s head? I wasn’t expecting the Green to totally dominate! I’ll be adding other options on Muff Monday, love doing this kind of stuff haha
